Chain Attack Guide

A simple guide on how to use, equip and unlock the various Chain Attacks in Summoner.

(This is a slightly edited copy of the guide I wrote in the discussion page years ago which I am reposing as a proper guide upon request)

Chain Attacks and how to use them.
Chain Attacks are basically combo skills that allow you to attack continuously provided you have the required AP to use them and you time each attack correctly.

Chain Attacks are very useful to Summoner's combat system.
Using them will increase your overall damage output and some even give you access to specific damage types that can be far more effective against certain enemy types.
Some Chain Attacks will also provide buffs and healing to a character or even the whole party and some will inflict status effects on enemies.
Using Chain Attacks also locks the targeted enemy down so they can't attack you while the chain is successfully ongoing.
This can even be used to completely deny some enemies the ability to attack you during a whole fight.
They can take a little getting used to but they are a lot easier than they first appear.
So I strongly recommended you learn how to use these very useful abilities while you play through this fantastic RPG.

To use a Chain Attack all you need to to is right click when you see the small chain icon appear above your selected character while in combat.. (it will look like a sideways 8)

Summoner also gives you the option to manually select specific chains using CAPS, SHIFT, CTRL and ALT.
You can change your chain keybinds and select new chains when you unlock them in the Character menu.. they will be under your skills as you will notice when leveling up your characters.

To use a specific chain you need only press and hold CAPS, SHIFT, CTRL or ALT and then right click as usual when the chain icon appears.. it's that simple.
Manually selecting chains is also the fastest way to unlock specific chains as well.

It's important to note that only 4 Chain Attacks can be equipped at any time and those chains under CAPS, SHIFT, CTRL and ALT will be your currently equipped Chain Attacks.

It is also important to note that if you manually only equip 2 or 3 Chain Attacks instead of 4 then you will have to manually select those chains in combat as simply right clicking will not work when less than 4 chains are equipped.

Now that that's out of the way.. lets talk about unlocking new Chain Attacks..
Unlocking New Chain Attacks
As you regularly use Chain Attacks you'll notice popups saying so and so has unlocked Chain Attack etc etc.

These new chains can be equipped into your Chain Attack rotation the same way you manually change the keybinds in the level up menu.

When you start the game you are automatically given 4 Chain Attacks per character and with exception to Added Blow all other Chain Attacks unlock 2 new Chain Attacks each.
These Chain Attacks are separated by level, 1, 2 and 3 and the speed at which these new chains are unlocked depends on two things.. the specific level of the chain you are using and/or using both of the Chain Attacks in that same line.

Example: Desperation a level 1 chain unlocks Stamina Burst a level 2 chain, but both Desperation and Stamana Burst will unlock Silence a level 3 chain.

You can unlock Silence by only using Desperation or Stamina Burst.. but since Stamina Burst is a level 2 chain it will unlock Silence faster than just using Desperation.

However using both Desperation and Stamina Burst together is the fastest way of unlocking Silence, more so if you use CAPS, SHIFT, CTRL or ALT to use specifically use Desperation and Stamina Burst in in a constant combo spam.. this is by far the fastest method of unlocking a specific level 3 chain.

Right, with all that said and done I'll now go through each character and their specific Chain Attacks.
(Reminder, Added Blow has no second or third chain to unlock)

Hey @Grey

Yeah if you just right click it will cycle through the 4 chains you have equipped, I don't recall if it's random though I think it's in a sequence.

You can change your equipped chain attacks in the character menu, the one where you see your other skills.
Just select the chain attack you want and assign it to one of the 4 keys you use to select specific chains.

Backstab is a manual skill yes, like any any spell etc.
The backstab stat will if I remember right, increase the damage of the backstab skill so if you want to use the skill a lot it's worth investing in this.
Backstab only works with specific weapons though, mostly daggers but some swords.

You could say that longer chains unlocks them faster but really it's about how often you use those chains.
I believe it's like a point system, lvl 1 chains give 1 point, lvl2 gives 2 and you need to meet a certain amount to unlock the next one.

Thanks for the guide! Got some follow-up questions as I've been playing for a few hours and don't seem to have any new chains unlocked yet.

1. What happens if you just right click instead of holding one of the chain-assigned buttons? Does it cycle through them, randomise, else?

2. How do you equip a new chain attack? I was reading a guide that says that Backstab is a manual ability. I see it in Flece's skill stats, but no button can be assigned to it. Are the Backstab stat and a Backstab skill two different things? Really confused here.

3. Are chains unlocked by longer unbroken chains, more frequent uses, both, else?

Weapons and Character affect the speed a Lot,Joeslapps.

Oh and make use of character swapping to due the AP cost of chains.

It's much faster if you do the other characters at the same time rather than maxing one then moving to the other.

The AP cost of chains will increase with the number of successful chains, so the longer the chain the faster you'll drain that character's AP.
Switching to another character and doing their chains as well is a good way of speeding the process up while the other character recharge.

@5chneemensch I don't think there are any diminishing returns.. pretty sure there isn't.

My first guess would be the use of Added Blow since that doesn't contribute to any chain unlocks.
That could be why it seems infrequent sometimes if this chain is used often.

It could be that different chains have different unlock requirements too, but I don't know what the numbers would be for that.. I have looked but can't find that info online anywhere.
I've never had much trouble unlocking all the chains myself though, specially after learning out how the system works.

All I can really advise is to actively hunt for specific chains by the fastest method possible listed in the guide.
It's what I do to unlock them myself.

It's weird because they unlock so infrequently and inconsistently. Getting ~15 chain regularly and only unucking 2 out of 6 for Joseph in 2h is really weird. Maybe there are diminishing returns as well?

I wish the game was more popular in the cheater scene. :(
Teratus  [author] 23 Nov, 2022 @ 2:28am
@5chneemensch It's definitely not RNG to my knowledge.

I'm pretty sure it's based on a point/exp system like a level 1 chain gives 1 point or something while level 2 gives 2 or more points and you need X amount of points to unlock the next chain.

I can't tell you what those requirements are though.. I don't know for sure and I can't find that info online either.
I could be something like 50-100 points for level 2 chains and another 200-300 for level 3's.

What I do know for sure though is using the level 1 and level 2 chains in the same line is the fastest method of unlocking the level 3 chain which I mentioned in the guide.

It doesn't take too long to unlock chains though if you are hunting for them.
5chneemensch 22 Nov, 2022 @ 4:28pm
When are they unlocked? x times of uses? x times of *hits*? RNG?

@Joeslapps You could also try running the game in compatibility mode with an older version of windows but i've no idea if that would help or not.

There is an option in the game's Setup settings called Speed which determines the default detail level in the game and the Readme file does warn this can affect the gameplay speed as well so if you've changed that it could be why your game is running faster.

A last resort option would also be to try finding a mod somewhere online that possibly helps with your problem but i've not even looked into modding this game so I can't help you there.

Unfortunately this game is a bit outdated on modern PC's and problems like this are sadly to be expected.
I wish I could be more help but my technical knowledge about PC's and games is extremely limited i'm afraid.
Teratus  [author] 16 Nov, 2022 @ 11:25pm
@Joeslapps I'm not sure but that could have something to do with your framerate.

I've had the game go into superspeed on me in the past which I think is the result of super high framerate the game just wasn't designed to handle.. I've had similar issues in other games as well when framerate exceeds certain limits.. not just oldie games either, some were fairly newish.

Playing with V-sync on may help with that.. or make it worse depending on your monitor's refresh rate.. i'm not sure what the max FR Summoner was designed to handle but I'd suspect 30 given the game's age and the fact it was a Ps2 title as well.. though it may be able to handle 60 on PC so V-Sync maybe a good thing to try turning on if you haven't already.

If you know how it maybe possible to force the game to run at a specific framerate in the game's files or with a command line or something but i'm not familiar with how to do that with this game, nor what command lines to use.
