Disclaimers
  • This guide only tells how to transfer save files between different Steam versions of Suikoden 1+2 HD Remaster.
  • It does NOT have anything to say about transferring save files from Suikoden HD Remaster between other systems (e.g. PS4, PS5, Xbox, or Switch) to or from Steam or each other.
    • I do not have the copies of the games (or even all of the consoles) to be able to test that. If people can gather information on those fronts, I'd gladly update the guide.
  • It also does NOT say anything about transferring saves from older versions of either Suikoden 1 or 2, such as from the PlayStation 1, 3, or PS Vita.
    • While I think such a thing may be possible, it would require rigorous study of the save files and the variables therein. This guide does not do that. It would be sick though.
Instructions
Alright! This guide talks about moving save files from one Steam version of Suikoden to another. Why, you may ask? Perhaps you did some gaming, but need to move to another computer for whatever reason. Perhaps your friend wants a little leg up. Perhaps you'd rather entirely skip certain sections of the game and start by the time you've got the castles. This guide is for those use cases.

Step 1
Open File Explorer
Go to Suikoden in your library. Click the gear, navigate to Manage > Browse Local Files. That will open your file manager in the Suikoden folder. For reference, this is "C:Program Files/steamapps/common/Suikoden I and II HD Remaster" on Windows and "/home/user/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Suikoden I and II HD Remaster/" on Debian versions.

Step 2
Find the Files
With your file explorer now open, go into 'Save' > '[a series of 10 digits]', then either 'gsd1' or 'gsd2'. Here you'll see files named Data#, with # corresponding to the save slot it fills.
  • I don't yet know a.) What the 10 digits signify (I've seen it 3 ways across 3 accounts) b.) What the 'share' folder is.
(To do: Add a Windows screenshot here.)

Step 3
Copy the files
Copy the desired save files to whatever device or service you're using to transfer files (e.g. a USB stick, Google Drive, a floppy).

Step 4
Do It Again
Roughly, do it in again with the computer you're trying to move the files to. Open Steam, open the file explorer through Steam to get to the Suikoden folder, go into 'Save'>'[10 digits]' and then either 'gsd1' or 'gsd2'. Copy the save files into that folder. Note: You will need to have launched the game at least once on the receiving computer for the 10 digit folder to be generated. (To do: Check if renaming files allows them to just change the save slots they fill, or if that's prevented.)

And there you are, with your new saves (or old?) copied over and ready to play with. From my experimenting, you can even copy files over while the game is running and it will still register and (apparently) not cause problems, though copying without it running will always be a safer bet.
