Introduction

Hello and welcome to my guide for breeding a Gold Chocobo without racing!
By following this guide, you should be able to obtain a Gold Chocobo in less than 2 hours.

How does it work?
We will be using the RNG of the game to manipulate the game into thinking certain flags are set, enabling us to bypass chocobo racing altogether!

This can be done as early as Disc 2, when Tifa is your party leader.

CHANGELOG/NOTES:

Note:
This is a port of a video guide I found on YouTube a long time ago. The video I had saved no longer exists, but it's a well-known method, but I didn't see any guides for it here at the original time of writing, so I figured I'd share. (10/27/2014)

Note 2:
I moved this guide over from my old account. (3/22/2024)
Prep Work
To begin, go to the Chocobo Farm and buy the following:

  • 6 Chocobo Stables
  • 70 Krakka Greens
  • 1 Saraha Nut

Next, go to the Bone Village area and find a monster called Vlakorados, pictured below.
Steal 2 Carobs Nuts from them. You will need to find 2 of them, as you only encounter them alone and not in groups.

Lastly, fly to Goblin Island (top-rightmost island on the map) and Steal a Zeio Nut from a Goblin, pictured below:

Catching Chocobos
Now for the slightly annoying part.
Depending on RNG, you may spend a bit of time finding the proper chocobo and enemy groups.

First, fly to the Icicle Inn area and catch a Wonderful Chocobo. Wonderful Chocobos only appears with one or two Jumpings enemies, pictured below:

A chocobo with a rabbit and a wolf will NOT be Wonderful and should be ignored. Once caught, send this one to the Stable.

Next, fly to the Mideel area and catch a Great Chocobo. They appear alongside one or two Spiral enemies, pictured below:

Breeding, RNG, and You
With the Nuts, Greens, and Chocobos handy, fly back to the Chocobo Farm and follow these instructions exactly!

1) Get as close as you can to it and save your game.

2) Next, HARD RESET your game. For PS1/PS2, simply press the reset button. For PS Vita, press and hold the screen and choose reset. For PC, press ALT+F4.

3) Now load the game and run into the Chocobo Farm as fast as you can.

4) Talk to Choco Billy and select Moving Chocobos. Select the GREAT one FIRST.
If you have followed this guide exactly, the chocobo will be Female.

5) Next, put the Wonderful Chocobo in a stable. It should be a male.
(NOTE: If you did not get a Great Female and a Wonderful Male, reset your game and run into the farm faster.)

6) Next, save your game and hard reset again.

7) Run into the Stable again as fast as you can. Talk to Choco Billy and feed ONE Krakka Green to ANY chocobo.

8) Now mate the Great Female with the Wonderful Male. Choose the female first and use a Carob Nut. As a result, you should end up with a Blue Female!

9) Exit the farm and fight 6 random battles.

10) Save as close to the farm as you can and hard reset once again.

11) Get inside as fast as possible and talk to Choco Billy.

12) Feed 50 Krakka Greens to ANY chocobo.

13) Mate Great Female and Wonderful Male again, choosing the female first. Choose your remaining Carob Nut. Following this guide, you should end up with a Green Male.

14) Exit the farm and fight 8 random battles.

15) Save as close to the farm as you can and hard reset yet again.

16) Once again, get into the farm as fast as you can.

17) Feed 5 Krakka Greens to ANY chocobo.

18) Mate the Blue Female with the Green Male. Choose the Blue one first. Use a Saraha Nut.
Following this guide, you should end up with a Black Female.

19) Exit the farm and fight 3 random battles.
(NOTE: If the Black Female isnt ready to mate after 3 random battles, go out and fight 4 additional random battles.)

20) Save as close to the farm as you can and hard reset one more time.

21) Run inside as fast as you can yet again.

22) Feed 6 Krakka Greens to ANY chocobo.

23) Mate the Black Female with the Wonderful Male. Choose the Black one first. Use the Zeio Nut.
Following this guide, you shoudl end up with a Female Gold chocobo!

Go get some Materia!
Off the top of my head you can now obtain the following:

Nickel!

Thanks for the great guide!
Worked well on the Switch version as well.

For some reason it doesn't work for me. At first it all worked perfectly up to the Black Chocobo, but I can't get the Gold one. After getting the Black Chocobo, I did all as described: 3 Battles, feeding 6 of the correct greens to someone, then mating the Black with the Wonderful Yellow with Zeio Nut, but all I got is a Female Black Chocobo. I even repeated everything again and got the same result. I'm running in as fast as possible, and my timing worked for all the others, really don't know what I am missing.

No, Tifa being the lead just denotes the soonest you can do this trick, as it happens at a certain point of the story. You can absolutely do it with any party composition after that point!
