1) COMPATIBILITY SETTINGS

Step by step Guide:

Find your Steam Root Directory (Default C:/Program Files/Steam/)
Find /SteamApps/common/Disciples II Galleans Return/
Right Click Discipl2.exe > Properties > Compatibility
Set Compatibility mode to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"
Set Reducet colour mode to "16-bit colour", apply both and close
Right Click ScenEdit.exe > Properties
Set Compatibility mode to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"
Apply and close, proceed to the next step

2) ConfigEditor.exe

Optimal settings in ConfigEditor.exe for smooth run
Different settings may be optimal for different PCs, you'll need to experiment with these yourself a little bit to find an optimal combination for your PC

Open ConfigEditor.exe in the game directory
Set Screen resolution to the highest possible (1280x1024)
Tick Display game in a window
Tick Compatibility mode
Untick Play intro when game starts
If the game still doesn't run optimaly, experiment with the remaining settings

3) Final Settings

This final step is required to prevent Steam from reverting the changes you've done

Go to your Steam Library
Right click Disciples II: Gallean's Return > Properties > Updates
Select Do not automaticly update this game
Save and enjoy the game!

this happen with 3rd party wrappers where you can set alternate resolution. Or you check ✔ 640x480 mode (turn that off). Also NEVER EVER set 1280x1024 today. And for most gamed it never was better in old days too. This game maximum is 1024x, 1280 is alternate 5:4 proportions for lowbudged office displays.

The guide worked with win 11, except I can not move the map to the right or down with the mouse

So i did this and it screwed up my computer screen. i have a overlap and its so blurry now.

None of those compatibility settings helped me on Win 8.1/Nvidia. The only thing that was needed for my machine is actually Direct3D checkbox in the config editor (and not even the compatibility one!).
