Yeah if you just right click it will cycle through the 4 chains you have equipped, I don't recall if it's random though I think it's in a sequence.
You can change your equipped chain attacks in the character menu, the one where you see your other skills.
Just select the chain attack you want and assign it to one of the 4 keys you use to select specific chains.
Backstab is a manual skill yes, like any any spell etc.
The backstab stat will if I remember right, increase the damage of the backstab skill so if you want to use the skill a lot it's worth investing in this.
Backstab only works with specific weapons though, mostly daggers but some swords.
You could say that longer chains unlocks them faster but really it's about how often you use those chains.
I believe it's like a point system, lvl 1 chains give 1 point, lvl2 gives 2 and you need to meet a certain amount to unlock the next one.
1. What happens if you just right click instead of holding one of the chain-assigned buttons? Does it cycle through them, randomise, else?
2. How do you equip a new chain attack? I was reading a guide that says that Backstab is a manual ability. I see it in Flece's skill stats, but no button can be assigned to it. Are the Backstab stat and a Backstab skill two different things? Really confused here.
3. Are chains unlocked by longer unbroken chains, more frequent uses, both, else?
It's much faster if you do the other characters at the same time rather than maxing one then moving to the other.
The AP cost of chains will increase with the number of successful chains, so the longer the chain the faster you'll drain that character's AP.
Switching to another character and doing their chains as well is a good way of speeding the process up while the other character recharge.
My first guess would be the use of Added Blow since that doesn't contribute to any chain unlocks.
That could be why it seems infrequent sometimes if this chain is used often.
It could be that different chains have different unlock requirements too, but I don't know what the numbers would be for that.. I have looked but can't find that info online anywhere.
I've never had much trouble unlocking all the chains myself though, specially after learning out how the system works.
All I can really advise is to actively hunt for specific chains by the fastest method possible listed in the guide.
It's what I do to unlock them myself.
I wish the game was more popular in the cheater scene. :(
I'm pretty sure it's based on a point/exp system like a level 1 chain gives 1 point or something while level 2 gives 2 or more points and you need X amount of points to unlock the next chain.
I can't tell you what those requirements are though.. I don't know for sure and I can't find that info online either.
I could be something like 50-100 points for level 2 chains and another 200-300 for level 3's.
What I do know for sure though is using the level 1 and level 2 chains in the same line is the fastest method of unlocking the level 3 chain which I mentioned in the guide.
It doesn't take too long to unlock chains though if you are hunting for them.
There is an option in the game's Setup settings called Speed which determines the default detail level in the game and the Readme file does warn this can affect the gameplay speed as well so if you've changed that it could be why your game is running faster.
A last resort option would also be to try finding a mod somewhere online that possibly helps with your problem but i've not even looked into modding this game so I can't help you there.
Unfortunately this game is a bit outdated on modern PC's and problems like this are sadly to be expected.
I wish I could be more help but my technical knowledge about PC's and games is extremely limited i'm afraid.
I've had the game go into superspeed on me in the past which I think is the result of super high framerate the game just wasn't designed to handle.. I've had similar issues in other games as well when framerate exceeds certain limits.. not just oldie games either, some were fairly newish.
Playing with V-sync on may help with that.. or make it worse depending on your monitor's refresh rate.. i'm not sure what the max FR Summoner was designed to handle but I'd suspect 30 given the game's age and the fact it was a Ps2 title as well.. though it may be able to handle 60 on PC so V-Sync maybe a good thing to try turning on if you haven't already.
If you know how it maybe possible to force the game to run at a specific framerate in the game's files or with a command line or something but i'm not familiar with how to do that with this game, nor what command lines to use.
