Update with Official Instructions
6/13/22
Hey all! Thank you all for the incredibly positive response to this guide! Now that Bethesda has updated to the patched version, Interkarma has written up some official instructions on getting DF Unity running through Steam. Please give his steps a try first!

https://www.dfworkshop.net/using-steam-release-of-daggerfall-with-daggerfall-unity-updated/

If for whatever reason the official method doesn't work for you, I can confirm the steps in the guide here still work as a backup. Happy dungeoneering!
Introduction
The following is the original guide as provided at the launch of Daggerfall on Steam in April 2022. This method still functions but simpler alternatives have been found and added to the preface of the guide.

Want to replace the vanilla 1.0 Daggerfall experience from Steam with the objectively better Unity port? Of course you do! Here's how.

The original steps to set this up were found courtesy of user Isais1239 on Reddit, so all credit should go towards them. I'm merely putting it here for ease of anyone else that might not have found it!
Important Links
The Process
  • Install Daggerfall through Steam. You can put the files anywhere you choose, but we want Steam to consider it installed.
  • Download a separate, updated version of the Daggerfall data files. Interkarma provides a Google Drive link in his setup guide that is ideal, but you can use other versions such as the ones from UESP or GOG if you prefer.
  • Download the current release of Daggerfall Unity through the Github link above. As of writing this is 0.13.5 Beta but the process is unlikely to change for later versions.
  • In the Steam Daggerfall folder, rename the folder "DOSBox-0.74" to something else. I personally put a "-backup" on the end of it, but whatever floats your boat.
  • Create another folder named "DOSBox-0.74" and extract the files for DF Unity into it.
  • In the new "DOSBox-0.74" folder, rename "DaggerfallUnity.exe" to "DOSbox.exe".
  • In the same folder, rename the subfolder "DaggerfallUnity_Data" to "DOSBox_data". It should look like the below when complete.
  • Extract the second copy of Daggerfall that you downloaded to "The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall\DF\DAGGER". If this is the version provided by Interkarma, it should just be data for the "ARENA2" directory. Overwrite all of the contents.
  • Run the Unity executable that we renamed to "DOSbox.exe" and use the interface to select the folder with the Daggerfall game files, likely "\The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall\DF\DAGGER". The window will turn green if it recognizes it as valid. Press OK and then exit.

You're all set! The Unity port should now launch from Steam instead of the DOSBox version.

Good luck and remember your ebony dagger!
Update for GOG Cut
3/30/23
As several good folks have mentioned, the GOG Cut version isn't exactly ideal for long term use. It isn't being kept up to date, plus there were several incidents regarding distribution permissions not being gathered. I do think there's still some value in being able to see a "finished" configuration for anyone a little squeamish about moving folders around though, so I'm leaving these notes here albeit at the bottom of the guide. You do not need to follow these steps if you've completed either of the methods above!

6/16/22
Well slap me with a Wabbajack and call me Grandma Shirley, there's an even easier way to get this ol' girl up and running! This was found courtesy of Whamu in the Steam forum.

GOG has released a preconfigured version of DF Unity they're calling the 'GOG Cut[www.gog.com]', already set with a best-of list of mods from Nexus. Download and install the version provided there, then copy the contents of the "Daggerfall Unity" installation folder that it creates into the Steam "The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall" folder. It should look something like this:

Right click the Daggerfall listing in your Steam library and select Properties. In the Launch Options field, enter the full file path address to DaggerfallUnity.exe in the Steam install folder. Put quotes around the address, enter a space, then add %command% at the end. You should have a result that looks similar to this:

"C:\Steam\steamapps\common\The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall\DaggerfallUnity.exe" %command%

That should be it! The game boots directly into DF Unity straight away, no hassle.

Please be aware that at time of writing there are concerns from some of the original modders that they had not fully given their consent to their mods being in this package. You may instead want to run these steps with a vanilla installation of DF Unity instead, but there may be additional configuration needed for that.

Happy dungeoneering!

I have installed Unity in
C:\Games\Daggerfall Unity\1.1.1
so that these files are in that folder
DaggerfallUnity_Data
MonoBleedingEdge
DaggerfallUnity.exe
UnityCrashHandler64.exe
UnityPlayer.dll
The game works properly when I click on DaggerfallUnity.exe '
My question ,what ' launch options' do i type for Steam to start the game and log hours when I press Play game in Steam itself rather than using my off steam exe?

Steam should automatically provide the final official patched version of the game now, so that shouldn't be a worry now. Initially it only had the release version.

Since the 1.0 version released today, I'd recommend looking at the official steps provided by the dev over anything I've got here. It's woefully out of date at this point! https://www.dfworkshop.net/daggerfall-unity-1-0-release/
