The Battle of Iwo Jima (Japanese: 柔黃島の戦い) was a battle between Japan and the United States during the Pacific War, which lasted from February 19 to March 26, 1945.
After Germany's unconditional surrender, the Allied forces quickly shifted their operational focus eastward to deal with Japanese fascism with all their strength. Iwo Jima is strategically important. It is located in the Ogasawara Islands, about 1,200 kilometers from Tokyo, and is located at the midpoint between the Mariana Islands and Tokyo, which can improve the effectiveness of air strikes on the Japanese mainland. After occupying the Mariana Islands and breaking through the second line of defense of the Japanese army in the Pacific, the US military was determined to first capture Iwo Jima and seize the forward base for launching a large-scale attack on Japan's "inner defense circle". After nearly a year of preparation, the US military began landing on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. The US military planned to take the island in 5 days. However, under the command of Commander Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the Japanese army stalemates the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions of the elite 5th Amphibious Army of the US Army for 36 days. On March 26, the US military captured the entire island. The Japanese and American armies deployed a total of about 100,000 troops. The Japanese army suffered 23,388 casualties, while the American army suffered 28,686 casualties. This was the first time that the number of casualties of the American army exceeded that of the Japanese army.
After the victory, the US military built the island into an airport for fighter jets and bombers to take off and land, gaining a frontier position for attacking the Japanese mainland, intensifying attacks and bombings on the Japanese mainland, and accelerating Japan's surrender.
