Provides a potential fix to win10 framerate issues due to gamepads.
And how to play at a higher resolution using vpatch.
And being able to use steam overlay with vpatch & thcrap (or not)
And also just having thcrap.

Gamepad framerate issue
Now whats exactly going on here?

Well it appears that the custom.exe's default settings have a issue if for some reason if you have ever plugged in a usb gamepad (controller) Atleast that's what i think is happening.

Now how do we fix it? Well the easy answer might be to unplug or plug back in said gamepad.
However this can prove a little annoying, So why not change those default settings?

Now to do so boot up the configuration tool from the start prompt.
Or at the game directory at (since this is a steam guide on the steam version)
"DRIVE"/"PROGRAM FILES"/Steam/steamapps/common/th09 (Then the lil pesky custom.exe)

If for whatever reason the game isn't there, Or you cant find the directory. Instead go to your steam library, And then right click on touhou 9 on the left, Then click the following Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files. (If this doesn't work just search "steam browse local files")

Now after all this "exploring" for custom.exe.
You might realise (Oh wait this is touhou!) And remember that its all in japanese.
Don't worry i have got you covered, Using thcrap (dontask) and "magic" ill even SHOW YOU!!!

Now your eyes might be drawn immediately to "Don't use Directinput for input control"
However it didn't end up working for me, But that doesn't mean it doesn't work for you.

Now what we are really after is the part where it says "1P controller" and "2P controller"
Now the default settings are 1P = Gamepad 1 and 2P = Gamepad 2

If you are ONLY going to use a keyboard (especially singeplayer!) Make sure to put both 1P & 2P At the "Complete keyboard" setting. (Well if you are going to using a keyboard)

If you are going to use a gamepad (controller) Keep in mind you will have to change them
depending on which player is using which kind of controller. (or keyboard idkmanITSCRAZYMAN)

Now of course obviously this isn't 100% in-depth about what each combination does.
HOWEVER if you have a problem with framerate, OR your keyboard or gamepad (controller) isn't working, Then It might not hurt to experiment with these settings!

Now i can only speak from someone who has only had a issue with framerate, Due to this SPECIFIC issue. So i cant exactly 100% help with anything that isn't this specific problem, However once again it wouldn't hurt that much to fiddle around in custom.exe to see if something fixes it. If you still have any problems i would recommend searching and asking others. Such as on the VARIOUS touhou fan forum webisites out there. I'm sure even if you have any SUPER mysterious problems, That someone out there can help you. (just not me(maybe))
vpatch and dx8>dx9
Since you are already here, And probably using win10 AND probably just got the game.
Here are some lil extra things that might help you.

DX8 to DX9 converter
Now this lil nifty thing that i will just refer to as "DXCONV" Is a fix not just for touhou and th9 specifically, It seems to cover various games with DirectX8 issues.
Now i don't think i need to explain much as the Touhou Wiki (https://en.touhouwiki.net) does so.
But essentially it will help people playing this game on DirectX9 or above.

Now in order to install this, You will simply need to do these things.
  • Download DXCONV from its own website, Which the wiki links to.
  • Use your unzipping program of choice to unzip the contents.
  • Then move those contents into the game directory.
And as long as something didn't set on fire it should work!

VPatch
Ok now that is to many features for me to count.
But the short version is if you want less input delay, To play at higher resolutions, And framerate.
(just don't expect 165 fps th9 to be "causal")
And once again that little wiki helps us get the link to it. (Which is Mediafire)

Now in order to install this, You will simply need to do these things.
  • Make sure you are on th09 1.50 beta
  • Download VsyncPatch.zip.
  • Unzip VsyncPatch.zip.
  • Now in the folder, Head to vpatch_rev4.
  • Now locate "vpatch.exe, vpatch.ini, and vpatch_th09.dll".
  • Now put all of those into the th9 game directory.
Now you can get around to using it!

Of course now the only question is how do you use it?
Well instead of using touhou9.exe to launch the game we use vpatch.exe.
And then in order to change its settings we look in vpatch.ini.
Now i don't want to much of a headache trying to explain everything in it.
So instead ill sum what i know atleast in a little image.
Now of course you will have to go into the game directory every time to launch the game. *
However i know there is probably some fix to this but... nah idk its fine ill deal with it.
* (The section under here discussing SteamEdit provides a fix to this.)
**(Im not sure if SteamEdit is compatible with thcrap(however it seems thcrap fixes this on its own so i made ANOTHER section on how to install thcrap aswell(note that both cant be used at the same time i belive????????)))
Steam Overlay using SteamEdit
PLEASE NOTE:This only covers SteamEdit, As it seems thcrap can do this aswell (At the cost of not being able to launch from steam directly(So if you want thcrap go to that section instead))

Using SteamEdit to launch vpatch from steam with steamoverlay.

Now as stated in the vpatch section, While using vpatch you are instead required to launch the game within the game directory with vpatch.exe. And since the steam release introduces steam remote play, Some of you may have noticed that steam overlay is also something you have to give up while using vpatch. Aswell as being able to track game hours on steam.
However, By editing appinfo.vdf, We can change which executable steam uses to launch the game, Therefore allowing us to bring back the steam overlay, And also track hours on steam, it also allows you to much more easily boot up vpatch directly from steam.

Now honestly, Doing this manually by editing appinfo.vdf yourself seems to be... "a hassle"
So instead we will be covering on how to this using SteamEdit. So...
In order to get SteamEdit, Head over to its official website at https://steamedit.tg-software.com/
Now as the website itself covers the download process ill be skipping over that part.

Now that you have SteamEdit downloaded, Simply launch SteamEdit.exe and Follow these steps.
Now at the top of the interface you will have a dropdown list of all games you have. (apparently)
Of course we are here to edit Touhou 9 Phantasmagoria of Flower View. (still love that name)
So now simply scroll down the list (or up) until you find touhou 9, And select "Edit Launch"

(this method could most likely be used for every single touhou game on steam using vpatch.)

Now our goal here is to simply change th09.exe to vpatch.exe. (or whatever ever else you want)
To do this we will click on the button on the right of th09.exe, wich will boot up File explorer.
Which will hopefully be in your game directory. If not make your way over there.
Now simply select vpatch.exe and press Open.

This prompt will pop up, Simply just press Yes.
(Now if anything bad for some reason were to happen there is a revert button.)

Now back in the launch editor, It should now say "vpatch.exe" instead of "th09.exe" at the top.
If the changes are correct simply press Ok.
Now finally press Save & Refresh. (THIS WILL RESTART STEAM)
And you should be done! Now when you launch touhou 9 you should be greeted with...

Okay i don't know why it exactly does that but it doesn't matter.
However now when selecting the first option it should now boot up vpatch with steamoverlay!(YAY)
Infact here is even some proof of it working, Featuring WIDE TOUHOU 9 ™ (not actually ™)
With steam overlay.

Now if you excuse me i will be playing this game with my friend. infact i might even update this guide on how the various methods of netplay work. just no promises okay?
Steam Overlay using thcrap (and also thcrap)
PLEASE NOTE:thcrap seems incompatible with SteamEdit (Or launching directly from steam(HOWEVER IT DOES HAVE STEAM OVERLAY AND TRACKS GAME HOURS ON STEAM)

Now in order to install thcrap (i love the name btw)
You can simply jump over to https://www.thpatch.net/wiki/Touhou_Patch_Center:Download
You will now be at the download page where you simply well... PRESS DOWNLOAD
You now have the incredible thcrap.zip (oh i already downloaded it oh well)
Now simply put this into ANY folder (ok dont test me on that) OK ANY NORMAL FOLDER
OK ANY NON SYSTEM FOLDER

Now simply run thcrap.exe and you will then be greeted by the download/install screen
Please note that i only know that this works with the default english patch.
But simply select the patch that you want or whatever im 5r6tyu6y5try4ty6 and hit next

Now comes the hard part(notreally) IF TH9 DOESNT SHOW UP AUTOMATICALLY
Press "Find games in a specific folder..."
And go to your game directory, which can be found with steam local files browse (justsearchitok)
NOW the game will appear here AND if it already was here you could skip the past two steps
Simply select TH9 and its config and hit next
Now you will be promted where you want your shortcuts to be created
I will be honest this is completly subjective but id recommend the following
As it minimizes clutter and puts shortcuts in thcrap and th9 so its hard to forget where they are
Now our shortcuts will appear in the game folder and thcrap folder they look like this
(or wherever else you told it to make them)
Now simply launch the game using the shortcuts instead of PLAY on steam or the different .exes
AND THERE YOU GO IT HAS VPATCH (if you followed the steps) AND STEAM OVERLAY (ihope)
Now you might notice the annoying lil thcrap gui thing simply press "Completly disable updates"
In order to disable it (however of course this disables auto updates for thcrap(if you wanna renable them there is a .bat file in the thcrap folder to reenable them again))

AND THAT SHOULD BE ALLL WOOOOOOOO
The only downside is that you cant launch the game from the play button on steam (as far as i know)

AND HERE YOU GO FEATURING TALL ℗℗™©®®™™ TOUHOU 9 WITH STEAM OVERLAY AND THE CONFIG EXE IN ENGLES (and hopefully the game you can check this in 5 seconds by going to "match mode" and seeing if it says HUAM VS HYMAN
(yes i know my second monitor's shortcuts are beautfifuflfufllflluluull)

alright i have updated the guide now to include thcrap. and it seems like thcrap is able to work with steam overlay without steam edit so ive seperated the two. hope that fixes your issue if not let me know of any issues, and any issues with the guide.:steamthumbsup::dirtblock:

This is definitely useful... but is there any workarounds to use both thcrap and vpatch together?
