Dragon Quest III HD-2D Achievement Guide
By Ramiel
This is a simple guide of all game achievements, with references of how to get them. This is not a walktrought, I only made a summary of how to achieve each of them and some strategys. I tried to not put spoilers, but it's inevitable to something escape my grasp.

Introduction
Hi o/

This is my first guide ever and I wrote while playing this game for the first time. English is not my nactive language, so I appreciate for kind corrections in the commentaries.

Most achievements will be unlocked naturally while you play the game until the very end of the post-game and there are no missables so far as I know, beside the limited amount of mimic-type enemies.
Important Tips and Tricks
  • A male character is needed for Puffection achievement. In theory a male companion as party leader can also work but need testing.
  • You can play on Draconian mode all you want, but do youself a favor and play on Dragon Quest mode while farming levels for the collection achievement of learning all skill and spells in the post game.
  • Said that, you can also get all achievements by playing on Dracky Mode.
  • Don't spend Elfin Elixirs or Magic Waters, you'll need 25 of both in the post-game dungeon.
  • Don't spend all the gold received from Monster Arenas, you will absolutely need the extra gold to buy Elfin Elixirs. Before Patch 1.2 I had to pay 880k gold to buy 22 missing Elfin Elixirs and around 140k to buy 4 Flame Armors. I really believe that they give so much gold in the Arena specifically because of this post-game dungeon. After patch 1.2 you still would need to pay 400k gold for 10 Elfin Elixir, not expensive as before but still a hefty sum.
  • Recruiting Monsters and the Monster Wrangler class will be a cornerstone for the post-game bosses.
  • Beware! There is a limited amount of mimic type enemies, and if I'm not wrong, Blasto kills don't add a monster in the record. So avoid using instant kill skills/spells against such mobs until you have registered them.
Main Story
You will receive those achievements while progressing the game main story, so I'll only say jokes or extreme summarys. No way to miss them.

Optional Storys
Achievements related to optional story quests or events.

Regal Ruler

After defeating Robbin' odd, return the crown to the King in any moment and accept his proposal. You can refuse and accept later any time. If i'm not wrong, if you accept and reliquinsh your reward, if you sleep in the inn or save the game in the church, you can accept the proposal again.

Wakey-Wakey, Rise and Shiine

North of Koryv there is the sleeping village of Norvik with a side quest that include Faery Village and Underground Lake. Explore those locations and you will end up lifting the curse in Norvik.

Puffection

Go to Asham during the night, near the west gate of the city and below the church you will find a young lady. Talk to her and accept the puff-puff. You need a male character to get this achievement. In theory by changing the party leader to a male companion can make it work, I need to test if the event happens.

Rip-Off Merchant

Save before getting this achievement. Have at least 2200 gold and go to northwest store in Asham during the day. Buy Strong Medicine without refusing the price that he gives (if you refuse the merchant will offer a new price that will not coun to the achievement). Reload the save.

Finders Keepers

In the left of the Pyramid entrance there will be stairs for the pyramid's basement. In the Northwest corner of the basement there will be two statues. Interact with the left statue and it will open a new staircase for a new basement. In the end you will find a sarcofagus with a good item for Martial Artists or simply to sell (around 6k gold). After getting the item you will be cursed to fight every 5~10 steps with no way to avoid those fights. So far this would be simples, yes? No, because the whole basement is a anti magic area that nullify any magic cast.

My recommendation? Stack Medicinal Herbs and flee every battle. Maybe because I had a level 18 thief, my fleeing rate was nealry 90% of time. I don't recommend fighting your way back to surface unless you are really high level, maybe 23~27. Because the Shades has a low chance to use a 50 dmg fire breath and Walking Corpses can appear/summoned and each of them can hit your party with 35~50 damage (values on Draconian difficulty).

Heroic Headgear

This sidequest can be started before beating Baramos, but it can only be completed later. Go to Mur and complete the events there to get a special helmet. There is a Dwarf Shrine directly north of the Tower of Transcendence in the ice region of the continent. Talk with the Dwarf there. Go meet your mother and talk with her.

Now in the new region unlocked after baramos, go talk with a old friend in the church's jail in Tantegel. While progressing the story you will find about Kol village, and someone there will talk about the location of the remaining group but its not really needed to talk with him if you following this guide.

Go directly east of Tantegel on boat and in some point you will find Quagmire Cave along the coast. Inside it you will find about a Blue Ore in Gaia's Navel. Go to Reeve to get a second Wrecking Ball. Now go to Gaia's Navel and in the same floor you got the Orb there is statue that when interacted will open way to a basement. The Zenithian Ore is there.

Now go back talk with the Dwarf in his shrine and receive the first Legendary Gear for the Hero.

Stately Sword

After talking with the Tantegel's King, you hear that someone went to Catlin to repair something. While exploring the world looking for the key locations showed in the map you received in the start of Alefgard, you can end up fiding Damdara where there are rumours of Orichalcum can be found there. In Cantlin you will find a Broken Blade that in time past was know as the Sword of Kings.

After fiding Kol after progressing the main story you find a Blacksmith. Go get his hammer in Jipang. With both the Orichalcum, Broken Blade and the Hammer. The Sword of Kings will be reforged! One Legendary Weapon for the Hero =D
Post-Game
Content only accessible in the post-game after defeating Zoma for the first time.

Monster Champion

You need to defeat Xenlon under the turn limit and wish for a new monster arena. I easily won by using fully powered Green Dragon (Wild Side), Cureslime (Fullheal and Kazing) and Slime (in full power it gets a huge bonus). Take care for not losing gold, the prize in money is so great that you can easily get over the 999999 cap. (I lost 150k gold >.<)

Farewell, Mortal

You need to defeat Xenlon in the Citadel Tower 7 times. First two battles with 35 and 25 or less turns respectively. All remaining battles need to be won with 15 or less turns. This is my suggestion of order to pick rewards:

  • Blank space which unlock Temple of Trials.
  • Monster Arena
  • Powerful Weapon
  • Revive Ortega
  • Become the Trendiest Hero (unlock hair color change)
  • Obtain a Copy of "Guns 'n' Buns"
  • Obtain "More Guns 'n' Buns" (this option only appear after all six former wishes were chosen)

I'll be honest here, this battle seem tailored around Monster Wrangler's combo Wild Side+Monster Pile On. This combo, with more that one hundred monsters collected, do around 900~1300 damage per turn. I simply don't see any other combo which is not a max leveled+seeded character could do more.

Playing on Dragon Quest mode, my level 60 Hero, level 30 Monster Wrangler (it has full Martial Artist and Gadabout skills), level 30 Thief (it has full Warrior and Monster Wrangler skills) and level 30 Martial Artist (It has full Sage and Merchant skills) could defeat Xenlon with 14~15 rounds.

The idea is to have Hero casting Kazap (or using Rubiss Sword) and only using Omniheal when the party had 60% or less HP (my Hero has enough agility to act first that Xenlon)

My Thief and Monster Wrangler would use Wild Side and Monster Pile as much as possible.

My Martial Artist would use Accelerate once to guarante the whole party act first that xenlon and would cast Call to Arms in the remaining turns. Maybe dispeling sleep or casting Multiheal if my Hero is somehow disabled.

i could probably cut the time needed to beat Xenlon to 9 rounds if put Monster Wrangler skills on my Martial Artist.

Grand Designs

Prepare to pain. Or not. This is a highly personal take. The Super Boss which unlock this achievement is not bad and in truth is very fun, it's like a Xenlon 2.0 with more skills and don't use Wave of Disruption constantly like Xenlon. The problem is the Temple of Trials before you unlock it.

To unlock the Temple of Trials you need to win Xenlon at least once under his turn limit and select the blank option and the rewards screen. North to Aliahan a singularity will be opened which is the location of this dungeon. Different from other dungeons, you need to complete five "trials" to unlock the super boss and consequently get this achievement by beating the boss with 20 or less turns.

  • The first trial on south need you to have recruited at least 110 (or 115?) monsters.
  • The second trial on east need you to have acquired the Aurora Helm from Heroic Headgear achievement, the Sword of Kings from Stately Sword achievement and the Gringham Whip rewarded for delivering 105 of 110 mini medals from Many Medals achievement. Also the Mod Rod rewarded by the rank 9 monster arena.
  • The third trials in the northeast is a normal dungeon with the caveat that yours character need to be holding a stave or axe to do and receive normal damage, otherwise you do only 10% of your normal damage and take 10 times more damage. In theory this is not a great penalty because most of your damage come from skills and spells, the problem that can make this painful for some people like me, this will limit which class your companions can use effectively on it. Specially because the "boss" of this trial are two waves of Pandora Boxes. The first wave have two boxes, the second four boxes. They are the ultimate mimics that can also use Omniheal and Sleeping spells. To really survive this fight I would recommend having your three companions using Blasto skill from Sage and at least having level 45~50 to everyone to have a good HP pool to survive the onslaught until the Hero can cast Omniheal or use Sunstone to awake all sleeping companions.
  • The fourth trial is the same that the third, but your party can only use claws and boomerangs.
  • The fifth trial requires you to deliver some items:
    • 4 Hardwood Headwear, found in Khoryv item shop.
    • 4 Staff of Sentencing, found in Baharata equipment shop.
    • 4 Epic Apron, found in Cityburg (the city your merchant pal help to build) item shop.
    • 4 Slime Earrings, found in Kol item shop.
    • 25 Magic Water, found in Cloudsgate Citadel item shop.
    • 10 Elfin Elixir, found in Faerie Village. Each one of these costs 40k Gold. "Only" 400k Gold to buy the full set. You probably will not have problems if you read the "Important Tips and Tricks" section of this guide before you went too far in the game...
    • 4 Flame Armor, bought in Rimuldar equipment shop. Around 136k gold.

With all five trials completed you finally unlock the final Super Boss. As I commented above, you need to beat the boss under 20 turns to receive the Grand Medal and get this achievement. Being honest I was mindless grinding my characters before fighting him, and by mistake I started the fight on Dracky mode and finished it on with 18 turns by having my Hero acting as a healer two companions using Wild Side+Monster Pile and the last companion using defense buffs in my party.

I got the final achievements because of that, but it was not my intention. So I tried again on Dragon Quest Mode and it took me 24 turns to kill him. So from my humble point of view the following strategy would work:

  • Hero - Healer, holding both Sage's Stone for healing and Sunstone to awaken whole party in battle. Also some Yggdrasil Leafs. Use Sage's Stone every turn, Omniheal if two or more party members get under 60% HP or Fullheal if only one is under 60%. Awakening party member is secundary for healing.
  • Three Companions with Wild Side+Monster Pile, at least level 45 (60 is probably better).

I hope you enjoy this fight as much as I =D

A Legend is Born

Completed all other achievements, you are a legend my friend!

If you got this achievement, it means we will probably meet again in Dragon Quest I+II HD-2D. So until then o/
Collections
Achievements for completing in-game collections. Most need to be in the post-game.

Many a Medal

Post-game only. It's redundant of me to do the list of mini medals when the amazing guide All Mini Medal Locations made by GreedFeed here on steam already exists.

The following video on youtube made by 100% Guides was also helpful for me.

Monster Monitor

Post-game only. It's redundant of me to do the list of recruitable monster when the amazing guide Monster Wrangling 101 made by PootYolo and Solid-Bre already exists.

Mate of the Monsters

Post-game only. Need to beat all monsters at least once, including the super boss from Grand Designs achievement, without the turn limit restriction.

You will get most monsters registered by playing normally. This is a good video I used to complete my missing entries, made by Gamer Guru.

Beware! There is a limited amount of mimic type enemies, and if I'm not wrong, Blasto kills don't add a monster in the record. So avoid using instant kill skills/spells against such mobs until you have registered them.

Item Aficionado

You will probably unlock it naturally if you are playing the post game. This achievement is about the number of unique items you have collected and not the total.

Able Conjurer

Basically the hero and companions need to learn every single skill and spell of the game. Hero have some unique skill/spells but it will be learnt while leveling your companions.

Mastering Sage will unlock all Priest and Mage spells, so there is no sense for leveling both, but I do recommend starting out with a priest that later change to Sage in your gameplay.

There is not trick for the remaining vocations, you need to level each vocation until you get their last skill:

  • Thief: Level 33 and wisdom>85, "Backdraft"
  • Mechant: Level 36 and wisdom>96, "Call to Arms".
  • Warrior: Level 48 and wisdom>93, "Cutting Edge"
  • Martial Artist: Level 47 and wisdom>142, "Critical Claim"
  • Gadabout: Level 45 and wisdom>76, "Channel Anger"
  • Monster Wrangler: Level 44 and wisdom>103, "C-c-cold Breath"
    • You also need to recruit at least 100 monsters to unlock and strengthen skills for Monster Wrangler.

Some of the best methods to level in this game is going for Slime Hills to hunt Liquid Metal Slime or the Muddy Hands loop. I personally prefer to wait the grind until after you beat the game to enter the ??? dungeon. In the magma floor of the ??? dungeon, there's a high chance of appearing a King Hydra with some other mobs and a rare chance of appearing three King Hydras.

The solitaire King Hydra encounters will reward around 25k XP and don't flee like the annoying Liquid Metal Slimes, the Hero with Kazap/Gigaslash and a Monster Wrangler with Wild Side+Monster Pile you can make short work of the hydra. By other hand the encounter with three hydras is a pain and I only recommend fighting them with a party 60+ or by playing in Dracky mode which make your party immune to death and you will receive around 74k xp.
Miscellaneous
Achievements of different natures, so I put them here. Most achievements are received after reaching a certain milestone in differents aspects of the game.

Join the Party

Yep, recruiting companions is optional. You can complete the game without them but there is no achievement for it beside some unique lines with some npcs after you beat the game. So recruit a party to play the game without fear and earn this achievement.

Undoing Death

This achievement is a little misleading. It says to ressurect the protagonist for the first time at the church, but it doen't work when the protagonist dies and your companions carry you to the church to ressurect. You need a full party wipe and in the loading screen select ressurect in the church. Ressurecting this way make you lose only money and not the exp or loot you got before dying.

Juggling Jobs

Change the vocation of a companion for the first time in Alltrades Abbey.

Sage Advice

Change the vocation of a companion to Sage. There are two ways of doing it, first way is to level a Gadabout to 20 and the option to sage will be unlocked. The second way is to get the Word of Wisdom tome in Tower of Transcendence, allowing you to change a companion to sage but its consumed after the change. There's two more Word of Wisdom late game, but those previous two ways are the easiest.

Metallic Masher

The first opportunity to fight a metal slime will be the 4th-5th floor of the Tower of Transcendence, north of Alltrades Abbey. Kill one and get the achievement. You can also get it with Liquid Metal Slimes but those are more prone to flee on sight.

Tonnes of Treasure

No secret, continue playing the game and in some moment you will get this achievement. I don't know if Mimics count as chests but there is more that enough chests to open even by avoiding the mimics. Observation: you need to kill at least one of each type of mimic for another achievement, so as soon as you defeat a mimic in a dungeon you are safe to avoid any remaining mimic of that specific dungeon.

Much ado about Money

You don't need to farm specially for this achievement. The gold you'll receive from all Monster Arena ranks (needed for another achievement) will easily cover the needed amount.

Sparkle Spotter

Another achievement you'll get by playing normally and going to pick sparkling spot items on your way to quests. The best moment to go out of your way to get the staggering fortune in seeds from sparkling spots is right after you unlock the Everbird.

Brilliant Battler

Win 1000 fights. You will naturally achieve this number, specially if you play the post game. Don't use Padfoot skill or Holy Protection too much and in not time you will unlock his achievement.
Thanks
I would like to thanks Square Enix and their development team for releasing this remake which show how brilliant old rpgs were in their time, and how fun it can still be today.

A special thanks for Akira Toriyama for creating such charismatic art style which will live ever on the franchise.

Phillip, you will probably reach 1000 battles while leveling to get all skills and going after the monsters to fill the bestiary. If I'm not remembering wrong it was one of the last achievements for me to get too;

Man I just finished the main story (defeated Zoma very easily on my first try without any character death) and only realised I had won ~500 fights. I hope the post-game content can somehow double that amount.
Ramiel  [author] 6 Jun @ 4:14am
Yes, apparently they changed it in the update... Ouch. I spent near a million gold before the patch >.<
Ryufl 5 Jun @ 8:48pm
It seems there was an update to the game that changed the Temple of Trials to only ask for 10 Elfin Elixirs instead of 25. I guess it must've been part of the 1.2 update?
Ramiel  [author] 17 Apr @ 3:22pm
You mean the chest in Patty's tavern? If I'm not wrong you need the deluxe eddition or bought the game pre-release.
draigoon 17 Apr @ 3:00pm
what is the code for the chest in the start up town i downloaded the game on steam but got no code
meyetgain 21 Jan @ 4:46pm
I can confirm you do get the puff-puff trophy if you swap to a male party member.
Ramiel  [author] 18 Jan @ 7:48pm
Forgot to update.
Dani Zoom 18 Jan @ 7:37pm
you need a male char to do Puffection
Tyrax Lightning 17 Jan @ 5:35pm
Update: I thought of the sneaky idea of visiting that gal-haired Cureslime at Alltrades Abbey and seeing if she could do something to the Hero to help, but alas, no go. She can't Customize the Hero at all. Back to the Drawing Board...

Might have to go through the stupid annoying chore of having to waste my time playing a dummy log with a Male Hero and fighting my way to Asham just to get this Achievement over with... but in my Shamelessly Biased Opinion, we shouldn't have to resort to such things just to complete the list of Achievements... :silentslime:
