I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

Anyone else with the "White screen" bug in TF2??? (Fullscreen mode)
XeonDead 5 Feb, 2013 @ 8:10pm
Is it only for me that i can actually see Counter-Strike: Source on my steam games for linux list?
Aoi Blue 23 Dec, 2012 @ 6:20am
TF2 seems to be working good for me.

It has WAY faster response times than the Windows version. The reports from Valve's dev-team are right about the Source-engine working so much better in Linux.

I did experience one X-Server crash myself when I toggled the setting for "multi-core" rendering. However, it loaded correctly with the new settings the next time I started it. It seems most Linux drivers perform better with that setting, as I think it might also reoptomize for muti-threaded rendering, which Linux does on any capable hardware.

As of optimizing, on more modest ATI Radeon hardware, you can get a big boost by turning off FSAA, Motion Blur and cutting LOD. The penalty for large texture maps and shaders seems minimal, as long as you have enough video memory to hold them all.
torrentow.***** 21 Dec, 2012 @ 5:19am
Damn, TF2 crash my X.org :C

Horney as a note on the opposite side of the spectrum, if you want to tweak out your gaming rig and don't care how long it takes or how much you have to learn, and aren't afraid of a little learning by failure, I recommend Gentoo.

The whole category is "install from source." They are attempts to make "Linux from Scratch" more practical.
Aoi Blue 11 Sep, 2012 @ 5:27pm
Horney, are you trying to start a flame war. *joking*

Seriously, no one distribution can serve the needs of everyone in the world, that is why there are many out there. Thus, I cannot recommend one without knowing what you would like in a Linux Distribution for gaming, and even still, my answer will contain plenty of opinion that may vary from other people's opinions.

However, if you want something easy to setup that is easy to find packages for, I recommend a mainstream distro. Good choices include Ubuntu-Based (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu and Lubuntu) CentOS, PCLinuxOS and OpenSUSE to just name a few.

Even with Compositing on in XFCE I rarely see any loss of performance in OpenGL on my machine.

To give you an idea of the difference, it's about a 2% cost on GLMark2 to enable compositing on XFCE and about a 30% cost on KDE. The two score identical with compositing off, but I have enough system resources to handle KDE, most of which is a larger memory footprint
