(8) Siege of Paris

After getting across the causeway in Lyon, US 4th Infantry Division and British support forces headed out for Paris. The Allies were not only to flush out the German forces out of the city, but they also received a special order to find an NCO named Volk, who supposedly constructed parts of V2 rockets. Roosevelt announced that Volk can be found in the Parisian metro. On August 25, 1944, after heavy artillery bombardment an army of pots and plates entered the city. The darkest hour has just begun for Paris. The citizens on hearing about the first shots scattered to catacombs, metro tunnels and houses – if there was anything left of their homes. The ones that have witnessed the arrival of Yankee forces informed, to their surprise, that Yanks located their HQs on the ashes of the demolished old town at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Somebody has seen a tank column en route to German positions at the river Seine – it is the beginning of a new frontline.
