Mystery Machine Achievement Guide
By HighRoller
This guide covers the workaround of getting the achievement with a Virtual Machine by using
Virtual GPU 3D Accelaration.

Requirements:
Chipset and CPU need to support a Virtual Machine and also Onboard-Graphics!
VM: VMware Workstation 17.6 Player
Main-OS: Windows 10 64bit. (Works also with W11)
VM-OS: Windows 10 64bit. (Works also with W11)

*Pay attention to those shortcuts and instructions and dont confuse them!
( for ex.: restart / shutdown / Run as Admin / VM / VM-OS / Main-OS, etc. )
It's 32 steps in total during 7 chapters.

CH.1: UEFI
Depending on your MB manufacturer, names will may be different.
  • Start PC and boot into UEFI.
  • Go to ADVANCED/ CPU CONFIGURATION and enable "Intel Virtualization Technology".
(For AMD users, its called AMD-V)
  • Save settings and exit.
Ch.2: Video-Output
Removing the GPU is the way with the least complications! I recommend it.

(Not Recommended, but it also works if you leave the card in, when you have for example a watercooled card, then removing it would be to much work! If you run into trouble, then try playing with the Primary Display Setting in UEFI, mostly it's the setting iGPU or plug out the PCIe power cable(s) from your GPU.

  • Shutdown PC.
  • Start PC and boot into UEFI.
  • Go to ADVANCED/ SYSTEMAGENT/ PRIMARY DISPLAY and change
GPU output by selecting Graphics from the CPU or iGPU.
(The name depends on your system.)
You can select "Auto" if you remove your GPU like suggested in Step-5).
  • Save settings and shutdown PC.
  • (Optional): Remove GPU out of your PC.
  • Switch (HDMI/DP) videocable from the GPU to your MB.
(From now on the graphics should run completely over your CPU.)
Ch.3: Windows.iso
  • Start PC and make sure you run Windows as Admin.
  • Start the tool and download a Windows 10 64bit Home. iso.
  • Save it somewhere on your storage and remember it for later.
Ch.4: VMware
  • Download VMware Workstation 17 Player from the developers site: vmware.com
(You can buy the Full Version or get the Trial Version)
  • Install VMware.
Ch.5: VM-OS
  • Start VMware.
  • Now select: Create a new (Virtual Machine) VM.
  • Give your VM a name and choose your Windows.iso as your VM-OS.
(Check the notification: "Windows 10 and later X64 detected". If there is written something else, like "incompatible Windows.iso" or something, then you have a faulty iso-image and you need to get a new one. Check Ch.2 for how to get a fresh new iso.)
  • Select the location where you want to create the VM and choose the size of the storage
for it. (60Gb is a good choice).
  • Except the settings of your new VM and finally start the installation of the VM-OS.
  • After the installation of the VM-OS,
chill for atleast 2mins and let everything boot up the first time.
(Close the yellow-bar notification, down below, by clicking on "I Finished installing")
  • Restart the VM.
  • Go to the settings of VMware and crank up the V-RAM to the size of your Shared System Memory (See Info in NVidia Contol Panel for ex.) and the V-CPU-Cores (max) of your new VM.
  • Save and exit settings.
(Legacy-Chapter) VMware-Tools (EX CH.6)
In order to make the 3D Acceleration work, you need to download and install some 3D tools.
(It was mentioned, that this CH.6 is not needed anymore! VMware's newest Workstation Player 17.6 version has the tools already built-in.)

  • Start VM-OS as Admin.
  • In the upper left corner: Expand "Player"/ "Manage" and then install VMware-Tools.
  • Restart VM-OS.
  • After login,
chill for atleast 2mins and let everything boot up properly and then restart the VM.

(I wont delete this chapter for troubleshooting purposes. If your 3D acceleration doesn't work, then check if the tools are actually installed or if you can reinstall them, etc.)
Ch.6: Steam and 3DMARK
  • Start VM-OS as Admin.
  • Download and install Steam and logg into your Steam account.
  • Download and install 3DMARK.
  • Close 3DMark after the installation.
Ch.7: DirectX11 Benchmark
  • Download and install an DX11 benchmark,
for example ICE STORM/ EXTREME (Why Ice Storm? fast download and fast benchmark)
    • from the Steam Store Page
      or
    • go to 3DMark in your Steam Library and then check on the right side: Manage my DLC´s or
    • go to the Game Properties of 3DMark.
"You cant find it in 3DMark itself anymore, so look where i said! Search in 3DMARK's Store Page under the DLC's first, if you have never installed ICE Storm with your Steam Acc. before, otherwise you may wont find it on those other two locations!"
Final Chapter: Get the Cheevo
  • Start now 3DMARK. (The VM and Steam need to stay online during the benchmark!)
  • Allow User Control of Sysinfo.
  • Start the benchmark ICE STORM EXTREME and get the achievement at the end of the test!

(If it didnt worked the first time, then restart the VM and try it once more!)

Congratulations!
Thanks to:
Thanks to UL_Jarnis with his tip about the VM´s.

Thanks to Barnie for providing his screenshot in Ch.6.

Thanks to Jarhem for the hint about the allocated V-RAM and setups with more then 32GB Total RAM and his tip about the newest version of VMware, were you can skip CH.6 (Legacy Chapter) from now on.

*Thanks to VMware for offering such an great software*

*Big thanks to 3DMark for leaving this workaround opened and giving us such an awesome benchmarktool*

Followed from Ch.3 with a Win10 22H2 ISO and VMware Workstation Pro 17.6. I ran Sky Diver to get the cheevo! Needed to increase RAM allocation to 16GB for the VM for the benchmark option to appear for iGPU.

Thanks for this guide. I don't have an integrated GPU so I tried anyway and it worked with the Sky Diver benchmark.

Great guide. I got the achievement using VMware Workstation 17.6 Pro and Windows 11 23H2 for both the Host and Guest OS. I used my Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti instead of the processors integrated GPU. Tested using Ice Storm and Sky Diver benchmarks. Thank you!
