  • First summoning – What's this? Oh, Melody! My sweet granddaughter. You remembered the song! You had an ear for music, unlike your older sister [Tabitha]. You seem to be more awake than usual... As you can see, the house has been falling apart. [Old Like its core is rotting away... It's gotten so dark and cold.] Like time has finally caught up with it. And it's so dark and cold... Here, Melody, I want you to have this. It should help light your way around this old house. I'll be around if you ever need to chat, okay?
  • Second – Oh, Melody! So nice to see you again. You've gotten so good at playing out song! But, you don't have to play it every time you want to see me. You can find me in the west wing of the house. We start to materialize as the night grows darker... Stay safe, sweetie.
  • Later, on the toilet/crate – Here you go, Melody.
  • After Candle get – I'm sorry about your parents, dear. The house has been devouring them for so long... James always was a stubborn boy, though. I'm sure a piece of him is still in there.

How are you feeling tonight? I've always loved this old house. Your grandfather never liked this place though. I think spending eternity here made him a little stir-crazy. • Reading – What is it, dear? / Hey, sweetie. / Let's talk more later, I'm at a dramatic part.

  • Garden – I always loved it here. Do you remember? Before the house. Before everything. Just me and you together in the garden. But now it's just an old memory. A fading reflection.
Narration
  • "Father" – You fall to your knees, exhausted. Father is dead. His head rolls over and his glossy eyes shift at you. Just a twitch once and no more. The darkness retreats, but somewhere distant a fleshy heartbeat continues...
  • "Bloodshed" – Blood pools in doorways & seeps into the carpet. Splatter covers the walls. It drips from your fingertips. Your father grins madly and embraces you. The darkness swallows you both, leaving nothing behind.
  • "The Song" – Your sister's song fills the House. The dark burns away as the sound echoes throughout. Deep shadows retreat from your father's eyes. The curse lifts...but at what cost?
  • "Family" – It did not seem possible. The day stretched on and the darkness grew bold. The curse on your house insurmountable. But now, the house is still. The endless gnawing dread replaced with a warm meal and you return to your old, familiar life...
Très Dialogue
Neighbor

  • Melodoll – Thinking about your sister? Truly a shame what happened. You know, I've been thinking-- Perhaps it's not too late. For your sister, at least. • Second meeting – Sup, kid? Do I know you? You seem familiar...
  • Glass of Toilet – At long last, something to sip on. Thanks, kid. [OR] A bit late with the water. Don't expect a big tip. [Both] Bleh! What was that, sewer water?
  • Post-Vomit – Ugh, I feel sick. / At least that key is out. It was scratching my throat. / Alright, shoo kid. Rats gotta go back to eatin'.
  • Glass of Floor Wine – Does my nose deceive me, or is that a 1985 cabernet? Ah, what a treat. I haven't had such a fine wine in some time. It's always just sandwiches... So many sandwiches. Gimme that journal of yours, I wanna scribble something.

The Story (major guesswork & spoilers)
Major Timeline
  • The house falls under a curse, likely put in place by Staffer, in order to trap souls within.
  • The Neighbor watches at least two other families (or possibly Tabby's ancestors?) try and stop the curse, the last of which leaves behind the Ducky (Fridgette, Lisa, Small Shade); these families were some time ago, as Grandma originally lived in the house as well and an immature faceless shadow owned the duck.
  • Tabby's grandfather dies and is thusly ensnared, eventually becoming the old man playing with puppet strings (Neighbor, "Memories").
  • Tabby is born sometime before Melody (Grandma).
  • Tabby's family moves into the eponymous House ("Moving Day"), possibly after Grandma dies and it's inherited.
  • James becomes possessed, a Demon inhabits the Toilet, something similar infests the Fridge, a messenger attached to the House embodies the Doll, one of the Basement Rats becomes very large, the Centipede worms into Tabby's room, and the family members become fodder for resurrection as horrible monsters (Mombie, Zimon, Hanging Melody).
  • James kills Toby (with the axe?).
  • Lisa hides the body, which leaves the slingshot and Toby's ghost tied to the sub-room long enough to attract flies, spread the scent of decomposition, and become a monster candidate (Tomby).
  • Melody falls into a deep, suicidal depression, only comforted by her piano ("I hate what he did", "I hate what I saw", "I hate that axe" – Melody).
  • Marty comes for the smelly body and stays for Melody's playing.
  • Tabby breaks the curse, with or without Marty, and loses her arm in the process ("Memories"). She then undergoes nightmares of her time under the curse (possibly as a result of PTSD).
  • Months later, Tabby sacrifices herself to the Neighbor, who wraps Tabby up in her neck like a snake and appears to bite Tabby's head off; this Awakens Melody.
  • Melody frees herself and the spirits of the family and winds up looping alongside Tabby.
Unclear
  • Lisa develops a drinking problem due to marital issues such as James bowling instead of spending time with her.
  • Marty recognizes the Seamstress, but doesn't elaborate – snails can live up to 50 years and he's also intelligent with the ability to enhance human stamina, so who knows?
  • The Neighbor appears to be on the same level as Staffer (they both have a TV room viewing the house).
Older Gamejolt Version
I'm having to pull this secondhand from ManlyBadassHero's video so pardon lack of deep dive. All of this is an earlier build, so obviously developer intent may have changed.

Dialogue
Dolly
  • Initial – "If only I had a friend. Will you find me a friend?"
  • Simon – "Oh, yes. I do love kitty cats. Here, take this. You might need it."
  • Killed James – "Well done, my friend. Now hold me."
Melody
  • Initial – "Oh thank heavens Father boarded me in here... I desperately need to use the bathroom."
Tabby
  • Dolly – "Just an ordinary doll."
Toilet Demon
  • Barfy – Ding dong, daddy's almost home. Too many people... Clear them out. Kill them all. Be a good girl now.

Timeline

Mechanics
  • Simon was a carry-able item that spawned in either the Hall near modern Bathroom, the Kitchen where Lisa would eventually be, or in the equivalent of his sleeping spot.
  • Shotgun acquired by bringing Simon to Dolly, and was pre-loaded with a single shot.
  • Bear Trap reusable.
  • Rug didn't move or disappear at midnight.

The old man... you mean the mask man with the staff? Toby's ghost appears in the bathroom, Melody's room, & Tabby's room at random in Melody's mode. If he doesn't appear with the lights turned off, then you may have a bug and need to verify your Steam files or similar troubleshooting.

Hello. I have a question. The old man killed Toby, and I cannot find his ghosts since that. Can somebody help me?
Thanks.

@string of numbers: Melody has dialogue for the axe, but not the bear trap.

@Persistent Thank you for informing me of the fridge demon, but there appears to be a glitch wherein she does not exit the fridge, so I will wait until I can verify for myself. If it's intended, then it's possible "Fridgette" is a previous mother , as Mombie appears to try to make Tabby into a sandwich when caught.

The fridge demon wants the rubber ducky: if you throw it on the ground, it will actually pick the ducky up while chasing you… I guess that monster was what became of the previous home owner.

I think Toby was killed by the bear trap and not the axe. Mom implies there was an accident with the bear trap ("Please be careful, honey. Wouldn't want another accident"). There is also the fact that Toby will always say "I d-don't think your father likes me very much" if you talk to him while holding the axe.
