By Phobos
You're a old-school PANZER DIVISION MO-FO who played Resident Evil when he was six and can't stand anything more modern than a Dualshock 2 controller - this guide is for you.

Play Tormented Souls, the old-school, real and badass way:

Requirements
  • A Controller of your choice: USB or Bluetooth, as long as Steam recognize it.
  • Basic knowledges about Steam Controller Configurator.
  • Ideally, your controller already recognized by Steam and configured.

NOTE:
You don't know about the Steam Controller Configurator feature offered by Steam?
Read SECTION 1 below.

You're already familiar with this feature?
Skip this part and go to SECTION 2.

1 - Configure your Controller to use it on Steam
Follow these steps to configure your controller and use it with any game on Steam (Non-Steam Games too !)

  • First, click on Steam, up there on the left, then, Settings

  • Then, click on Controller, and General Controller Settings

The next windows will look like this.

On this screen, I've got my Nintendo Switch Pro controller connected, but also my Nintendo Gamecube gamepad (connected with the official NGC Adapter for Switch).Depending on your controller, you'll see, of course, different names for the connected gamepads.

- Switch Pro, Xbox and Playstation gamepads are natively supported by Steam, you will not have to define button layouts for these controllers if you select the corresponding option.

- If you're using a generic gamepad, you will have to define a new layout.
Let's take example with my Gamecube gamepad.

  • Click on Your Controller Name, then Define Layout.

You'll see your gamepad buttons and the associated commands in the next window.

  • Configure each button according to the one highlighted when you select a new command, easy to understand.

SAVE YOUR LAYOUT CONFIGURATION (ON THE BOTTOM) BEFORE EXITING THIS WINDOW !

After that, name your controller, define the deadzones if needed, then save your configuration.
2 - Change your controller layout for TORMENTED SOULS.
Tormented Souls is a great game and, especially, a love letter to the godfathers of Survival Horror: Resident Evil & Silent Hill.

These games used the commonly named Tank Controls configuration.
Loved by some, hated by others...

If you're reading this guide, you're probably fond of this specific configuration so that's no news for you.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing this guide, Tormented Souls doesn't offer the possibility to use said Tank Controls with your gamepad analog stick, only your D-PAD.

Analog Tank Controls was made popular with the DualShock Edition of Resident Evil on Playstation, and Resident Evil 2. Sequels used this model too, no matter which system you played the games on, Playstation, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64...

It's difficult to understand the decision of the team not to allow players to use Tank Controls with the analog stick, but anyway, here's how to make this a possibility, and it's quite easy, thanks to Steam Controller Settings.

  • Start Tormented Souls, then go to the Steam Overlay (Default shortcut is Shift+Tab)

  • Click on Controller Configuration upright.

The next window will show your controller and the configuration you defined for it.
You want to change the Analog Stick Left to act as Buttons, specifically, D-PAD buttons, like the picture below (wanted result).

  • To do so, click on your Analog Stick Left configuration.

  • Change the options on your window, to the settings below.
(SKIP THE MODE SHIFTING SETTING FOR NOW)
  • Then, on the D-PAD shown, click each direction, and click the corresponding direction of the gamepad shown in the next window.

Next window

Your Analog Stick will now act as a D-PAD with four directions.

Tank Controls are set !

Great, but wait... there's more.

Tormented Souls requires the use of the joystick basic configuration to check on items.

YOU CAN'T DO THIS WITH THE D-PAD.

So, what we're gonna do, is use LB (Left Shoulder Button), which is almost unused ingame except for menus, to act as a small trigger to toggle the basic configuration ingame, allowing you to check the items without problems, IF THE BUTTON IS PRESSED.

  • Go back to your Analog Stick Left configuration window, then, click on the field below Mode Shifting.

  • Change the options of the different fields like the screen below.

  • When this is done, go back to your controller main screen, then click on the LB (Left Shoulder Button) configuration.

The window below will appear.
  • Click on Show Activators.

  • Configure the options on your window like below.
3 - Play Tormented Souls with Tank Controls on Analog Stick Left !
If you carefully followed these instructions, you should now be able:

  • To play Tormented Souls with Tank Controls, with the Analog Stick Left
  • Check items with the Analog Stick Left, by pressing LB on your controller (keep that button pressed !)
  • Use modern controls for a brief time by pressing LB on your controller (once again, keep that button pressed ! This feature might be useful to avoid monsters on intricate corridors for example, if Tank Controls are too difficult for a specific section)

I can confirm all of these settings are working so please double-check the pictures and instructions if you can't achieve the same result.

And now, go on, take them down and make them bite the dust !

Gotta agree their update suck bad at this time, BUT:

There's a temporary workaround.

The old UI is still present, just not accessible.
It's simple to access it though, look on your main Steam window, up-right, where the tabs "Steam", "View", "Contacts", "Games", "Help" are located.

Put the cursor on "Steam" for example, and press Alt+Enter to access the old steam bigpicture UI.
From there, you'll be able to start the game and configure a controller profile juste like I did in my guide.

Hope this helps !
