Earning Some Achievements
By Wowza
This is a guide to earning some achievements. (But you probably figured that out from the title already.) This guide details the best levels to earn achievements on, and what to do once you get to those levels. Enjoy, and don't forget to rate this guide!

This guide only has some of the achievements; for the other ones, see this guide.

If you have something that you'd like me to add, please put it in the comments. Regular commenters that want to contribute will be made contributors.

Hooligan
Description: "Unlock hooligan avatar by smashing gophers in the options menu. Make them all disappear at the same time"

This achievement will unlock the character "Hooligan" (selected in the options).
You go from the main menu in the "Options" and you can see in the background that there are 3 squirrels. This is a mini-game.

By clicking on them, you have to get all the squirrels to hide. This should be done quickly.

Hint: Every ground squirrel is hiding for some time.
There's a New Sheriff in Town
Description: "Capture Xitrof along with his two replicas."

Level: The last one.

You need to capture Xitrof - along with his two doubles - with one capture. This should be easy.

Grab a small piece of paving the way around the star. Xitrof should be inside your circle. When will the final piece, wait until he calls doubles and complete the capture.
Z-Day (HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT 1)
Description: "Unlock Zombie Mode."

You know that bird in the main menu? You know how, when you move your mouse cursor over that bird, it tweets? Cute, right? Not any more. Move your mouse over and off it rapidly for around 5 seconds. If you do it right, the screen will black out and Zombie Mode will appear. Congratulations!
Merry-go-round
Description: "Make a magic missile do a full circle around you."

The easier way to this involves becoming immortal (either through getting the shield powerup, or dying right before you attempt to get the achievement); after doing so, you can manuver so that the magic "ball" goes around you.

Alternatively, you can run away from it around the map using the Ctrl key to speed up.
The Conqueror
Description: "Conquer at least 45% of the playfield with a single capture."

Level: User guigo suggests the second one, as you can do it with a single capture.

If you are trying to get this achievement, to avoid insanity capture all enemies before attempting a massive capture. Or, try a level on which the enemies are relatively not annoying.

Remember that if your capture is over 50%, the game might end up capturing the opposite portion of the field from where you're aiming. This still works, however.
Super Combo
Description: "Make a 5x combo."

Level: 4th to unlock (the southern one)

This achievement will probably unlock by itself sooner or later (when you meet the requirements, of course) but if it refuses to, just go to the level above; it's easy, and there are a lot of things to capture.
Greed is Good
Description: "Capture an Oarkland or Dwarkland level in less than 10 captures."

As with other achievements, easier levels work better for this than hard ones. Try to pick one with the smallest number of obstructions possible.
Square Deal
Description: "Make a perfect square."

As far as I know, there is no guaranteed method of earning this achievement. It'll just unlock by itself sooner or later. (Hopefully).

If you're trying to earn it, small squares work better than big squares because there's a better chance of them being perfect squares.

There seems to be a margin of error allowed, however small, so don't start measuring the screen. You can probably eyeball this achievement.

Hint from Tamr: "I just played the game today and got the achievement by accident, i'd suggest using the arrow keys for better control and start off from a flat baseline"

Hint from sfnhtlb: "I got it along the way, but if I was just trying to get the achievement would probably try it along the baseline in a continous "slow" area - sea, swamp, as the smaller the square you are trying to make, the more likely it will be exactly the same - from the baseline you effectively only have to get the first two moves the same, then the return is bound to be the same length, so it shouldn't be too hard to get in a few tries."
Let there be light
Description: "Make all the shires shine on the map."

There is no level for this: just go to the level selection screen.

You know how when you move your cursor over a kingdom, it glows? Well, you have to make ALL of them glow. At the same time.

It's not fun, but if you move your mouse really quickly, you'll get the achievement.
Traveler
Description: "Travel 1000 miles."

You can see how far you've traveled by going to the "Profiles" screen (from the main menu).

Happy walking...
Right tool for the right job
Description: "Destroy a magic orb with a catapult."

Level: One of the last ones.

One of the last levels will have a couple of towers to destroy themselves. It seems that catapults on the magic orb are not enough.
Dragon Farming (Dragon Master, Dragon Slayer)
Dragon Master

Description: "Capture 100 dragons."

Dragon Slayer

Description: "Capture 300 dragons."

Dragon Farming (in general)

Try one of the easier levels (the one with three dragons works well). It will take a while, but (I believe) you can see your progress in the stats screen by going to "Profiles" in the main menu.

Just started the game today, accidentally began the tutorial and went back to the map so I could skip it. I think it was right after I clicked the first level the Traveller achievement popped up... :x

Thanks for the great guide btw. :)

Yes, the second hidden achievement is indeed for completing Z-Day . That said, though, it goes by fairly quickly. Outside of a few levels that can get cramped, the levels can really soar by.

I thought something like that as well; hope it isn't something like Beat the Z mode. D:

@davOdo I'm not sure, but I bet it has something to do with the mode you unlock while getting the first hidden achievement.

If you look into the Game's Objectives section, there is another hidden achievement that is not listed on Steam. Does anyone know what to do to unlock it?

oops accidentally rmoved my comment, yeah a nice level for dragon farming would be great, as well as "would impossible mode achievements be achieved if you do it on zombie mode"
