The idea is that the directions indicated on the map ("N" for North, "E" for East, etc.) correspond to the directions in which you proceed from the plates you see on the ground at intersections throughout the dungeon, not the direction in which you exit the screen.

So you might go east from a given plate/intersection, but exit the screen to the south because there's a turn in the hallway along the way. Likewise, if you pass through two intersections/plates, that counts as two steps along Mike's instructions, even if they're on the same screen.

At least, that's how it is in English. It could be that the translation was unclear, as you said.
