#1 Strafe Jumping
Strafe Jumping allows you to accelerate far beyond your ground movement speed by strafing and turning in the same direction while airborne. In this first video I break out the components of a strafe jump and how to achieve rapid acceleration with it.

I encourage new players to focus more on the first half of the video; turning into your strafe at the proper angle. Switching from side to side should only be done when it's necessary to avoid running into a wall. Often when playing a live match you'll only be jumping two to four times before needing to engage your opponent. Try to plan your strafe jump trajectory so that it's not necessary to correct your turn for as long as possible. Once this becomes second nature to you, correcting your direction in the middle of a strafe jump should come naturally with time.

It's recommended to turn on the speedometer when practicing so it's easier to see when you start accelerating as well as what your speed exactly is. This setting is found under the first options menu. Max default run speed is between 300 and 320 units per second (depending on champion). With proper technique you should be able to accelerate up to 600 in a few hops. As explained in the next section, it's possible to get your speed over 380 on the ground before your first jump.
#0 Circle Jumping
Below is a 3 minute video explaining the components of a Circle Jump. The techniques explained demonstrate how to raise your ground speed as fast as possible before jumping; as well as how to continue to accelerate through the air as you do in a Strafe Jump.

Many players would argue Circle Jumping should be learned before Strafe Jumping, but if I can grab your attention for only 5 minutes then Strafe Jumping is slightly more important; hence why I decided to label this as Episode 0.
Basic Combat
I've yet to make a video on this, but I think it's important to review a few combat basics for players starting out with Quake.

The best advice to give to someone struggling at finding success in Quake is to focus more on staying alive than finding kills. Learn where the mega health and armor spawns and try to keep topped off as much as possible. Mega Health and Heavy Armor spawn every 30 seconds, Light Armors spawn every 15 seconds. Having a better health and armor stack can go a long way to makeup for other gaps in skill; even consider if you're attacking an equally skilled opponent that the player with the larger stack will probably come out the victor.

Rockets and Lighting Gun are also important weapons for a proper defense. On top of good damage they have excellent push back which can help a player in creating enough space to grab some nearby health bubbles. When fighting against an opponent using Rockets or Lightning Gun try to refrain from jumping as well. Jumping should only be used in desperation to evade the last hit; otherwise jumping makes your movement very easy to predict, track, and punish. Instead stay grounded and strafe left to right as well as forward and backward unpredictably.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a lot more of course that can be talked about with combat, but I think as far as the bare essentials go, this is the most valuable information I can give you from the start. I'll probably make a short video regarding this eventually and would really like your feedback on how this worked for you, or if you're a more advanced player how this can be improved.
#2 Chain Jumping
Often called Ledge Jumping, and similar in execution to Ramp Jumping in Quake Live or Double Jumping in Quake 2; Chain Jumping allows you to gain extra height on your jump if you're able to chain two jumps within a half second of one another.

You'll find several opportunities to shortcut maps by using Chain Jumps, and many of them require good Circle and Strafe Jumping techniques to achieve.
#3 Rocket Jumping
While there are as many varieties of rocket jumps as there are colors of the rainbow, here some primary techniques to get players started. All of these may be practiced on the basic training map so free and champion pack owners may practice these there.

The delayed rocket jump is often an overlooked tool. Its most popular application is perhaps on Blood Covenant jumping to heavy armor from tribolt. On Blood Covenant it's used to jump from the rocket launcher over towards the light armor and attacking mega health from an unexpected position; it can be used to gaurantee a bridge-to-rail jump as well.

Rocket boosting on basic training can be a little tricky. The post I used at the beginning training area is difficult to get a good angle on, but practicing this will get you ready to perform it in a live match. Players have zero self damage and infinite rockets in Unholy Trinity (as well as Hot Rockets) which is ideal for learning how to use all varieties of rocket jumping.

Also remember that players take half damage from rocket jumps normally (and Ranger only quarter damage). Because of this consider not only using Rocket Jumps to get to places where there isn't a jump pad, but also using a jump pad may be risking more damage than using a surprise rocket jump
#4 Keybindings
While the Quake Community is legendary for innovating WASD which is ubiquitous for PC gaming, the community by no means has stopped devising keybindings to give them a competitive edge. This is a review on many of these innovations you'll see in the community.

Some, like descrete weapon binds to the scroll wheel, many consider this quite necessary at stepping up your game to the highest level. However most others are simply fun deviations which have their reasons for being used, but aren't as necessary for success as the former.
#5 Mouse Settings
Tuning your mouse to have consistent behavior between games is very important to playing like a champion. This video is a quick review on what you need to do to properly configure this along with a few tools and suggestions to help you along the way.
