Tomoya Okazaki is a high school student in third grade. His mother Atsuko died when he was a child, leaving Tomoya alone with his father Naoyuki. Since Atsuko's death, Naoyuki has become an alcoholic and gambler, and has started beating his son.
One day, Tomoya had the shoulder dislocated by his father; since then, Naoyuki treats him well but with distance, as if they were only strangers and not a family.
It hurts Tomoya more than being beaten, so he gets into the habit of hanging out because he does not want to go home.
In addition, his shoulder injury forced Tomoya to leave his basketball club, which caused him to move away from school and his activities. That's when he becomes a delinquent.
His friend Yōhei Sunohara (春 原 陽平, Sunohara Yōhei), Who was kicked out of the football club after a fight, is also an offender who often hangs out with Tomoya.

Clannad's story begins on April 14, 2003, at the beginning of the school year, when Tomoya accidentally meets Nagisa Furukawa, a sweet girl who is older than him by one year, but who is doubling her last year of high school.
because she was very sick the year before. She wants to join the theater club, which she was not able to do during her illness, but she discovers that the club was disbanded because all her members went to university.
As Tomoya has time to spare, he decides to help Nagisa to reform a theater club. During this time, he meets several other girls, whom he meets and helps to solve their problems.
