GMod Tower: Your First Visit
By Arkive
You've probably seen something about GMod Tower. It is, after all, the top rated collection on the Workshop. For those who don't know what it is or what to do, this guide should get you started.

Pre-Introduction
GMod Tower does not exist anymore! The devs have made it into a standalone game: Tower Unite. You can buy it for $15, and the devs have made it very clear that there will be NO microtransactions or paid DLC!
http://store.steampowered.com/app/394690/
It's in early access as of writing, so don't expect it to have everything at the moment, but it is rapidly growing! You can also discuss TU on the forums[forums.pixeltailgames.com] or tune in every other Friday to see what's been worked on via Twitch[www.twitch.tv]! I've decided to leave this guide up, if only to chronicle the legendary mod (and maybe also because I'm a narcissist).

I've already remade this guide for TU, so check it out if you want to see what's currently available!

I hope to see you all in Tower Unite!
Introduction
This guide is current to the 4/26/2015 version. Information and pictures in this guide may be inaccurate for alternate versions (however, most of it should be accurate regardless of the version). Check the most recent version here: http://www.gmtower.org/index.php?p=changelog

So you found this interesting mod of a mod called GMod Tower. What is it? What do you do? Why are some people on fire? Is that a watermelon? Some of these questions and more will be answered in this guide.

A nice view of the main plaza.

First, however, let me give a brief introduction to GMod Tower itself. GMod Tower is a multiplayer interactive social experience (we'll call it a "game") where you stay at the fictional GMod Tower and do various activities to acquire money. The game is by PixelTail, and the project is managed by a small team led by MacDGuy. Whether you're grinding for an achievement, roleplaying with strangers, or blasting the face off of your infected friend, GMod Tower will be sure to have something for everyone.

The grand GMod Tower.

Free advertisements aside, GMod Tower is a big modification, in size and scope. The required collection is already comprised of about 70 seperate workshop items. Once you get in, there will be so much to do it can be hard to figure out what anything is or how anything works. As such, this guide will help you get acquainted with the basic ins and outs of the gamemode.
Requirements and Rules
If you want to play GMod Tower, you'll need a few things.

The ABSOLUTE Requirements

The Requirements for No Errors
(You'll want these to have all textures, models, etc.)
  • Counter-Strike: Source (mounted onto Garry's Mod)
  • Team Fortress 2 (mounted onto Garry's Mod)

The Servers
GMod Tower runs off of many servers connected to two main servers. Get on one of these to start playing.

Server #1
join.gmtower.org -or- 192.99.203.127:27015

Server #2
join2.gmtower.org -or- 167.114.33.118:27015

As a note, if the server says 64/64 players, you should still be able to join. Launch Garry's Mod first, then join from the multiplayer browser. GMod Tower supports more than 64 players, but can only show up to 64 players off game.

Once you get on the Tower, there are a few simple rules to follow.

Keep these in mind or you might just get banned.

Another thing, the guys that work on this mod did a really great mod, and you can support them by donating. Fork over $15 or more and you can get a few fun bonuses, as shown below.

Is it worth it? You decide!
Your First Steps
GMod Tower is mainly played like any FPS, so you should know those controls already. However, there are a few things to note.

Hold TAB to bring up the main menus. These menus include a list of players, your outfit, the awards, settings, news, and an about tab for more information on GMod Tower.

Players
This list shows the current players online. It can be sorted to show certain selections of these players on the left-hand sidebar. Clicking on a player's bar will give you a few options such as grouping or muting.

Outfit
Change your appearance here! Simply click on the icon of owned items to equip them. Clicking on the red X will unequip any item in that slot.

Awards
There are many awards in GMod Tower. Each is part of a smaller category, and you can switch them out with the sidebar. Each award will show you its requirements as well as your progress towards it. In the upper right corner the GMC (The money of the game. I'm not sure what it stands for, but my best guess is "Garry's Mod Coins") reward for achieving the award. Some awards have a trophy icon next to the GMC reward; this means that the award comes with a trophy or item!

After the TAB menu is the inventory screen. Holding down Q will open this up. Items you have readily available will appear here (if you have too many items, you can store extra ones in your Vault). Equiping certain items to the Hotbar at the top will let you select and use them. Placing cosmetics in the Cosmetics bar will equip them. You can also equip these cosmetics to the Hotbar for the same effect. Notifications may also pop up on the lower right corner. Holding Q will let you click on these. Holding down C lets you open up the action menu, and clicking on an action will perform it.

You can scroll to alter your Third Person camera distance or zoom all the way in to go to First Person view. If you hold down Right Click, then you will be able to move the mouse and examine yourself. If you are in First Person, this will take you to Third Person temporarily.

Lastly is the HUD, and you can probably guess what that all does. The lower left corner displays your current GMC available and your location in the Tower while the lower right corner will display notifications.
The Map
Now that the basic controls are over, we can get into the meat of GMod Tower. There's quite a lot of locales, and therefore quite a lot to do. Luckily, there are maps stationed all around the lobby. Simply walk up to it and click on it like a menu to teleport to a destination if you don't feel like walking there yourself. Clicking is how you interact with any surface interface you will encounter in the Towers.

The map to the lobby.

Each section in the rest of this guide will cover the locales:
  • Plaza
  • Condos
  • Gamemodes
  • Stores
  • Theatre
  • Arcade
  • Casino
  • Nightclub
  • Boardwalk
Plaza
The main plaza is where you will be when you first load into the towers. You will spawn at the transit station and walk out into the central plaza. You can get to any of the other areas from here, and sometimes a piano is free to play in the center. Other than that, there isn't much to say about this area.

Condos
If you don't plan on going anywhere for a while, you can chill out in your condo. There are twelve condos available to rent for free, if there is a slot open. Leaving the Tower Condo area will automatically check you out of your condo if you do not do so manually. Simply speak with (press your use key on) the condo lady at the desk.

The condo lady, constantly on 24 hour service. || My condo, ready for visitors.

Once you get a condo, you can enter it and rearrange the furniture however you want. Your condo will be saved to the server, so whenever and wherever you rent it that condo will always appear as you last left it.

Decorating your condo is very simple. Just hold Q, find the item you want to use in your inventory, and then click and drag it onto a surface. Use the scroll wheel to change its angle. Items will be highlighted green if they can be set down and red if they cannot. Items can be placed on other items to create cool decorations.

The CondOS system, ready to use.

Within each condo is the CondOS system, a simple way to manage everything about your condo. Each button is relatively self explanatory, but I'll go over them anyways just in case.

From left to right, the buttons are as follows...

The Lock button will (surprise) lock your condo. If your condo is unlocked, anyone can enter. If it is locked, only people you designate as your friend can enter.

The Camera button will let you see who is outside your door spamming the doorbell.

The Room Management button lets you see which rooms you have unlocked and how much it is to buy further rooms.

The Guest Management button lets you see who is in your condo as well as kick or ban them from your condo. You can also review this ban list and lift any bans you made.

The Music button lets you set ambient music to play to anyone in the condo.

The Start Party button lets you set up the most awesome party in the history of humanity. Simply select what you want to advertise about the party, pay a small fee, and BAM! Party started. A notice even gets sent out to everyone on the server that you've got a party going on.

The Settings button lets you name your condo, change the CondOS background, and set the doorbell noise. You can also see how many items you have in your condo as well as the item limit.

Keep items in your vault if you have too many.

The vault is a storage compartment in your condo that holds all the items you can't hold in your inventory. You can send items to the vault manually, if you want to. Simply drag items from the vault to an empty inventory slot to take the item out and vice versa. Dragging onto a filled inventory slot will swap the items' positions. If you have the Backpack, you can access the vault anywhere.

Requesting and viewing media is a simple process.

Aside from these things, your condo can also be decorated with interactive technology. One simple one is the TV, which lets you stream from various video sources like YouTube. Adding videos to the TV is simple, simple look at the TV and hold Q. On the lefthand side will be a menu. Click the "Add Media" button to get started. Click on the desired video service or enter the URL directly. After navigating to the video page, the request media button should begin to light up. Click on it and your video will be added to the queue. This is the same process for things like rave/disco balls, radios, the theatre, and the nightclub.
Gamemodes
The gamemode building, host of many minigames.

As of yet, I have not even told you how to get GMC, the money of the game. Now it is time to reveal the secret: you need to play minigames. These are accessible through the Games center. Each gamemode is on a seperate server, and each gamemode will support one group of players at a time. As such, you might need to wait for a gamemode to start if one is already running or needs more players to join the queue. To do this, simply run up to the queue box and smack that use key of yours. You should see your username appear highlighted in its spot in queue. When the gamemode begins, you will automatically join from wherever you are (assuming that there are slots available, since there normally are). After this, the players vote on the map to play and begin.

There are many unique gamemodes to play. They are, alphabetically...

Ball Race is a gamemode that plays like Super Monkey Ball. You control your character trapped in a sphere (or other shape, if you so choose). Get to the end of the level and collect as many bananas as you can!

Minigolf is just as it sounds. Play eighteen holes on one of the courses provided. Get in the hole with as few strokes as possible and try to get the lowest score!

PVP Battle is an arcade FPS run n' gun free-for-all! If it moves, shoot it! Get more kills than everyone else to win. Get some help with ammo and health pickups as well as various powerups on the maps.

Source Karts is a high speed go-kart action race. Probably inspired by Mario Kart, this gamemode requires good drifts, smart item usage, and raw speed to win. Race on three courses, then fight to the death in the kart arena!

Ultimate Chimera Hunt is a one-versus-all battle to the death! One person is selected to be the powerful Chimera while the rest are drafted as pigmasks. If you are the Chimera, kill all the pigmasks to win. If you are a pigmask, poke the button on the Chimera's back to stop it. Just be quick; if time runs out, everyone loses!

Virus is a FPS stolen straight from Timesplitters 2 where one random person is infected with a deadly virus. This man must try and spread the virus through touch, but the remaining survivors have an arsenal of weapons to protect them. Be careful, as the infected can respawn. Survive long enough, and the survivors will win. If everyone is infected, though, the infected win.

Zombie Massacre is a top-down shoot em' up where you and your friends must fight hoards of zombies. You can pick up lots of weapons and use special abilities to help. Did your friend die? No problem, just poke his tombstone to bring him back! Beware, though, once the week is over the real battle begins...
Stores
Once you have your hard-earned GMC, you can spend it in the stores for various items. Each store holds its own selection of things, and most are self explanatory.

Central Circuit has all the electrical things your condo could need. From TVs to Radios, this store has anything running on volts.

The Smoothies stand might not be spectacular in appearence, but when it comes to ingredients for your blender you will never find a better seller.

We all love music, right? If it plays a note, you can probably find it here. From the disco ball to the sought-after piano, this store is in tune to any musical needs.

Every condo needs furniture, and no place carries a wider variety of quality decorations. Whether you need some books, a bed, some walls, or even a few posters, Sweet Suite has it all.

If you don't want to look like a bum, you're going to need some nice threads. Hats, glasses, clothes, all of these and more are available at Tower Outfitters.

Everyone needs a little something for their inner kid. This store has all manner of knicknacks and pets, so you too can get a plush fox to sleep with or adopt a pet watermelon.
Theatre
The theatre building, awaiting your choice of movie.

The theatre is basically a public TV set. Gather your friends, enter one of the two viewing rooms, and watch some YouTube together. If you don't like the current video, you can try to vote to skip it. Thumbs up some queued videos to watch them sooner, and add your own videos to the queue. If you want to, there's a gameroom just outside the first viewing room to play some awesome flash games.

Head to the gameroom for some arcade fun!
Arcade
The arcade building, currently under construction.

Back in Lobby 1, the arcade was a place where you could hang out, play some flash games, do a little bit of Blockles (definitely not Tetris), play some Tic-Tac-Toe, and engage in some hardcore trivia. Most of these moved, such as the flash games and Blockles to the Theatre and Tic-Tac-Toe to the Games Port. What will happen to the new Arcade? MacDGuy has a few things planned for it, which you can find on the Trello page here: https://trello.com/b/CPLCVPCn/gmtower. As for Trivia? The wiring to that got fried back in Lobby 1, and stopped working. While MacDGuy fixes all the circuits, we won't be able to do that. Hopefully soon, however, the Trivia will be back in action!
Casino
The casino and nightclub awaiting partygoers. || Get ready to say bye to your GMC.

The casino is a place where players can take their hard-earned GMC and waste it in rigged gambling games. It's fun, though, so we do it anyways. In the casino there are four major gambling stations: the slot machines, the video poker machines, the Spin-to-Win wheels, and poker tables. Each one is akin to its bretheren. To play poker, however, you're going to need to buy some poker chips from the casino lady.

Want to duel? Get ready to fight to the death out there.

In the back of the casino is where those wishing for one-on-one combat hang out. Buy some duel equipment and challenge someone to a fight to the death (for GMC, of course). Winner takes all, no one leaves until someone drops dead.
Nightclub
Get ready to get down.

The nightclub is where you can go to dance with friends, listen to awesome music, get drunk, and pretend it's actually night. Request some music, get on the floor, and watch as the dynamic lights actually respond to the music being played. Or, if dancing isn't your style, you can always visit the bar to get some alcoholic beverages. Whether it's just a drink for yourself or a keg for a party, the bar lady has everything. Just don't drink yourself to death.
Boardwalk
The boardwalk has a couple nice attractions for relaxing.

Once you've had some rigourous fun, you can head down to the boardwalk to unwind and enjoy the ocean breeze. Hop on the ferris wheel with a friend and gaze out to the ocean. Take a dip in the lazy river or swim with the fish. Slide down the waterslide in an innertube. Just relax in a beach chair. The boardwalk is a prime spot for relaxation.
Other
While the locales are nice, there are a few things that aren't really specific to a place. Here I give to you anything that might not be elsewhere.

Playing the piano is something most players find fun, if they can get their hands on one.

The playable piano is an item available at Songbirds for 15,000 GMC. For those that don't know, this is a more expensive item. As such, it can be hard to get. Once obtained, though, your parties will be spectacular. The only thing better than good TV shows and beer is a playable piano. Sometimes one will be available in the main plaza to try out. Playing one is as simple as pressing the keys on a keyboard. This is because you play the piano by literally pressing the keys on your keyboard. Hitting Control will switch between simple and advanced layouts. The advanced layout uses the shift key to give the player access to a larger range of notes. Press Space and you will have a large assortment of sheet music to play off of; if you don't like what they have, you can find or compose your own homebrew pieces! Once you've finished your playing, simply hit TAB to hop off and let another player take the keys.

This machine won't steal your GMC.

Vending machines can be found all over the Lobby. From these machines you can get a variety of size altering potions as well as model modifying items.

What're ya buyin'?

The wandering merchant is a mysterious fellow. He carries the merchandise no other store would touch. His wares are varied and unique. He's always willing to part with them for a price - if you can find him, that is.
One Last Note
You've seen this part at the end of everything. You know, the part where I say "Thank you for reading my guide" and all that jazz. Just because I know you know the drill doesn't mean I won't do it, though. So, here we go again: Thanks for bearing with my walls of text! I hope that you learned something helpful about this amazing game. Give the guide a rating and shoot a comment, whether it be about something I did right or wrong, if it be to point out a grammatical error (Please do this one. I hate it when I overlook something grammatical.), or even just to say "Hi!" Again, I appreciate you reading my guide. Rate, comment, and play this really well made mod of a mod.

GMod Tower had a good run, and it will be sad to see it go. This is not the end of a good thing, but the beginning of something better. I hope to see you all in Tower Unite!

Unfortunately, this doesn't exist anymore. The devs went ahead and made it standalone as Tower Unite. It's still early in development, but it's got the same heart that GMod Tower had. I'd recommend it, but you may want to wait until it's got more features before buying it. You buy TU here for $15: http://store.steampowered.com/app/394690/

@Lerbirax: The wandering merchant is never in the same place, but a stroll around the main lobby should be enough to find him.

@[ELGN]Zer0: The gamemode would be listed under "GMod Tower," but you could also add the servers to your favorites and access them from there if you can't find it on the main browser.
