Antarctica is the most severe climatic region of the Earth with low air temperatures, strong winds, snow storms and fogs. The mainland and nearby islands have a cover glaciation. The highest recorded temperature is +20.75 °C, the temperature was recorded at the polar station located on an island near the northern tip of the mainland on February 14, 2020. The lowest is -91.2 °C (Japanese station Fuji Dome, Queen Maud Land, December 2013). The average temperature in summer is -30 °C, in winter -60 °C.

According to the UN, the last decade (2010s) was the warmest in Antarctica, and 2016 was the hottest (2019 was the second in this regard). The first month of 2020 also became the warmest January for all time of conducting temperature observations in Antarctica.
