Joe Pt1, from Roll Call to Visiting Hour
1954: ALCATRAZ walkthrough by Gene Mocsy, based on internal documents from Daedalic Entertainment.

JOE'S ADVENTURE, PART 1

CELL
Pick up your GLASS SHIV from behind the grate, under the sink.
Take your PAIN PILLS from the bottom-left shelf in the corner.

Open your inventory and drag out your GLASS SHIV. Apply it to your mattress to get your hidden MONEY.
Inside your inventory, drag SHIV HANDLE to GLASS SHARD to repair your GLASS SHIV.
Walk out of your cell. It's roll call.

CELLBLOCK
Whisper to HANK, the old timer. Ask about his escape plan.
Examine your surroundings and the other convicts.
When the bell rings, you walk to the mess hall.

MESS HALL
Talk to Hank, Gas Pipe and Bumpy. They may have information to help your escape. Gas Pipe will probably mention a scheme of his to get you a private conversation with your wife.
Try not to stab anyone. If you do, the scene resets.
Eat your food, and you'll pocket a PANCAKE.
Exit to the visitor's room.

VISITOR ROOM
Your wife, Christine, arrives a little late. You can talk to her but the guard keeps interrupting.
Click Gas Pipe and take him up on that offer.
Talk to Christine. Either tell her the TRUTH or LIE. Your choice, but it affects the state of your marriage.

The game switches to Christine's point-of-view at this point. You can return to Joe, later.
Christine Pt1, from the Pier to Chinatown

CHRISTINE'S ADVENTURE, PART 1

PIER (DUSK)
Dialog with MICKEY and his THUG. Choose your words carefully and Mickey will let you go.

(optional) Look at Alcatraz through a telescope to feel sad.

Go home. Joe probably left a clue there.

APARTMENT HALLWAY
Examine the lock on your apartment door, then go in.

APARTMENT (TRASHED)
Someone trashed your apartment! Click on any item to clean up the place. If only it were that easy in real life!

APARTMENT
You will take the SAFE PLANS from the globe, with dialogue influenced by whether or not Joe lied to you in the visitor's room.

You now know that VIVIAN THE LANDLADY, SUTTER the poet and BERNADETTE the artist have keys. Somehow it's connected to the LOOT that you need to find.

Grab SHEET MUSIC from the piano (the ivories).
Take a BOBBY PIN from the drawer.
Pull VALO from its hiding place in the Chinese lamp.
Take your best Jazz RECORD, next to the turntable.
(optional) Find a MATCHBOOK in the clothes on the rack.

(optional) Turn on the hi-fi to hear some West Coast jazz.
(optional) Talk to the cat.

Climb out the window and onto the FIRE ESCAPE.

FIRE ESCAPE
DALE is waiting here to talk to you. He hits on you and you can agree to sleep with him by asking him inside. Or you can send him away. The secret Marriage Level for JOE and CHRISTINE goes up or down by 5 LOVEPOINTS depending on your choice.

If you sleep with DALE, you learn more about the heist. Re-enter the fire escape afterward.

(optional) Pick up LUCKY LAGER from the Flower Box.

Pull the PLATE FRONT out of the Flower Box. If you examine it in your inventory, you see it's for a forged $20.

(optional) Try to talk to the mysterious stranger across the alley.

Go back to the Apartment, then leave through the door.

MAP OF NORTH BEACH
You can switch between Joe and Christine at any time now, by clicking on their portraits in the inventory. But let's stay with Christine and explore a bit.
Go to your LANDLADY'S APARTMENT by clicking on the noodle soup icon on the map.

CHINESE RESTAURANT
Walk to the stairs on the right to go up to the Landlady's Apartment.

LANDLADY'S APARTMENT
(optional) Examine the rubber gloves to the left. Hmm. What is your landlady up to?

Your LANDLADY, Vivian Wong, is in bed, exhausted. Talk to her and agree to bring her some HOT SOUP WITH WINTER MELON.

Go back down to the Restaurant.

CHINESE RESTAURANT
Pick up the MENU and learn the Chinese characters for Winter Melon. Get WINTER MELON CHARACTERS in your inventory.

Go the left to the restaurant kitchen.

RESTAURANT KITCHEN
Use the WINTER MELON CHARACTERS with Herb Drawers at the back of the kitchen. Receive WINTER MELON.

Pick up a LADLE from the center of the stove. Use the ladle with the pot nearby. Get a bowl of SOUP.

In your inventory, combine WINTER MELON with SOUP to make it delicious.

(optional) Try to touch the ducks at the back of the kitchen.

Go back to VIVIAN.

LANDLADY'S APARTENT
Give Vivian the HOT SOUP WITH WINTERMELON.
Talk to her.
Ask whether JOE left anything for you.
Vivian remembers an old radio and directs you to her nephew XIAOWEN at the CHINESE OPERA. Xiaowen may have it backstage.
(optional) Ask what she used to do back in China.

Leave the building.

EXT. NORTH BEACH MAP
Click on the Chinese opera mask symbol to go to the Chinese Opera.

CHINATOWN ALLEY
Use a BOBBY PIN on the Gate.
Enter the Chinese Opera.

INT. CHINESE OPERA BACKSTAGE
Find Vivian's radio.
(It's under a headdress.)
Talk to XIAOWEN.
(optional) Ask him about the Camfield novel he's reading.
Tell him you need that radio.
He will only give you the radio if you prove you're Beat.
Take a BOBBY PIN from the large trunk. You'll probably need it.
Leave the theater in search of something Beat.

MAP OF NORTH BEACH
Click on the coffee cup to walk to the Beat Café.

BEAT CAFE (CLOSED)
Police Detective Grassi has closed the Café and he's the only one who can legally open it. POLICE DEPARTMENT is now available as a location on the map.
Option 1) Use a BOBBY PIN with the lock on the Café door to break in.
You'll be arrested by Grassi, and he'll take you an Interrogation Room at the police station.
Option 2) You can go the Police Department yourself and ask Grassi to re-open the Café.

POLICE STATION INTERROGATION ROOM
IF you've been arrested, Grassi will interrogate you.
Talk to him, and ask him if he's going to hold you. He has to admit there's not enough evidence.
Go to the door.
As you exit, he asks you to have dinner tonight. If you agree, you both go to the ITALIAN RESTAURANT. It's the only way to get back your stuff and make him re-open the Café.
If you decline for now, you'll have to visit him at his office and he'll ask again.

DETECTIVE'S OFFICE
Walk in and talk with GRASSI.
End the conversation and look at the papers on the table to the right. Try to take the file.
You can make Grassi look away by asking him to find your old arrest report. When he looks away, steal a PHOTO from Joe's file.
If you ask Grassi to re-open the Café, he'll want a date, first. You have to agree to have dinner with him. Sorry.

ITALIAN RESTAURANT
In both cases, you end up at La Roma restaurant on an awkward date with the Detective.
You've finished your meal. Talk to Grassi, try to leave, talk to him some more.
You can look around the restaurant to find things to discuss.
(optional) Interact with the old tintype to the right of the door.
(optional) Interact with the gallery flyer to the left of the door.
Click on the door and try to leave.
Eventually, Grassi will give you back your inventory (if he confiscated it) and you'll exit, skipping dessert.

BEAT CAFE
Grassi kept his promise. The Café is open.
Take the MANUSCRIPT from the table – it's a handwritten play by a famous Beat author. It's dedicated to Christine and was a gift from Joe.
You can talk to the regulars later. Let's finish this Chinese Opera path.

MAP OF NORTH BEACH
Go back to the Chinese Opera.

CHINESE OPERA
Give XIAOWEN the MANUSCRIPT. He'll be impressed but he wants more proof of your Beatness – something he can use for a new show.
Give MUSIC SHEET to XIAOWEN and he'll let you take the RADIO.

LANDLADY'S APARTMENT
Give the RADIO back to Vivian. Inside the radio, you'll find the V KEY.
If you talk to VIVIAN, she'll tell you that if Joe was renovating an apartment on Grant Avenue. Maybe he hid something there?

MAP OF NORTH BEACH
Let's go to the completely optional Pier at the top of the map.

PIER (NIGHT)
Try to steal a boat from the fleet.
Look at Alcatraz and feel sad.

Now might be a good time to check in on Joe. Click on Joe's face in the inventory panel to jump to his story.
Joe Pt2, from the Yard to Punishment
1954: Alcatraz

Joe's Adventure, Part 2.

When you return to Joe's story, he's in the Alcatraz yard.

YARD
There are several people here that Joe has to talk to, but Gas Pipe walks up and tries to pick a fight. Punch him or try to talk him down.
After your encounter with Gas Pipe, you end up in SOLITARY.

SOLITARY
Talk to the LIZARD through the grate. Ask him everything you can to receive the LIZARD'S PLAN.
Try to exit. Talk to MASON THE GUARD.
Try to bargain for your release from solitary.
Mason tells you that it's up to the warden.
Until someone gives Mason a SIGNED WARDEN LETTER, Joe can't get out of solitary.

Luckily, you can switch to Christine right now.
Christine Pt2, the Nightclub favor

Remember to save every once in a while in case you want to try different options!

MAP OF NORTH BEACH
You'll find out later that Mason the Guard and his wife are fans of jazz. Let's visit Mickey's Club. Click on the mermaid icon on the map.

NIGHTCLUB EXTERIOR
The BOUNCER isn't letting anyone inside the club. They're clearing the room between sets.
You have THREE WAYS in:
1) Mouth off to the people waiting in front of club. The BOUNCER will think you're less trouble if you go inside. (This is probably the most fun.)
2) Show your BOOK OF MATCHES signed by Mickey, to the Bouncer.
3) Go around the back (exit right) and use a BOBBY PIN on the stage door.

IF JOE is in solitary: Bee the photographer walks to you right away, and points out a patron who apparently works with Joe.

It's MASON the guard. Talk to him. He gives you an EMPTY RELEASE FORM. If you can get the warden's signature onto it, Joe will be released from solitary.

Optional: Talk to Bee again, and go with her to the powder room. There you can talk briefly to the guard's wife, MRS. MASON.

Go to the left of the club's main room to enter the DRESSING ROOM.

(optional) Talk to Goldie the MERMAID about her Captain boyfriend, Alcatraz, and Mickey.

Take a rose from a bouquet to the left of the MERMAID. You can always use a rose in San Francisco.

Take a bobby pin from the Old Trunk on the floor.

Exit through the back door.

NORTH BEACH MAP
Go back to Vivian's apartment in Chinatown. She used to be an engraver, maybe she can help.

LANDLADY'S APARTMENT

Give the SOLITARY FORM to Vivian.

She's playing innocent.

Get the BACK FORGER PLATE by clicking on the drawer on the right. You got the FRONT FORGER PLATE from the window box on your fire escape. Combine them.

Give both FORGERY PLATES to VIVIAN to prove you know she is a forger. She makes you an offer for fake documents.

Give the SOLITARY FORM to VIVIAN again.
Give WARDEN LETTER to VIVIAN.
Receive the SIGNED SOLITARY FORM.

Go back to Mason at the night club

NIGHTCLUB MAIN ROOM
Give SIGNED SOLITARY FORM to MASON. Problem solved.
JOE will be released from solitary when Mason gets back to Alcatraz.

We switch to Joe automatically at this point.
Joe Pt3, from the Yard to Building 64
1954: Alcatraz

Joe's Adventure, Part 3.

Back to the Yard, your one chance to talk to other cons.

YARD
Talk to BUMPY. He's on hunger strike, so give him the PANCAKE to receive BUMPY'S PLAN.
If you give HANK your PAIN PILLS and PRISON MONEY when he asks for payment during his dialogue, he'll give you HANK'S PLAN. Talk to him and get the details. You'll have to pay him two times.

His plan involves getting into the hospital with a lot of rope.
You will probably be approached by a new convict who gives you a BOOK CARD to help you deal with Birdman, later.
Leave through the metal detector after all three PLANS are automatically combined into JOE'S PLAN.

METAL DETECTOR
(optional) Try to exit.
(optional) Examine the panel on the metal detector.
Talk to the new GUARD on the left – the one trying to fix the metal detector.
Give him a hint about how to fix the machine.
MASON the GUARD offers Joe a job as a floating repairman. Could be useful. Joe doesn't get paid, but he gets to walk around the island.

LAUNDRY
MASON provides JOE with a WRENCH to use later.
(optional) Try to just use your hands to fix the washer.

Collect HANGER 1 from the far laundry box, along with bed sheets to make ROPE.
Collect HANGER 2 from the washer to the left.
Pick up SHOELACE from the floor near the left washer. Everything's valuable on Alcatraz.

Combine HANGER 1 + 2 to create COMBINED HANGERS.
Use COMBINED HANGERS with CHIQUITAS washer to fix it and get some LINGERIE that was stuck inside. It was probably from some guard's wife.
.
Talk to CHIQUITA. Find out what she needs.
Give her the LINGERIE.
Chiquita flirts with JOE and offers him to make a KNIVE-PROOF VEST out of MAGAZINES. You will have to bring her two magazines for her to make a vest for you.

Exit the laundry.

ALCATRAZ MAP
We have a choice of repair jobs, but let's go to the power house first.

POWER ROOM
You are threatened by GAS PIPE, who is working between the boilers.
Gas Pipe holds a CAR JACK, which you absolutely need for your escape.
Fighting Gas Pipe is also a way to get to the hospital, and you need a long stay there for your escape.

But you can't fight GAS PIPE unless you have a KNIVE-PROOF VEST.

Pick up the ELECTRIC CABLE, WOOD BRUSH, FANBELT, and WHEEL CENTER from the foreground workbench.

Pick up PROJECTOR BULB near the window.

Try to start the big control panel.
Use ELECTRIC CABLE with control panel to patch it.

Enter the Generator area.
Open the Gear Box and take GEAR A and GEAR B. Examine them. One's too big, the other's too small. That helps you guess the size that's needed.

You're going to need to pick up some more parts elsewhere.

Exit to the overhead Alcatraz map, and go to the Chapel.

CHAPEL
Use PROJECTOR BULB with Projector to fix it.
Adjust the speaker and get a WHEEL RIM.

Talk to the Chaplain. Ignore what he says about your wife.
If the Chaplain faces away from the desk, you can steal something from the desk drawer. You'll get a TIJUANA BIBLE (hand-drawn porn).
Examine the TIJUANA BIBLE.
(optional) Talk to Hank.
Get EIGHT FEET OF ROPE from HANK in exchange for the TIJUANA BIBLE.

Get a BIRD EGG from the far left window.

Exit to the overhead Alcatraz map, and go to INDUSTRIES.

SHOP
Grab the OIL CAN from the tool table.
Pick up MECHANICS MAGAZINE below the bench to the left.
(optional) Talk to Bumpy.
Examine his broken (or more likely, sabotaged) machine. You need to improvise a thin fanbelt.
Combine OILCAN with SHOELACE to create OILY SHOELACE.
Use OILY SHOELACE with BUMPY'S machine.
(optional) Examine the machine again. There's still a loose cog.
Tighten the loose cog with your WRENCH. That fixed it.

If you have the WOOD BRUSH in your inventory, and the two GEARS from the generator as size references, you can apply the WOOD BRUSH to Bumpy's machine and carve a WOODEN GEAR at the perfect size.

Go back to the power room.

POWER ROOM
Put the new WOODEN GEAR into gear box.
In your inventory, combine WHEEL CENTER with WHEEL RIM to create WHEEL.
Use WHEEL with gear box.
Use FAN BELT with gear box.
Use the control panel to start the generator. It worked!
MASON will be impressed and take you Building 64, where he lives with his wife.

QUARTER'S DAY
Mason's wife is not happy that he brought home a convict. Listen to an awkward conversation.

You've got a lot of work to do here, but let's leave Alcatraz for a bit and enjoy the night life of San Francisco.

Check in with Christine. Has she found that loot?
Christine Pt3, Bookstore to Blackmail
1954: Alcatraz

Christine's Adventure, Part 3

Maybe it's the same night. Maybe it's the next. It's hard to tell in North Beach.

Let's chase down that key that was supposedly with Sutter, the poet at the Café.

BEAT CAFE
Try to talk to Sutter. He needs something to pep him up.
Give VALO to SUTTER.
He is still worn out, because of a quarrel with his partner MATTY. Matty is probably sulking in WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK. You'll have to reunite these two lovebirds.

Ask Sutter for material for your poetry magazine, and he'll hand you a LOVE POEM.

WASHINGTON SQUARE
Talk to Matty, on the bench. He's afraid of Grassi, who's watching from nearby.
Talk to Grassi to convince him to leave.

(optional) Give the LUCKY LAGER to the park bum, then talk with him to get info on Joe's heist. Talk with him again to put together some clues.

Resume your chat with Matty. Ask, "What's wrong with you and Sutter?"

Give MATTY the LOVE POEM to convince him to get back together with SUTTER.
It's not enough.

Tell Matty, "Don't think about what's next. You gotta make it NOW."
He doesn't buy it. End the conversation.

You'll need another symbol of love to fully persuade Matty.

Give him the ROSE, with an improvised Beat poem. Matty exits.

Follow Matty to the Café.

BEAT CAFE
(optional) Talk to Dale.

Sutter is happy again. Talk to him.
He got a DIARY from Joe, but he sold it to the Lower Depths bookstore because he was broke.
The BOOKSTORE is now unlocked on the map

We could go to the bookstore now, but we won't be able to get the Diary unless we have something to trade. So let's explore more of North Beach.

Go to the Church, or get into the Grant Avenue apartment to steal something tradeable.

CHURCH
The Church is closed
If Detective GRASSI is here, get him to walk away.
Lockpick the Church gate using a BOBBY PIN .
Enter the Church.
Confess some sins to the CHAPLAIN. Learn everything you can about his work on Alcatraz.

After confession, steal a gilded BIBLE on the right.

Leave the CHAPLAIN, for now.

BOOKSTORE
Give the BIBLE to the BOOKKEEPERESS to receive store credit and then buy the QUAKE diary.
Christine will find the S-KEY in the book and then return to the Café to tell Sutter she retrieved the book.

BEAT CAFE
Bernadette should be in the Café by now. Talk with her. She thinks she might have your third key. Go with her to her studio.

ARTIST STUDIO
Talk to BERNADETTE while posing for a painting. You can chat as much as you want. Ask her about the gallery she interested in.

Search her studio for the KEY.
Pick up the FLYER on the cot and talk about it with BERNADETTE
Bernadette says she might have lost the key when she brought a painting to the gallery.
Exit to the street.

GALLERY
Talk to GALLERY OWNER until he accepts BERNADETTE into his exhibition
You get the B-Key, which was stuck to Bernadette's painting.
Leave the gallery. You have all three keys!

Unfortunately, MICKEY and his THUG intercept you. There's no way to avoid them, they're shadowing you through the city.

They won't let you go unless you hand Mickey the B-Key. (He doesn't know there are three keys!)

Don't give up. You can follow up on that Grant Avenue apartment, or deal with Mickey at his club.

Let's investigate the apartment, first. Let Mickey think he won this round.

GRANT AVENUE
Christine runs into DALE, who will accompany her, no matter what.
In the hallway, click on the door – and watch out!
Christine says that maybe she can try to get in using the fire escape.

(optional) Talk to Dale and lie about your plans.

Exit to the street.

APARTMENT
Go back to your apartment. Climb out onto the fire escape.

FIRE ESCAPE
Go up to the roof.

ROOFTOP
Cross over the alley to your neighbor's roof by walking over the shaky wooden bridge.

AUTHOR'S APARTMENT
Upon first entering, the AUTHOR threatens you with a gun and you have to prove that you are a Beat. Tell the tale of how you and JOE met. After you've solved this initial riddle, you can move around freely.

You can steal part of the author's manuscript from the pile of papers, or pick up VOLUME IX from the lower bookshelf.

When you try to open the fridge, the author threatens to shoot you if you don't have the right pass phrase. Joe told him to ask for it.

To get the pass phrase from Joe, you need someone who travels back and forth between San Francisco and Alcatraz. Maybe the CHAPLAIN can help? He works on Alcatraz by day.

Leave through the door.

CHURCH
Ask the CHAPLAIN to get the information from JOE. The CHAPLAIN declines, as it's against the rules .

Well, we still have to get that third key back from Mickey. Maybe we can work on the Chaplain later.

NIGHTCLUB MAIN FLOOR
Talk to Bee. She knows what goes on here.

NIGHTCLUB LADIES' ROOM
Ask what you can do to get even with Mickey. Bee will whisper you his SAFE COMBINATION.
(optional) You can ask Bee if she had an affair with your husband. This may affect the strength of your marriage.
(optional) Ask Bee to take care of your cat when you're gone.
(optional) Ask Bee and Mickey and Goldie the Mermaid.

NIGHTCLUB MAIN FLOOR
Talk to MICKEY and get him to let you into his office..

NIGHTCLUB OFFICE
Talk to Mickey if you want.
Look around Mickey's office. Examine three different objects connected to his phobia. Make sure you examine them, not just interact with them.
Talk to Mickey and pretend you're kinda woozy.

Try the SAFE COMBINATION on the safe behind the desk. Unfortunately it doesn't work. But it appears to be a woman's measurements. And Mickey is obsessed with mermaids...

Leave the office and head to the dressing room.

NIGHTCLUB DRESSING ROOM
Use the SAFE COMBINATION on Goldie the MERMAID to get the CORRECT SAFE COMBINATION.

(optional) Chat with Goldie the Mermaid about Alcatraz, and sailing.
(optional) Ask Goldie if she'll take care of your cat.

NIGHTCLUB MAIN FLOOR
Talk Mickey into letting you upstairs again.

NOTE: In some playthroughs, Mickey may not let you back in his office because he's cleaning it. If this happens, please continue with other puzzles and try again later.

NIGHTCLUB OFFICE
Make Mickey fall for the same gag -- but you should probably use a different excuse.

Use the combo on the safe and take the contents:
Get the B-KEY back.
Get the MERMAID'S CONTRACT.
Get Mickey's SECRET LEDGER out of the safe.
Get a mysterious NEGATIVE out of the safe.
Get a GUN out of the safe, but don't use it yet. Grassi is always tailing you and it won't help Joe if you're arrested.

OPTIONAL: use SECRET LEDGER with the papers on the office desk to get LEDGERS COMBINED
It proves that Mickey is embezzling from the Mob. Use LEDGERS COMBINED with Mickey's red telephone to call a MAFIA LAWYER.
This will get MICKEY in trouble. And that changes who you'll see at the end of the adventure.
You'll also have to warn Bee and Goldie the Mermaid.

NIGHTCLUB MAIN FLOOR
Talk to Bee again.

NIGHTCLUB DRESSING ROOM
Ask BEE to develop the NEGATIVES from Mickey's safe.
Receive a BLACKMAIL PHOTO of the CHAPLAIN.

CHURCH
Show the BLACKMAIL PHOTO to the CHAPLAIN. Talk to him discreetly in the confessional. Then, confront him again and ask him to get info from Joe.

Leave the church. It may take a while before the Chaplain gets the pass phrase.

APARTMENT
You can relax. It's been a long night.

Let's switch to Joe and make sure the Chaplain cooperates.
Joe's Pt4, Building 64 to the Hospital
1954: Alcatraz

Joe's Adventure, Part 4

QUARTER'S DAY
Adjust the record player. You will automatically pick up Mrs. Mason's FASHION MAGAZINE from underneath the record player.

The TV is more complicated. Talk to MASON and receive the TV MANUAL. Try not to get too entangled with MRS. MASON.
Use TV MANUAL on the TV. You'll realize you need a specific tube.
Talk to MASON. He bought a bunch but he doesn't know which one to use. He'll give you TUBE A, TUBE B and WIRE A.
Use TUBE A or TUBE B with TV MANUAL to determine which is the correct one.
Use the correct tube with the TV. It works, but it's still snowy.
Receive TIN FOIL from MRS. MASON.
Use TIN FOIL with TV to boost the antenna.
TV is fully functional. You'll keep a PIECE OF TIN FOIL.
After fixing the TV and the record player, MASON will lead you outside to fix the public phone.

PHONE (DAY)
Examine the phone.
It never should've been installed so close to that power box.
Open the power box and replace a corroded wire with your WIRE A.
Apply TIN FOIL to the phone handset to further shield it from the power junction.
Pick up PHONE PART A.
MASON will lead you back to the map as soon as the phone is fixed.

LAUNDRY
Give FASHION MAGAZINE to CHIQUITA.

CHAPEL
Talk to the Chaplain. The blackmail worked. He asks you for the pass phrase.
Give him your LIBRARY CARD and tell him to show it to Christine.

POWER ROOM
You are now ready to fight Gas Pipe and get that car jack and earn a nice long stay in the hospital.

Go between the boilers to trigger the fight.

During the fight, move your mouse and Gas Pipe will counter. Be fast and click on vulnerable areas.

When your shiv breaks, you can only use your fists.

HOSPITAL OPERATING ROOM
JOE wakes up on the operating table, with the DOCTOR and MASON present.
Talk to the DOCTOR. He's in a hurry to get you out of the hospital.

Remind the Doctor that he swore an oath. Admit to killing people in your past. Talk about your Army heritage and your Italian (or Italian-American) wives. Ask to stay in a hospital wardroom.

You get a job as the Doctor's personal repairman.

Repair a few things to look busy, like the radiator and the wall phone. Try to find the car jack.

You won't be able to steal things with the Doc watching.

Work on the anesthesia tanks and get the temporary inventory item of SLEEPING GAS. Use it immediately on the DOCTOR to knock him out.

But before you can loot the room, MASON comes in. He takes you to an isolation ward, where you'll stay until the doctor can wake up and officially release you from the hospital.

ISOLATION WARD
(optional) Use the sink.

This may be a while. Let's check in with Christine.

CHURCH
If all goes well, Christine gets the BOOK CARD and the pass phrase from the Chaplain.

Examine Joe's note in your inventory. Learn the pass phrase. Also note that Joe wants you to get false passports from your landlady VIV.

BOOKSTORE
Trade in VOLUME IX or the Author's writing for store credit.
Give the BOOK CARD to the BOOKKEEPERESS and she'll point you to the rare book section to the right.
Get STROUD'S BIRD BOOK.

CHURCH
Give that BIRD BOOK to the CHAPLAIN to smuggle to Joe.

Leave the Church.

LANDLADY'S APARTMENT
Give your favorite jazz RECORD to VIVIAN as payment for your rent. Now Vivian is more likely to help you.
Talk to Vivian and ask her to forge passports for you and Joe.
She says she needs special ink for the forgery.

CAFE
Get INK from Bernadette at the Café. She's an artist, she always has art supplies.

LANDLADY'S APARTMENT
Give INK to VIVIAN.
Give BLANK PASSPORTS to Vivian. She'll tell you to get them from a drawer on the right side of the screen.
Give PHOTOS OF JOE AND CHRISTINE to VIVIAN, which you stole earlier from Grassi's files.
Receive FAKE PASSPORTS.

You're almost done.

AUTHOR'S APARTMENT
Go and try to open the fridge.
Tell the Author the correct pass phrase.
Open the fridge. It contains a safe, rigged with explosives.
Use the three KEYS with the safe.
You got the loot!

Now it's up to Joe. Can he actually escape from Alcatraz? And how will he signal you when he goes?

Joe's Adventure, Part 5

Time has passed. Days are all alike in the hospital.

Did Christine get that book to the Chaplain?

ISOLATION WARD
Press the panic button on the right-side wall. Pretend to by dying and ask to visit the Chapel.

CHAPEL
Get the BIRD BOOK from the CHAPLAIN. The blackmail worked.
(optional) Talk to Chaplain and ask him if Christine got the note.
Talk to MASON and return to your isolation ward.

ISOLATION WARD
Work a NAIL free from the windowsill.
Use BENT NAIL on your door lock to break out of your cell.
Slip out into the corridor.

CORRIDOR
Go to the right, to the wardroom of Robert "Birdman" Stroud. That's where you'll start your escape.

BIRDMAN'S WARDROOM
(optional) Talk to Birdman.
Give BIRD EGG to BIRDMAN.
Give BIRD BOOK to BIRDMAN. He is slightly more friendly.
(optional) Talk more to Birdman.
Lockpick his door with the BENT NAIL. Now you can get to the loose window.

While Birdman's back is to you, steal the SHEETS from his bed to make more rope.

Touch the window. You need a tool to open the gap.

HOSPITAL CORRIDOR
Go to the far left door, to the Operating Room.

OPERATING ROOM
If the DOCTOR is asleep, JOE can steal the CAR JACK. You must take the rolling CHAIR and swap it with the Car Jack.

In your inventory, combine the CAR JACK with the CAR JACK HANDLE to fix it.

Take a BLOODY SHIRT out of the trash. Could be handy.

CORRIDOR
Go to the "Small Hospital Room", the second door to the right.

SUPPLY ROOM
(optional) Open the First Aid box. Take the bottle of CLEANING FLUID.
(optional) Take the bottle of MURIATIC ACID from on top of a box.
Pick up a PHONE PART from the electrical box.
Pick up TOWELS, which you can use as rope.

In your inventory, combine all your rope to make 32 FEET OF ROPE.
In your inventory, combine your TK421 part with the other phone part to create a PHONE FEEDBACK DEVICE.
(optional) Combine CLEANING FLUID with MURIATIC ACID to make a smoke bomb.

BIRDMAN'S WARDROOM
Use the CAR JACK on the window. Joe will stop himself and remember The Lizard's plan. You need to place a fake body in your bed. It will buy you a few hours.

HOSPITAL CORRIDOR
Pick up a TRASH BAG.
Go back to your wardroom, the second door to the left.

ISOLATION WARD
In your inventory, combine BLOODY SHIRT with GARBAGE BAG to create a dummy.
Use DUMMY on bed.

Ok. This is it.

BIRDMAN 'S WARDROOM
Leave by using the CAR JACK with the window.

ROOFTOP NIGHT
(optional) Examine the tower and the guard.

Two options to distract the tower guard:
Option 1) Apply your PHONE FEEDBACK DEVICE to the phone line on the roof.
Option 2) Throw your SMOKE SCREEN at the tower guard.

Climb down to the right when the guard is distracted.

DUNGEON ENTRANCE
Touch the rusty locked door.

RUBBLE TUNNEL
Touch the pipes to the right of the rubble wall.
Grab the WOODEN PLANK on the ground and immediately apply it to the pipes.

Turn the VALVE.

Go out the far end of the tunnel.

Joe scales the big fence and climbs down a cliff to the cave.

CAVE
You aren't alone. Gas Pipe followed you from the hospital. Now it's you or him, only one of you is getting away.

You have to kill Gas Pipe with the rock. There's no other choice.

You search his body and get his signature GAS PIPE.

You're hurt pretty badly. You need help from Christine.

Go back up your rope to the cliff.

RUBBLE TUNNEL
Looks like the dripping water has revealed Loose Brickwork to the right.

Use the GAS PIPE to smash through the wall.

AIR RAID SHELTER
Take the DUCK TAPE from the shelf to the left.

Apply the DUCK TAPE to the BROKEN LADDER.

Apply the GASPIPE to the LADDER to lock it all into place.

Climb.

PATHWAY (NIGHT)
(optional) Kill Mason by throwing him off the cliff. Or don't. It's up to you.

Move on to the phone booth, down the stairs.

PHONE (NIGHT)
Do not get rattled by Mrs. Mason.

You need to open the CONTROL BOX to the left of the phone booth.

Use your WEDDING RING or a DIME on the CONTROL BOX to bridge the connection. (You may have the dime in your inventory, depending on previous choices.)

Use the phone to call Christine. Hope she's at home.
Christine Pt5, Wild Party to the End
1954: Alcatraz

Christine's Adventure, Part 5

APARTMENT
Christine is in the middle of a Beat party.
(optional) Check in with your guests and see how things worked out for them.

Answer the phone. It's Joe. You improvise a plan.

You need a boat.

Look inside the Mermaid's purse that's hanging from your dresser. There's a boat key.

Give GOLDIE'S CONTRACT to Goldie the MERMAID.

Take the boat key from Goldie's purse.

(optional) Convince Bernadette to take care of your cat.
(optional) Look at the things in your apartment for the last time.

Leave, forever.

We switch to Joe's point-of-view briefly:

PATHWAY (NIGHT)
One more chance to kill Mason.

Stumble down to the Old Shelter and back to the cave.

CAVE
This may be your last chance to save the game.

Swim out into OPEN WATER.

We switch to Christine:

PIER (NIGHT)
Confront whatever enemies are still alive. This may be different depending on your choices.

Talk them into pointing guns at each other. Appeal to Grassi's honor. Talk GRASSI into shooting THUG. In some situations you can trigger a gunfight by kicking over the trash can.

Afterward, talk your way out of an arrest, if Grassi survived. There are several variations to this scene.

Use the BOAT KEY on the boat. You'll take your suitcase full of loot.

BUOY
Before you pull Joe into the boat, you should settle a few things.

Depending on the state of your marriage -- whether Joe lied, whether either of you had sex with other people, etc -- the dialog and options may vary.

In some situations, you can also choose Joe's answers.

In the end, it's up to you. Leave Joe to die, or save him?

Was this a romance, or a bitter noir adventure?

Kiss him...or kill him?

This is really helpful, thank you for the guide!
The one thing i got stuck on (so far) and came here for was getting the radio.
I'd worked out that i needed to give him the manuscript and sheet music by finally breaking down to the old standby of trying to combine everything with everything on everything. This guide wasn't complete in the area but it helped me figure out what i was doing wrong.

I kept clicking on the head-dress that had the radio behind it and it finally dawned on me that despite most of the game having large hitboxes, the radio was a much smaller one and you had to click on /it/ before speaking to Xiaowen again and then giving him what he wants.

Wow this game did have a great ending, i just decided fuck it so killed him and left alone. Where the song has been the theme of the story all along. Also you missed a pretty important optional action give the wedding ring to chica or whateber the girls name is and she will give you a blowjob this will affect the diiiialogue choice in the end.

You should edit "Christine Pt3" where you examine 3 items to get Mickey out of the office. Add "right-click to examine". You never use right click at all in this game until this part. I see below someone got stuck there. Including me until I right click the 3 items.
