Zen of Wargame
Apprentice once asked Hob_Gadling: "What is the art of war?" Hob_Gadling answered:"A mountain, a forest, the sun and moon. What do they fear?" The apprentice meditated upon this and understood.

Master Tzu has said: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle". Only upon reflecting yourself can enlightenment be achieved.

The wise general is in harmony with all that surrounds him. Everyone will scurry to fulfill his wishes. The bad general is not in harmony and does not understand this. His wishes go unheeded. For the wise general understands what he can ask and what he can not; and the foolish general does not. As surely as you can not ask an elephant to crawl into tiny crack or mouse to move boulders, you can not ask tanks to fight in cramped spaces and infantry to cross wide open plains.

Tanks are the measurement in which everything is valued. For they fear nothing at long ranges except other, bigger, tanks. To trap a tank you must take away its speed; and only then will the tiger be toothless. Missiles can blossom from treelines; infantry can swarm it at close ranges; and gunships seek out tanks. A wise tank is cautious but not scared. For the main gun means death to the unwise hunter. This is what it means to be a tank.

Infantry are like ants, numerous and hard to kill. They survive everywhere and thrive against any beast if they can swarm it. But one step backwards and the mightiest ant colony is nothing but a blur of harmless movement. The wise queen never sends her children into places where they can be stepped on; unless she deems the carcass of the beast worthy of the sacrifice.

Apprentice once asked Hob_Gadling: "Should I use specialist infantry?" Hob_Gadling answered: "A thousand drops of rain, are they alike?" The apprentice meditated upon this and understood.

To open eyes that are not there and see the truth. This is the zen of recon.

Apprentice approached Hob_Gadling and said: "I can not touch enemy helicopters". Hob_Gadling answered: "It is a bright, sunny day. Why are you unhappy?" At that moment the apprentice understood.

Tube and rocket artillery are as the chicken and the hawk. One is happy to peck at seeds; other lives for the hunt. Do not ask the chicken to hunt or hawk to peck for that will bring disharmony and sadness.

Apprentice once boasted to Hob_Gadling: "Anti-tank missiles can bring down any tanks, for they are mighty!" Hob_Gadling answered: "Why does tiger wrestle with thunder?" The apprentice understood and was quiet for the rest of the day.

Supply unit are the ground beneath your feet. You do not pay it any attention until the day it no longer is there. A wise general understands when you must leap and when you must stand firmly. Further, he understands the difference between standing and leaping. A foolish general leaps off the mountain and does not know why he does it.

There are numerous units and yet there are but a few. Do not count the number of units you do not have. For when selecting his deck, a wise general understands that the units are there to suit his inner self. Foolish general does not understand his own temperament or wishes; he chooses elephants when he should choose mouses and asks chickens to hunt like hawks. The wise general understands himself and the foolish general, for he himself has once been one, and thus his victory is assured. The foolish general understands neither the wise general nor himself; thus, he has defeated himself before fighting has started.

When the general embarks upon his journey of enlightenment tanks are only tanks and gunships are only gunships. When he has traveled upon the path tanks are no longer only tanks nor are gunships any longer only gunships. And when he has reached the end of his journey and attained enlightenment, then are tanks once again tanks and gunships once again gunships. This is the zen of Wargame.

Apprentice approached Hob_Gadling and said to him: "CURRENT META". Hob_Gadling did not answer but looked wistful. At that moment the apprentice was enlightened.

Sun Tzu is overrated only on the idea that Sun Tzu discussed basic logic one must take when acting in a situation on which defeat was dire, of which war, especially pre-industrial, often was. Many wars in history have been decided within a dozen victories, over the course of a few weeks. Even these wars are often decided by 1 or 2 battles, taking course over an hour. Often times the losers could have won, and other times the losers could have avoid the conflict entirely. This is the basis for the art of war. Fight not the battle that you are unlikely to win. Fight not under the hope to push that wish cannot be pushed. Recognize your strengths and fight hard else you'll be rolled by those that do.

That is all The Art of War is trying to say. You have limited resources no matter how large, you cant do everything, so fight as if you cant do everything.

sun tzu was quite overrated
a defeat , or "failure", is an opportunity to learn more than you could from a victory, you must listen and not just "hear", it is not enough to "hear", one must listen.
through learning you gain knowledge, but through knowledge you gain wisdom
"Knowledge is learned; wisdom is earned".
