Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa, born as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun and the founder of the Missionaries of Charity. She was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire. At the age of 18, she moved to Ireland and later to India, where she lived most of her life.

She founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation that manages homes for people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis, and also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children’s and family counselling programs, as well as orphanages and schools. The congregation grew to have over 4,500 nuns across 133 countries as of 2012.

Mother Teresa received several honours, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. She was canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta on September 4, 20161. The anniversary of her death, September 5, is her feast day.

Despite her many achievements, Mother Teresa was a controversial figure during her life and after her death. She was admired by many for her charitable work.

Mother Teresa died of heart failure. She had suffered a heart attack in 1983, during a trip to Rome. After a battle with pneumonia and malaria, she resigned as head of the Missionaries of Charity. She died at the age of 87 at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. Her death was on September 5, 1997.
