limited mode & NAT type issue
Hello guys,

Status of the servers

The american and european servers still online and there is no plans from ubi to shut it down for now, so you should be able to play online.

Multipayer won't go online and LIMITED MODE message issue

If it says GO ONLINE with a red menu background on the mutiplayer main menu and if you keep getting the LIMITED MODE message over and over again, when klicking on the GO ONLINE field, then you clearly need to do some router setting changes. Pls check screenshots below.

Screenshots:

blow you see how it should looks on the on the multiplayer start menu:

About NAT:
I always recomend to turn on UPnP, or to set the ports for Ubisoft games if you play PvP modes, even if you can go online without any problem, as you can still facing some small connectivity issues or some lag, as you will may have moderate (orange) or strikt (red) NAT type. If everthing is fine, your NAT type in the mutliplayer game menu, should be shown as green or showing written as open, like the second screenshot below.

How to Fix

Here below is two solutions, how to fix both issues. You don't need to do both if the frist one works.

-First solution
Enable UPnP:
Some players reported that this step helped them to fix their connectivity issue. UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play and is a feature that allows applications to automatically forward ports. It can be toggled on or off in your router settings.
Unfortunately not every router have this option abaliavle, or sometimes it's just hard do find, because you can not see an UPnP tab, or it dosen't say UPnP anyware and you need look for example, for something similar that says "Automatically turn on port sharing for this device".
Enabing UPnP is the most fast and easyer way to fix the issue and i recomend to try this first before trying to fowarding ports.
To access to your router settings pls just follow the steps 1 to 8, on the section "How to forwarding ports or activate UPnP step by step:"

-Second solution
Is fowarding the ports of the AC4 game, but this part is a bit more time consuming and a bit more tricky as every router settings interface is build differently and have different tabs. Pls follow on this case, all 14 Steps bellow.

How to forwarding ports or activate UPnP step by step:

1. Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. Press the keys at the same time to open the Run window.

2. Then type CMD into the search bar and click OK. You can also hit Enter on your keyboard.

3. Next, type ipconfig and press Enter.

4. You will see your router’s IP address next to the Default Gateway and also note down your IPv4 address from your PC, because you might need this information later.

5. Open a web browser. You can use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or any browser you want.

6. Then type your router’s IP address into the address bar.

7. Next, enter your router’s username and password. You can find mostly the login details on the router itself on the stickers, or on the user manual.

8. Then go to UPnP or to the port forwarding settings on your router. The exact steps to get to the correct settings, will vary depending on which router you have. In most cases, you will have to go to the Advanced Steup tab or for Internet tab. There look for UPnP, or someting similar like port forwarding or NAT, Security, Gaming, Firewall, or Virtual Servers. Just klick on all tabs without change or save any settings, till you find UPnP or the port forwarding option.

Next steps you just need to do, if your need to foward ports.

9. Next, create a new port forwarding rule. Some routers require you to click Add New, Add Custom Service, or something similar. Maybe you will need to typ your IPv4 address first or choose a device from a drop dwon list, instead of typing in the device IPv4, before having even the option to even create a new port rule.

10. Then enter a name for the service or application. You can give this any name you want. It is recommended that you use one that lets you identify the rule you’ve created, like AC4 for exemple.

11. Next, type in the port numbers you want to use. Keep in mind that you need to create a port forwarding rule for each port number separately.

These are the ports you need for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag on PC:
UDP: 3074, 3658, 4646, 21115, 21116, 21120, 21125, 21130, 21275, 21276, 21280, 21285, 21290, 22050, 22051, 22055, 22060

12. Then select a port forwarding protocol UDP or, TCP/UDP, Both, or All.

13. Next, type in your computer’s IP address. Most routers provide fields where you can enter the IP address of your device. There are also routers that let you choose a device instead of typing in the device’s IPv4 address. If you already had to do this on step 9, you may can just skip this step, as you will be not asked for it on the window, like for exemple on the screemshot below from my router.

Here is a pic from my router how it's look like:

14. Finally, save your settings. Most of the time, you will be able to click on buttons that say Save or Apply. There are other routers that require you to click on Enable before you can hit on Save.

When you finished and saved you should see a list with 17 ports. If you have the option to set the ports for IPv4 and IPv6 you will have each port twice listed and you will see 34 lines saved, instead of 17.

If you still can not go online, verify you games files, as sometimes after an update some files can be corupted.

If you still have questions or issues

If you still have issues to set the ports on your router or to finde UPnP, please check the router manual or contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or the offiicial support website of your router manufacturer, to help you with that.

If you are outside from europe or america, it can be that you still can not go online after your try everthing, as your continent have just one server location for all ubisoft games and you are too fare from the next avaliable ubi server.

The game is also old and ubisoft limited already the number of people that can go online at the same time, on AC4 multiplayer, to have also more capacity and space for newer ubi games titles. So some days you can go online and on some days may not. So don't be suprised if this happens to you.

@anakodzz it was never possible to connect a device to the internet without a router or modem in between, since private persons start to had access to it in 1991. well there is some modern hauses that you can plug the wire directly to the lan socket on the wall and you will have internet access, but this sockets are always conectect to a router or modem that is installed in the building somewhere.

I'm still not sure what to put in the boxes. It wants an IP address for internet/external host, and the number in int/ext port. Although, I ended up just trying to find games again and I found I could. I feel the problem is more that the game doesn't have many players.
