Standardized Alchemical Procedure Format Used in this Guide
For the purpose of standardization, communication and reproducibility, I will use the following format to represent the alchemy process in the following sections of this guide:

Pour base - Step A - Step B - ... - Pour / Distill / Pour into Mortar

Each step may represent a single or multiple actions of Henry in the game (such as grabbing herbs and putting them into something or grinding and pouring them something, etc.). At the beginning and end of each step, Henry is always in a state where he has no items in his hand, which is the state represented by a short dash (-).

In actual operation, players should ensure that all operations are performed continuously without waiting or counting down, minimizing uncertainty for easy reproduction. This can be achieved by looking at the items required for the next step in advance while performing the previous step and repeatedly pre-entering the keys. Unless otherwise specified, most operations are to look at the item to be operated and press E.
Mechanics of the Alchemy System
*You can skip this section if you just want to make perfect potions and don't want to read a text wall about the mechanics of the alchemy system.*

I. The potion type is determined by the base and the herb type.
e.g. the process Pour wine - Add 1 Chamomile into the cauldron - Add 1 Sage into the cauldron - Pour will yield one weak Chamomile Brew (at alchemy lvl.6 with no perks)

II. The quality of Potions is divided into four levels: weak, normal, strong, and Henry's.
The Henry level needs to be unlocked through the "Secret of Secrets" perk.

III. The quality of the potion produced is inversely related to the number of errors in the process.
Errors in the process include:
  • The heating time of a certain material is too long or too short
  • The herbs that are not fresh enough (dried or low condition) are used
  • The key steps (such as grinding, bellowing, distillation, etc.) are missing or performed incorrectly
  • The wrong amount of materials (adding too many or too few of a certain material, if a certain material is not added at all, it will generally fail directly)
As long as these errors can be avoided, you can use a much more simplified process without strictly following the recipe to make high-quality potions.

Among them, the tolerance of error 1 will be affected by the alchemy level, and other errors do not show similar characteristics. This is also the main reason why the optimal procedures in the next two sections are limited by the alchemy level.

To avoid error 2, at least 1 fresh herb needs to be added to the recipe that needs 3 herbs, and at least 2 fresh herbs (same or different types) need to be added to the recipe that needs 4 or 5 herbs. The threshold of condition has not been specifically tested, and is estimated to be 50, but further experiments are still needed. Most herbs will spoil in 72 hours in the game. As long as the condition does not reach zero, players can make them into 100-condition dried herbs on a drying rack.

Error 1 and Error 2 are both affected by the "Secret of Equilibrium" and "Dark Arts Apprentice". The Secret of Equilibrium at level 1 and 2 can ignore 1/2 errors respectively, and Dark Arts Apprentice when active can ignore 1 error. Therefore, if you want to ignore the impact of the condition of herbs, you can choose to make potions at night or use the perk combination of Secret of Equilibrium + Secret of Matter II. The tolerance provided by Secret of Equilibrium II is basically not useful.

The impact of Error 3 and Error 4 on the quality of the product cannot be ignored by perks. Therefore, it is not possible to optimize the process by reducing steps or materials in order to get Henry's potions.

In the case of no errors in the process, the product of most potions is 3+1*+2** bottles of strong potency. For every error that is not ignored in the refining process, the quality decreases by one level and 1 bottle is reduced. If there are too many errors, the refining will fail.

About "Secret of Secrets": This perk can raise the quality of the potions made by Henry by one level. Henry's potions can only be obtained after this perk is taken. At the same time, even if more mistakes are made after this perk is taken, it seems that weak potions can no longer be made. However, since the purpose of this guide is to make high-quality potions, I did not spend too much energy to explore the specific failure mechanism.

Alchemy Leveling-up Recommendations
Based on the above, I recommend that you collect a lot of herbs when your alchemy level is low, and use the level-6 recipes given below to make a large number of the following recommended potions until you reach level 16 and unlock both "Secret of Matter II" and "Secret of Secrets", and then make various Henry's potions as needed. Having various Henry's potions at hand can greatly improve the game experience. Henry's Fox can increase experience gain by 50% for two days, which is highly recommended.

Chamomile Brew (Recommendation for leveling up)
(level 6 friendly) Pour Wine - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Chamomile into the cauldron - Add 1 Sage into the mortar - Move the cauldron up (X) - Grind and add into the cauldron - Pour

Marigold Decoction (Recommendation for leveling up)
Pour Water - Add 1 Nettle into the cauldron - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Marigold into the mortar - Grind and add into the cauldron - Move the cauldron up (X) - Pour

(level 6 friendly version) Pour Water - Add 1 Nettle into the cauldron - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Marigold into the mortar - Grind and return the mortar (R) - Move the cauldron up (X) - Take the mortar and add to the cauldron - Pour

Lion (Recommendation for making money)
Pour Spiritus - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Sage into the cauldron - Add 2 Mint into the mortar - Move the cauldron up (X) - Grind and add into the cauldron - Pour

(level 6 friendly version) Pour Spiritus - Add 2 Sage into the cauldron - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Mint into the mortar - Grind and return the mortar (R) - Move the cauldron up (X) - Take the mortar and add to the cauldron - Pour

Saviour Schnapps
Pour Wine - Add 1 Nettle into the cauldron - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Belladonna into the mortar - Grind and add into the cauldron - Pour

(level 6 friendly version) Pour Wine - Add 1 Nettle into the cauldron - Move the cauldron down (X) - Add 2 Belladonna into the mortar - Grind and add into the cauldron - Flip the hourglass 2 times (F) - Move the cauldron up (X) - Pour
  • When alchemy reaches a certain level, the tolerance is enough to turn the hourglass only once. When the level is higher, the above recipe can be used, but the specific threshold has not been tested yet.
  • When belladonna is lacking, you can add only 1 belladonna, which will reduce the quality and quantity of the product by 1 (5 strong with Secret of Matters I&II and Secret of Secrets), but the total amount of potions that can be made will be larger.
Optimal Alchemical Procedures for Everything
The following procedures are optimized and tested at alchemy level 24-30, and may not be applicable to lower levels. The perks during the test are Secret of Matter I and II, Dark Arts Apprentice, Secret of Secrets; the test time is daytime, fresh herbs are used, and Dark Arts Apprentice is not active. Unless otherwise specified in brackets, the quality is Henry's, and the quantity is 3+1*+2**=6 bottles.

When flipping the hourglass, is the action sufficient or must i wait the hourglass period?

Ah, seems two pulls on the bellows might be the issue. I switched to one and it's better. I get strong or Henry.

I'm having trouble with buck's blood in this list. I can get "Henry's" on everything else, but not that one, that one comes out normal. I have all perks on my side, but I keep getting normal.

Thank you for writing this, but can you look at Buck's Blood and see if something can be improved?
