Pro tip, that I just found out, each time I make one of the gekko races the rewards switches from spare keys to training manuals. So its worth doing them, I had skipped them until really late game, because I had no use for spare keys.

If you do use a key it's not the end of the world. It's just that you don't get the other options until you defeat the boss.
