PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT REGUARDING STEAM PRACTICES
I just would like to start by saying I was recently hacked and had 800+ RUST skins stolen from me. All of which was no fault of mine. No sketchy gambling websites, no trade scams no nothing. I also had all current forms of steam security in place. My account was accessed 2 separate times in 2 days from 2 separate accounts OUTSIDE of the USA without ANY notice to me at all. And this is what steam has been saying.

I understand that it's upsetting to hear that we can't restore your items. I also know that your items are valuable to you but Steam Support does not restore scammed, lost, or stolen items for any reason.

If you haven’t yet, please take a look at our security recommendations article, which outlines ways you can protect your account and what to watch out for.

As previously stated, if the items were Trade Protected, you may evaluate and begin the process of reversing eligible trades through your Trade History page.

On the other hand, I've reviewed the account's security history and it looks like the hijacker accessed your account on July 18 (PST).

They knew your account name and password. In most cases, hijackers get this information through phishing sites. These sites look legitimate and are often tied with trading or tournaments but are intended to steal your login details - sometimes the malicious sites can even look like the Steam.

On the same day, they transferred the authenticator to their own device - doing this required an SMS code sent to your phone number at 17:50:46 (PST). I can see on our end that you were alerted for it. Transferring the authenticator reduces the trading restrictions to 2-days (rather than the normal 15-days). Since the hijacker had full access to your account and the authenticator, they were able to submit the trade and confirm it using the mobile app that they transferred the authenticator to.

Since it's unlikely they had direct physical access to your mobile device, this means the code was somehow provided or even intercepted.

Thus, while on your end it appeared as if there was no confirmation required; this was actually due to the hijacker having full control over the account, and being able to approve said activity from their end (in which you wouldn't see).

Again, I'm sorry we are not able to restore your items.

Basically get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and they will do nothing for the loss of ly thousands of dollars. BE WARNED THAT EVEN IF YOU DO EVERYTHING RIGHT STEAM WILL DO NOTHING FOR YOU WHEN THERE SYSTEMS FAIL!!!!

There is no bypass for 2fa so someone can only get that code one of two ways. Have access to your phone or by getting it from you.

Valve's policy on item restoration is clearly outlined for everyone to read.

Valve use to restore items until the community abused it. It's far too easy to fake account hijackings.
Imagine all these people buying coins, bitcoins and all other digital artifacts.

A few clicks. Poof. All their valuables are gone forever and they will never get it back. Scary.
its your own fault for wasting money and time on skins in the first place

I am aware jackass thanks for that. Their practices and policies are from 2015 and 2016 so they could clearly be updated for today's modern technology. And honestly if I didnt have their 2 factor authenticator activated I would have had 15days to cancel the trade instead of 2 when I wasn't even aware of it taking place untill it was finished, and that's when I got the notification. Thats what the announcement was for not that they told me to get boned and im beat. Thanks buckaroo

Valve has already made moves with Trade Protection for CS2 items and is shopping the idea around to other game devs, if they want to add it for their game items.

It isn't retroactive so, it does nothing for you now anyways but things are happening.

You can read about Trade Protection for CS2 items from the official KB article. Specifically...

Which games have Trade Protected items?

Currently, the only game supporting Trade Protected items is Counter-Strike 2. As we learn more about this, we plan to make this available to other games on Steam.

Ahhhh yea i did read about that but yea unfortunately it isnt applied to rust yet which is the only skins I had thank God lol
Gets phished, claims something failed on Steam's end.

Account security is your responsibility.
