Why?

Everything will go slower (game load times for example) and you will get worse performance since everything has to go over that usb 2.0 connection.

Why don't you get a bigger hdd for your laptop instead?

Move your non-steam stuff to the external drive?

Just looking at newegg, there aren't many 2TB 2.5" internal hard drives (laptop drives) -- only one I see is $209.99 (here)[www.newegg.com] (which is comparable to a mid-range USB external). A 1TB internal drive would run under $100. (link to 1TB drives)[www.newegg.com].

However, a 1TB drive dedicated to Steam will work for a while. I installed a 3TB in my desktop for steam/games/apps, and I've used less than 200GB with 60 games installed. 1TB will store around 150-180 5GB games.

Also take into account the transfer speeds. USB 2.0 is 480MBit/second maximum transfer rate (60MByte/sec), SATA is 3.0 GBit/second (375MByte/sec)
