If you have a fast computer, you might not have time to read many of the tutorial messages that appear during loading screens. There are a few key game mechanisms that one must understand to consistently win races at moderate difficulties and this guide will attempt to outline some of them.
Start Here (with boost!)
In order to get the best possible start, press and hold the accelerator a moment after the announcer says "Get Ready" and a moment before the screen flashes. If you timed this procedure correctly, your tail-pipes should begin glowing red. With each subsequent count and screen-flash in the countdown, release the accelerator ever so briefly and re-apply it. If successful, you should see your exhaust change colors again to purple and finally blue. This process will grant you a level 3 boost to begin the race, which will go a long way towards mitigating the terrible pole position you're given at the beginning of each race.
Drifting for Boost
When approaching a significant bend, apply your brakes without releasing the accelerator. You will enter drift mode. If you hold your drift for sufficient duration without a major crash, you'll gain a level of boost. As you continue drifting, your boost level will continue to rise up to a maximum of level 3 (blue exhaust). If you release the brake without releasing the accelerator, you will ignite the accumulated boost for a major dose of speed. While drifting, it is possible to change direction without launching your boost by quickly releasing and re-applying your brake while swiftly steering. If the maneuver is executed quickly and smoothly enough, you can extend your drift significantly. There are a lot more curves than straight-a-ways in this game, so learning to drift boost effectively can give you a major advantage.
Tricks for Boost
I'm not sure what the parallel control is for folks using a keyboard, wheel, or more unusual controller, but for dual-stick gamepad users it is possible to execute tricks by flicking the right analog stick whilst airborne. Each trick successfully executed will grant a level of boost. It takes a little bit of experimentation to learn the minimum hang-time necessary to pull off a given procession of tricks, but it is very important to do so. A failed trick won't cause a wreck, but it will slow you down significantly.
Closing
If you're new to the game and finding that weaker cars are zooming past you without any obvious reason, it's likely that they are exploiting one of the techniques previously described. Because the game doesn't really hold your hand and build your skills or even make you aware of these techniques outside of momentary text flashes while loading levels, it's worth taking a little time to learn about them and work them into your racing. I hope this guide helps!

Dibz

As nice as these tips are (I figured all of them out since I play SRB2Kart a lot more before this) this still is the most inferior party racer. I can play as aggressively and as skillfully as ever and still not even make top three due to the game deciding you deserve death.

yo, important thing i didnt see (its probably in here somewhere but i didnt quite comb through all the 12 pages of comments this bad boy has), when you're doing a start boost you can get away with tapping the acceleration button when the screen is fully black, which is *about* halfway between each number count

When you do a Trick Boost you can only do 3 tricks of a direction and in you flick the R-Stick to fast on the 4th trick in chain you can mess up everything.

For Keyboard players the WASD keys work as tricks, the Q as a rareview, E for items, Space for Drift/Brake, Shift to accel and the arow keys to drive.

(this info. comes with the game manual, wich also comes with the game if you purchased it on Steam)

This game should definitely explain some more things outside of loading-screens.
Perhaps that's kind of the "classic" way to do it, but it literally took hours to find out things by just stumbling upon them or trying to figure them out. Which for something like racing is no good or fun.
And like others have said; Any decently fast computer will blow past the loading-screens. - Sometimes I wish they'd put in a "press to continue" kind of thing from the loading-menu. - That might bother some, though perhaps it could be checked as an option. - But if not, they should really put in tips somewhere else.
I even kind of had this issue with 'Assassin's Creed: Valhalla' and that's a much more demanding open-world game. Perhaps because it's loaded onto an NVMe, but it barely allows me to read one sentence sometimes. - Kind of ironic how in the past as kids we were like "Hurry up!" )=< and now it's like "Hey, wait!" D=>.

Oh, and one more thing. When flying, if you do a trick to doge right before hitting an obstacle, you get a "risk boost". That's something I just found out a few days ago.
