Unlocking the Characters
Commando: Unlocked at the start of the game.

Hunter: Make it through 3 teleporters without dying.

Engineer: Make it through 30 teleporters in total. (This does not have to be done in one game, it's just overall)

MUL-T: Complete the first area five times (Again, does not have to be done in one run.)

Artificer: Requires 10 Luna Coins, which drop at a low rate (Higher chance at higher difficulties), and is bought from the newt shop.

Mercenary: Sacrifice yourself to the obelisk, which requires you to luck out on getting an event message in your chat log saying "A celestial orb has appeared". You then are required to kill the boss before the teleporter is powered up, and a white blue portal will take you to an obelisk and when killing yourself at it, you will unlock the mercenary. You must make one "loop" through in order for this orb to appear. (Thanks Gorilla! Wasn't aware of this!)

Nah mate, there is no cap on Lunar coins. You have to get a portal to the Lunar shop to get her.

Wait how do you get the artificer? isn't the cap lunar coins 10 plus you have to give one to the newt altar? where do you get the last coin

Just throwing this out there, I got a portal on the snow map like Edward said but I wasn't looped. It's a mystery!

Thing is, I've had instances where we did multiple loops and didn't get an orb. I was just updating it with information as I go and as it becomes more clear. Thank you all for your help in making the guide better, and I mean that sincerely! <3

To get to obelisk, you really just have to do one loop and then during snow map (third level) the portal will just appear, always has for me so far at least

Hes talking about the usual boss you have to kill before leaving each area.

I wasn't required to kill any boss for the Mercenary. It just took me straight to the parkour area for the Obelisk. If you're referring to the boss from the golden orb (from buying from the Golden Golem Shrine thing) then those are two separate things. No idea what boss you're talking about.
