Intro.
Greetings adventurers! It's off to the continent of Allansia again this time, for a classic FF forest adventure. There will be no assistance from the constellations this far from the Old World, so there's gonna be plenty (well, a bit) of swordplay required here.

The fabled hammer of King Gillibran III has been stolen from the dwarves of Stonebridge and taken into the sinister Darkwood Forest. Without it Stonebridge cannot hope to fight off the hill trolls who are preparing an attack. Somebody must brave the dangers of Darkwood Forest and retrieve the hammer before it is too late!
This sounds like another perfect mission for the Analand Sorceress....
Stats.
As you would expect from an Ian Livingstone title this game is potentially combat-heavy, altho if you follow the optimum walkthru it is actually remarkably easy. You begin with 30 g.p. which enables you to purchase several useful artefacts at the start, plus you still get some provisions and the traditional potion-of-your-choice.

In Adventurer mode this is a simple quest.
Even in Hardcore Hero mode it should still be fairly straightforward, unless your starting stats are absolutely appalling.

There are 31 Steam achievements for this game. Some of them are completed during the winning walkthru and are marked in bold type where they occur. The remainder require different choices and are described in a separate chapter later in this guide.

To complete the main walkthru buy the following items:
Glove Of Missile Dexterity, Armband Of Strength, Garlic Buds, Holy Water & Potion Of Healing.
(A Potion Of Healing is the same as one provision and is used in the same way.)

To complete the Steam achievements and collect all of the artworks, also buy these items:
Net Of Entanglement, Headband Of Concentration, Ring Of Light, Rope Of Climbing, Boots Of Leaping, Potion Of Plant Control.

There are 31 Steam achievements for this game.
Some can be completed during the winning walkthru, described above, and are marked in bold type where they occur. The remaining achievements are unlocked as follows:

Lucky Luke: Pass a luck test.
Unlucky Barman Fail a luck test.
Sell Out: Purchase each of Yaztromo's items at least once, over several plays thru.

Flukey Fluting: When you enter Darkwood Forest go east, then go north, but meet the owners of the voices. Defeat two hobgoblins: Sk 6 St 6 & Sk 5 St 7 (+ brass flute) Then follow the walkthru until you have collected the second hammer piece, but when you see something glittering investigate it. Take a luck test. (fail -4 sta) You have the brass flute.

Cover Star: When you enter Darkwood Forest, go west instead of east. Then continue westwards, ignore the cries, then try to start a conversation with the goblin. Fight the shape changer: Sk 10 St 10
Ungrateful Dead: When you enter Darkwood Forest, go west instead of east. Then continue westwards and go to the aid of the person. Free him. (-all gold) Ignore the goblin, then go east. (-1 sta) Defeat the tree man: Sk 8 St 8 & Sk 8 St 8. Continue north, then continue north again. See what the vultures are interested in. Cut him free. Defeat barbarian: Sk 9 St 7

Mr. Kessler: Follow the walkthru until you have gained the dust of levitation, but when you return to the junction go north instead of east. Then walk down the steps, walk thru the sheet of water and defeat the fish man: Sk 7 St 6. Continue and defeat the werewolf: Sk 8 St 9, but you must lose at least one attack round. You don't have the belladonna.
Leaping Lord: Continue from the previous achievement, then continue north. Take a luck test. (pass -2 sta, fail -4 sta) You have the boots of leaping.

Gone Pear-Shaped: When you enter Darkwood Forest go east, but then go east again. Eat some fruit.
Hulla Baloo: Continue from the previous achievement, then spit out the fruit. Ignore the voices. See what creature is growling.
Confused Hippophile: Continue from the previous achievement and defeat the bear: Sk 7 St 8. Then continue north. You have a potion of plant control. Talk to the centaur and pay him 3 g.p.
Back Of The Net: Continue from the previous achievement, then defeat a giant spider: Sk 7 St 8. Go east. Enter the cave and use the net of entanglement. (+ brass bell)
Happy Tuck: Continue from the previous achievement, then at the next junction continue north. Start a conversation with him. You have the brass bell.

Meddling Kids: Continue from the achievement "Back Of The Net", then at the next junction go west. Go north (-3 sta) then head west. Enter the hut. You are not wearing the eye of amber. Attack him.

Deagle Deagle Deagle: Continue from the achievement "Back Of The Net", then at the next junction go west. Continue west, then continue west again. Investigate the well. Descend the ladder . Luck test. (fail: -2 sta) Crawl along the tunnel, then go west. Go north. Luck test. (fail: -4 sta)
Enter the cave and defeat the two gremlins (-3 a.s.): Sk 4 St 3 & Sk 3 St 2.

Eggsplode: Follow the walkthru until you have passed the vine to the tree house, but then continue north. Take a luck test (lose all your gold if you fail) then defeat 3 killer bee swarms: Sk 7 St 3, Sk 8 St 4 & Sk 7 St 4. Cross the bridge. Defeat 3 wolves: Sk 7 St 7, Sk 8 St 7. Sk 7 St 9, then enter the hut. Open the chest. Lift the chest and smash it. You must now pass a skill test. (Fail: -1 sta, then retake skill test) Then -1d6 sta

Demon Lord: Follow the walkthru until you defeat the wild hill men then go west at the junction, but at the next junction go north instead of continuing west.
Then, rub some hot mud onto your wounds. +4 sta
Fight pterodactyl: Sk 7 St 8
Follow the arrow. You have a ring of light. You have a rope of climbing.
Climb down the rope. Eat a green-topped fungus. +4 sta
Look inside the barrel. Take the shield. + emperor's shield, +1 luck
Open chest. +8 g.p., +1 luck
Leave the alcove. Continue climbing.
(The next battle is potentially tough as it has an extra attack. Use provisions, potion of healing & potion of fortune before fighting, if required, to increase your stamina/luck. If your luck score is good, use luck tests to try to defeat it in fewer attack rounds.)
Defeat fire demon: Sk 10 St 10 then put on the crown.

What's Up Doc: Follow the walkthru until you reach the gnome sitting on the rock, but give him a gentle push. Then attack him and throw the carrot at him.

Earth Wind: Follow the walkthru until you have ignored the gnome on the rock, then investigate the hut. Drop the vase. (-2 sta) You don't have a potion of stillness. (-3 luck)

Pfeiffer Berry: Continue from the previous achievement, then at the next junction go east. Defeat catwoman: Sk 8 St 5

MacLean's Aim: (Be fired upon by arrows in four different encounters.)
1: Follow the walkthru until you have passed the vine to the tree house, but then continue north.
2: Follow the walkthru until you encounter the wild hill men.
3: When you enter Darkwood Forest go east, but then go east again. Ignore the fruit.
Ignore the voices. Ignore the creature and continue north. You have a potion of plant control. Attack the centaur.
4: Follow the instructions for #3 above, but talk to the centaur, then pay him 3g.p. Defeat a giant spider: Sk 7 St 8. Continue north, then go west. Continue west. Investigate the well. Descend the ladder . Luck test. (fail: -2 sta) Crawl along the tunnel, then go west. Go north. Luck test. (fail: -4 sta)

Hide in the bushes. Then walk down the hole, carry on down the hole.
Artwork #12: Follow the walkthru until you have collected the hammer-handle, but then after taking the luck test, climb up the vine to the tree house.
Artwork #10: Follow the walkthru until you encounter the fox. Face the oncoming pack of dogs.
Artwork #17: Follow the walkthru until you have passed the vine to the tree house, but then continue north. Artwork #24: Continue on from Artwork#17, then leave the room. Ignore the boulder. At the 3-way junction go west. Take a look at the well, then descend. Luck test. pass: ok, fail -2 sta. Then crawl along the tunnel. Crawl west. Crawl north. Luck test. pass ok, fail -4 sta. Then still enter the cave.

Artwork #22: Follow the walkthru until you have defeated the hill men. Go west, but at the next junction go north. Rub some hot mud onto your wounds. (+4 sta)
Defeat pterodactyl: Sk 7 St 8, then follow the arrow.

Alternative cover-art. This is completed by finding four separate pieces at hidden locations:
1: When you enter Darkwood Forest, go west instead of east. Then turn north and look thru the window of the hut. Enter the hut and draw your sword. You have the headband of concentration. Take a luck test (- all provisions if you fail) then search the hut.
2: Follow the walkthru until you pass the gnome sitting on the rock. Investigate the hut, put your hand inside the vase. Feel around.
3: Continue from above. Leave the hut. Go east. Run on. (-1 luck) Attack the dwarf: Sk 8 St 5.
4: When you enter Darkwood Forest go east, but then ignore the crow and continue east. Ignore the fruit and continue. Ignore the voices, then ignore the creature. Continue north. (-3 sta) Talk to the centaur and pay him 3 g.p. for help. Defeat a giant spider: Sk 7 St 8, then go east. Enter the cave and use the net of entanglement. (You examine your find on the next page.)
