What is Little Nightmares?
Little nightmares is a small masterpiece that tells us a dark and cruel tale. The developers managed to convey the entire atmosphere and history of the world, without dialogues or any words at all. With each addition, and then with the release of the second part, they revealed more and more of this universe, allowing us to put the puzzle together piece by piece. And although there are still many questions left, we can roughly understand what is happening in the universe of little nightmares. In this article, I talk mostly about the first part of the game.

Explanation of the plot + theory
I'll start with the fact that the place where the game takes place is called the Belly. It is a ship that has a strange appearance. From above it is an island with a pipe, and the view from below is more reminiscent of a turtle shell. Its location is similar to an iceberg, as only the island is on the surface, and the rest is under water. But periodically it completely rises from the water, allowing guests to get on board. It works on a pair, and its performance is supported by robots, we can see this in the second supplement. Also, the ship has a large net for fishing, we cannot see it in the game itself, but it is depicted in the concept art. Its main inhabitants are Leda, aka the Mistress of the ship, the Watchman who watches over the children, the twins who prepare food for the guests, and the Grandmother who lives in the depths. Children, nomads and guests are not considered permanent residents of this place.

The main antagonist of the game is the Mistress of the Womb, who lives in a more luxurious place than the other residents. Sometimes she goes out and watches the guests, or greets them in this way. Outwardly, this is a very tall woman, her clothes resemble Japanese geishas. She wears a mask on her face, hiding her true appearance. She is very selfish as she uses children for her own purposes.

And what about its goals?
One theory suggests that the Lady uses people's souls to regain her beauty. In the universe of the game there are several comics and in the second we are told about mirrors that show people's desires. Because of which one of the girls eventually became a hunchback and is now afraid of all mirrors. Perhaps it was such a mirror that made the Lady old and ugly. Or it's just an old woman who dreams of becoming young and beautiful again.
Also, according to one of the theories, she is on the contrary young, this is hinted at by the model of the Landlady, which is in the game files. But the mirrors lie and show her old and not beautiful, so she breaks them. It is suggested that the Lady used to live in the Pale City, hinted at by the character description on the official website, which states that she views the outside world as chaos. Perhaps for this reason she left the city and settled in Chrevi. This is also hinted at by one of the rooms in little nightmares 2. In it there is a statuette that we broke in the first part, as well as a portrait of the Lady.

Another theory suggests that she is very fond of children, as many small dolls can be seen in her room, but this theory is disproved by her behavior. If she loved children, she would hardly have kept them in such a place and treated them in such a way. However, if we recall the Pretender from the mobile game Very Little Nightmares, she communicates with dolls, although she could have done this with the same children, but preferred plush friends. Perhaps the Mistress also replaces the children with dolls.

It is known that she knows how to turn children into nomes. However, why does she do this and what are children doing in such a terrible place? Let's first analyze how they get on this ship. For this, you will have to turn to the comics again, but this time to the first part. In it, we are shown how Shosta runs away from the Cooks and ends up with a group of children. They ask her how she got here, and then she remembers how she walked through the city, surrounded by huge and fat people, like guests, maybe it is from this city that guests come to Chrev. But she was found by a character who only appears once in a photo in the game. They call him the Carrier or the Shadow. We don't know if he's good or bad, but we know he's just doing his job. Namely, he finds children and sends them to Cherev.

Children do not have the best fate when they get to Cherevo. Either they are used as food, or the Mistress absorbs their souls, turning them into nomes. And in the form of nomes, they do all kinds of work, like maintaining energy on the Belly. Perhaps the children are also used as labor staff, hinted at by the concept art, which shows Shosta washing guests and serving them food. However, the children do not want such a fate and try in every way to escape from the Womb. That is why the place where children live turns into a kind of prison. There is electricity everywhere to play, an eye-shaped mechanism that prevents children from escaping, as well as a Watchman who watches over them and sends them to the kitchen when the Cooks need meat.

But if you think about it, there is too much meat in Cherev, there wouldn't be so much from skinny children alone. And here it is worth paying attention to the guests. Guests are a very important part of the Belly. They come to the ship with only one purpose, to eat as much as possible. However, none of them is going back. When I was talking about the main plot, I remembered the moment where the Cook is cutting something behind the screen, it is not difficult to guess who it might be. Guests sit behind similar screens. This explains the presence of such a huge amount of meat, as well as such a huge pile of shoes. But why is all this necessary? There are several theories for this. The first is related to what I already said when I talked about the Mistress, that this is all her doing and she just wants to regain her former beauty by absorbing people's souls.

The second theory suggests that the Womb is actually a living organism and all its inhabitants are prisoners, including the Mistress herself. And everyone plays the role of a certain organ.
The hostess is the brain, eyes and ears. Guardian immunity, Cooks and guests digestive system, nome - cardiovascular system; and Shosta is a virus that destroys this organism. That is why Chrevo will be able to exist without all the inhabitants. However, I prefer the first theory.

Another theory refers us to the first title of the game, The Hunger. Perhaps Utrobi is the personification of hunger. And it exists only because there is hunger. And all residents feel this feeling in one way or another. It is interesting that Cherevo in the original The Maw translates as "mouth". And in our interpretation, the name Belly is like an abbreviation for gluttony.
Why is our heroine called the Sixth?
The game has no answer to this, the game doesn't even mention her name. We find out what her name is only from the game's official website. But why the Sixth? There are several hints for this. Sixth is just a serial number. This is hinted at by the concept art, which depicts 6 children. Of them, we know only Mono, the hero of the second part of the game and the Sixth. The other 4 children are in the comics, but we don't know them by name. Mono stands first and his name means "one", hinting that Sixth is just an ordinal number. Her name also refers to the seven deadly sins in Catholicism. The sixth sin is gluttony, and our heroine is always hungry.

There are many theories about who the Sixth is. We know little about the past of this girl. But the story begins with very little nightmares, which takes place in the Nest. The developers decided to trick us, because until the end of the game we thought we were playing for her. But in reality, she only appeared a few times and helped us. And this very raincoat belongs to a completely different girl. At the end of the game, we can see her successfully leaving this place. And then she gets to the Pale City, where she is caught by the Hunter. And here begins the plot of the second part of small nightmares.

Some theories suggest that she may be the daughter of the Mistress, as there are many portraits of the Lady standing with some girl. And the fact that the Sixth is the Mistress. This theory went exactly after the end of little nightmares 2. But in my opinion, they are too tight by the ears. Because they don't have any strong evidence. But there is another theory that suggests that the Sixth simply became the heir of the Mistress, or more simply, replaced her, starting a new cycle.
