Disclaimer:

This review was changed from Negative to Positive on 5/5/2024 due to the reversal of a major blunder by Sony. Sony attempted to force PC players to use PSN accounts to play the game, after it was optional for the first 3 months of the game's life. Sony is known for frequent data breaches, and as such attempted to force PC players to hand over their personal data to a company that is incapable of keeping it safe. THIS DECISION WAS REVERSED AND PC PLAYERS NO LONGER NEED A PSN ACCOUNT AS OF 5/5/2024. My stance on Arrowhead's Community Management team remains the same. Their professionalism and ability to actually perform their jobs leave much to be desired. The only exception to this is Twinbeard, who has been phenomenal in every way.

Right, disclaimer over. Now that Ive done my part in the protesting its time to actually review this game and get off the soapbox.

HellDivers 2 is a game so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ patriotic it'll have the most devout American screaming "FOR SUPER EARTH!" in minutes. You, the dear naive player, take the role of a Hell Diver. One of Super Earth's most elite-est and most super soldiers.

Your goal? Vanquish the enemies of Super Earth where ever they may be.
These enemies are:
-The Tyranids- Disgusting insectoid aliens that come in all shapes, sizes, and methods of extermination. The bug live underground in hives but will nest and patrol the surface. You'll find they operate almost exclusively on melee based attacks, but move quickly and in large numbers. Some of the bastards even fly. Unfortunately for these crimes against creation, they're made of oil. And Super Earth loves oil. Best dealt with through the rapid and liberal usage of fire and explosives. Brother, get the Flamer. The Heavy Flamer.

-The Automotons- If you've played the first game you may remember the Cyborgs and their native planet of Cyberstan. If you haven't, they were exactly what they sound like. Either way, these shiny metal socialist wackjobs are the descendants of the Cyborgs. Gone is the weak flesh, replaced by glorious metal. These guys are slower and may not always be in massive groups like the bugs. The kicker is that these guys shoot back, and some of them have bigger guns than you. Lasers and explosives will be your friend as you rend CPU from chassis. Stick to cover and aim for the head and glowy bits. You might just make it out of there alive.
---Insert Obligatory "Remember The Creek!" Line Here---

-Sony- These guys may just be the biggest opponent yet. Worth 16 Trillion Yen and incapable of making good decisions. Keep your data close and the Terms of Service closer.

This all sounds terrifying, right? Maybe? Eventually.
But its not all doom and blood waterfalls. We have STRATAGEMS to help us!
These funky little orbs of doom are programmable grenades that you must program (no ♥♥♥♥) and throw do rain down supplies, weapons, or glorious democratic ordinance on the battlefield.
We have:
-Ammo Boxes
-Railguns
-Machine Guns
-Laser Cannons
-Drones
-500Kg Bombs
-380mm Orbital Barrages
-A literal mech suit
and a mountain more that I can't be bothered to type out.

Now you may be wondering? "Gee is this review ever gonna end?" Maybe, we'll see how I feel when the coffee runs dry.
Now for personal weapons! We've got your standard First/Third person shooter options. ARs, shotguns, laser rifles, marksman rifles, etc. Some of them have variants that make them hit harder or deal fire damage, standard stuff. Nothing ground breaking in this category for the most part.

Im gonna wrap this up, youre bored and I dont feel like typing anymore. SO IN SHORT:
GAME GOOD. SONY BAD. ARROWHEAD MOSTLY GOOD.
Get the game, support the devs here. They got the raw end of the stick with Sony harpooning their best game 3 months into service and have 6 years of development.
You'll enjoy it. I promise.
Now get out their and join the fight before I report you to the Democracy Officer for being a piece of traitorous filth.

Early Access Review
TL;DR: Abandoned, some devs now working on Crypto scam instead.

Was following development for this game for a few years. Game has gone quiet and Steam has seen nothing since September of 2020. Game is abandoned. Do not waste your time or money here. Also looks like 2 of the Devs have since moved onto to working for a VRMMO Crypto scam. If that's not a sign that things aren't going to get better, I don't know what is.
0/10 lots of potential absolutely wasted

Early Access Review
I've held off writing a review for Trailmakers as I'm normally not a fan of writing them in general. However, Trailmakers stands out in a way that was very welcome after scouring Steam for games similar. Trailmakers scratches an itch for building that works so well.

I've owned Trailmakers since its public release date (January 31st, 2018) and I've seen both infuriating and amazing changes to this game.
Positive Things:
-Content, lots of content, it seems like as one update releases and I get the hang of it, BOOM, another update with even more ♥♥♥♥ to mess with drops. Never a boring moment when building.
-Awesome devs that actually interact with their community, theres developer live streams every Friday AND (Jamie and Stidsholt especially) can be seen talking and joking with people in the discord. Flashbulb has a Trello page set up for Trailmakers that allows the community to add suggestions for things they want in game. The Trello acts as a sort of early patch notes so we always have a rough idea of whats going on.
-Multiplayer! It's buggy and laggy but it works and when it works well its amazing! Picture if you will a giant shark chasing a small submarine around an underwater race track. That can happen and has happened, messing around with friends is the best way to experience this game. Don't have anyone to play with? The Trailmakers Discord server is full of awesome people waiting to screw around together. I met one of my best friends, Kronogenics, through that server.

Negative Things:
-Multiplayer? How can that be both a positive and a negative???? I said its laggy and buggy but when it works it works great. Those laggy and buggy parts can be super frustrating to deal with sometimes, there have been times where it can take close to 10-15 minutes to get everyone you want in your game to load and have things go relatively well. I have noticed that shutting down and restarting the server does improve performance greatly if done ~every 1-2 hours in-game. I'm sure this will get ironed out in the future so, take this one with a grain of salt.
-Game breaking bugs, they're few and far between but when they happen can be super irritating, there have been times I've enountered bugs that refuse to let me save my builds or exit build mode, meaning my vehicle doesn't save to my history. Again, these are few and far between but expect them, Trailmakers is early access so they will happen, if you aren't ready to mess with bugs then maybe wait a bit.

I can't even begin to list all the times I've said "WHOA, LOOK AT THAT! That's awesome!" it happens multiple times, every day. It seeming like everyday the vehicles can crazier and the ideas wilder.

My first day of Trailmakers went something like this:
>Experince bug refuse to load game
>Bug goes away, load up game and join official Discord
>Meet Sky Cheetah (discord mod), host MP server and build first hover with advice from cheetah
>Make stupidly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ oversized hover with ♥♥♥♥♥ movement
>Brainstorm ideas for the rest of the night
>Go to be... Is that the sun????
>Repeat next day until first decent hover is made

Now my days are closer to:
>Look at concept art
>Build version of concept art
>Become victim of underwater "Fox Hunting" performed by a man named TheKat
>Blow-up endlessly
>Master Controls
>Contemplate name of vehicle and do stupid ♥♥♥♥
>Get roasted on the discord
>Wouldn't have it any other way

Trailmakers is a diamond among a crowd of endless clones of building sims, if you've seen this and you keep contemplating buying it, JUST DO IT!!!!! The game is amazing and I can't wait to see where it goes in the future.

Happy Trailmaking,
-Fox (aka Klap Them Nuts)
