Microphone does not work in-game but my mic is not the problem.
So one day my mic stopped working in-game and I had no idea. Like my friend noticed I was trying to talk to a friend in-game but he said he couldn't hear me. So i tested the mic in game in the options menu and it worked and everything.

Whenever I press the mic key, it shows on my screen that I'm talking in game but on everyone else's screen's the indicator that would normally show to tell them, doesn't show and they don't hear me.

I know this because I also have a friend at my house using a spare laptop. So I decided, I'll restart my computer. No dice. So I closed Skype, Discord, and any programs that use the mic and restarted steam. I went in game, they still couldn't hear me. I even tried disabling all other mics in the recording devices in the sound option on windows and disabled exclusive control. nothing.

The stupid thing is, I hear them just fine but they can't. Normally I would be okay with just skype (which works fine during the issue), but some of my friends don't have skype and also mics so it's easier to communicate with them in game with a mic.

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help. Thank you for your time ^-^

If you go into your options menu and then into the voice tab, there should be a dropdown box that allows you to choose your mic. Seeing as to how it works with everything but Garry's Mod, I'm thinking it just hasn't automatically setup your mic like it normally would.

Unfortunately there's no dropdown box for me. It just shows
Enable voice
Voice transmit and recieve volume sliders
test microphone
and
boost microphone gain.

If you try using your mic, does anything happen in the test microphone box? If not, try boosting your mic gain.

Testing it works fine, I can hear myself clearly. it's like I'm blocked or glitched from sending my voice. it's not that nobody can hear it, it's not even sending it to everyone.

Assuming that your transmit slider is maxed out, is this happening with just one server or multiple servers?

anywhere I go. the sliders are maxed. weird thing is, if I mute the transmit volume it also mutes my transmit volume to skype.

Hm. First off, if you mute the transmit volume, go into your recording devices and see if it's muted there. That shouldn't be happening. If that doesn't work, let's try debug mode. Just follow the below steps:

  1. Go into your game properties and click on advanced options.
  2. Put in -condebug -profile as the options.
  3. Join a server that you know it doesn't work on and try speaking. If it works, you're good to go! If it fails again, close out your game and continue these steps.
  4. Look in your Steam folder (usually C:\Program Files\Steam on Windows).
  5. Navigate to your Garry's Mod folder (C:\[path to Steam folder]\steamapps\common\GarrysMod).
  6. We're going to need two files from your Garry's Mod folder. One of those is the timestamped.log file at the root of the Garry's Mod folder.
  7. Go ahead and copy the contents of that into a comment, tagging it as code (see formatting help at the bottom of the comment text box). If Windows says it's an unrecognized file type, go to that popup window and click on the option that says something to the effect of "Open this file by choosing from a list of installed programs" (I've got no idea what it says, I haven't used Windows in quite some time)
  8. We also need the console log, which can be found by clicking on the garrysmod folder. In there, you'll find a file called console.log.
  9. Go ahead and copy that into the same comment, following the same steps you did with timestamped.log.

Ah, no problem! I personally don't see any reason why that should've worked, but I'll go with it.

Welp... it broke again. My game crashed because my friends did a bit too much, now the mic doesn't work again...

I also can't fit the logs because they're too big...

Okay, go ahead and add me and we'll go from there. I'll just have to update this thread with the solution when it's found.

For those of you wondering, his issue was with Half-Life 2. It's a bug with Garry's Mod that happens when it tries to import content from other Source games (HL2, TF2, CS:S, etc.). Disable your Source games one-by-one to see which one is causing the issue. If that doesn't work, just nuke it and disable all of them.

I also seem to have another issue. My backspace and tilde key no longer work for gmod. they sometimes work for the first few minutes of being in game, then they stop entirely, except the tilde key which seems to only work if I press escape first.

The only work around I see currently, is highlighting text that you messed up and continue typing...
