they did also build right at the edge of the map which will make defending way harder. cons and pros

@Wireshock is right, you can adjust the map size via the "Advnaced" Button near the bottom of the screen on the "Select starting site" (Before you start a colony) UI then adjust the "Map Size" section to your liking. This colony on the screenshot is not large though, it's only the default map size(250x250).

Pretty sure the map size is an option when you are picking a landing zone.
