Probably, I will fix some wrong written stuff because of my English. or some new DLCs BUT : Please always message me about my mistakes.

11.03.2015 - Added more information in Weapons sub-title. Started to write about Leaders sub-title. Adden Libby info about Blood Angels in Melee Chapter by Chapter.

21.03.2015 Created the Genestealer guide. Changed the pictures of each chapter in chapter advertisment. Changed my ideas about Salamander melee. Changed leaders sub-title into how to desing your squads and created a space for more information down there.

28.03.2015 Fixed the wrong written info about Genestealers. And added how to use ranged and heavy terminators for a melee squad.

08.06.2015 Added the new melee weapon variants. Also, created the new statistics sub-title.
Why to Choose Melee Insted of Vanillia Ranged?
Because you are a Space Marine in a Tactical Dreadnought armor, and you shall know no fear! Seriously, that armor gives you big responsibilitys. If you are new to Warhammer 40K, you should start so check some stuff.

In the other hand, melee is the heart of the aciton. Also, the hardest and the most risky way to play eather. You may need to melee even if you are playing with Ultramarines. So its good to read this guide.
Fundemental Laws of Melee Combat
1-) Genestealers are always better than you in melee combat. There is a very thin line between foolishness and heroisim. Even if you play with melee based Terminators, you should be very carefull about melee.

2-) If you hit a Genestraler it dies. But if you missed, and if the Genestealer hits you, you will die. Just like some traitors said : ''Kill or be killed!''

3-) Some Genestealers hit points starts from 1 and can increase untill 4. Every melee attack means 1 hit point. That means, you must hit 3 times for a 3 hit point Brood Lord. Your Terminators will always have 1 hit point AND NO, Stormshields doesn't increase that.

4-) Toughness is more important than attack skill. I will try to explain it in Statistics sub-title.

5-) If a Genestealer or your Terminator turns his left, right or back side and hitted by a melee attack, it will die without question. So, you will always cover your back while you are in Space Hulk. And do not fear to hit a Genestealer if it's in one of these positions.

6-) 90% chance to hit sounds high right? No it isn't actually. You have a bigger chance to loose that 10% in melee combat. Specially if you are in a tight and long coridoor, you might have to fight 4 or even 6 Genestealers and that 10% is a big risk. Should you fear to hit an alone Genestealer in melee? Nope! I'm just saying, try to save your games as often as you can. And save them like : '' I would like to start from here if my head gets in trouble. ''

7-) Some Genestealers might attack you a few times if it is still alive. That depends on AP. But it won't be more than 3 I think.
Melee Combat Chapter by Chapter
BLOOD ANGELS

They are the versitale chapter of Space Hulk. They can have melee specialists and they will look very cool. However, they do not start with any bonuses about melee. However, they have pretty amazing Librarians and probably the best of them. So, if you are planing to play hard melee Space Vampires, you should get a Sergant and 2 or 3 melee specialsts. It will be good for you to carry one ranged specialist to cover your back.

ULTRAMARINES

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA!!! Sorry, I can't say I like Ultrasmurfs. Just don't melee, okay? They have -5% to hit in melee both attack or defence. You can upgrade your Sergant or Librariran to melee to protect your Smurfs from harm. Othervise, your Terminators will have a place at the right side of our Emperor.

SPACE WOLVES

Best melee chapter without question. They have +5% chance to hit in melee, both attack or defence. They only have melee specialsts and can equip awsome Frostaxes later on. I will explain why it is awsome in Weapons subtitle. Your Terminators can take care them selfs so you don't really have to be lead by a Sergant, Librarian ( I mean Rune Pierst) is a good option and will make your squad more colourful and can save your gameplay from monotone.

However, your Space Puppys will have very hard times in the beginings. Untill you unlock your melee toys, you will have to roll out with -5% ranged bolters. Powerfists are not as amazing as in Dawn of War II here. You might have a lot of hugs between Genestealers and your Terminators. Just try to be patient.

IMPERIAL FISTS

They have a very good potential for melee. Every Terminator will have +10% defence bonus to hit. That means a bonus on Toughness! How awsome! I suggest you to use the same menu for Blood Angels. Or, you can go full ranged, increase toughness to 3 and roll out. They can take care them selfs. They only have Sergants to lead them so your squads won't be so colourful.

SALAMANDERS

Salamanders are fine. They don't have any kind of weakness or bonus for melee. Their passive fire proof seems cool but it won't help you in melee, trust me. Meanwhile, they are less effective in melee combat since they can carry max. 2 melee specialist. I do not suggest you to go hard melee as a Salamander because it won't work. Also, it will effect the rest of the squad eather since you will have less fire power than you actually need.
Melee Weapons
Power Fist

Your starting weapon. Exeption for Librarians, every Terminator starts with this weapon. It gives you 10% bonus to hit while attacking but that is it. So, if you are not a ranged specialsit, it is not wise to go with this weapon. Just try to change it as soon as you can. In normal conditions, power fists are awsome but in this game, for the sake of balance and game play, it ate a very big nerf. So just do not underrestimate it, okay?

Chainfist

It looks so similar to power fist and actually it really is. It gives you the 10% attack bonus eather. The only difference between power fist is that you can open broken doors with it. What is the real advantige of this? Well, if you don't want to shoot with brust fire and waste 4 bullets and gain a lot of heat, this might be useful. You will change this weapon with claws or Hammers later I know, but your Heavy Terminator can only upgrade to this weapon in melee. If you see a broken door, call your Heavy Terminator. He will gladly say ; '' Step a side, I got this... ''

Power Sword

Power Swords are symbolic weapons for your leaders. They generally provide you defensive bonuses like 20% and can go untill 30 - 35%. This is why your Sergants can be ordered to protect your Terminators. They can stay alive much easyer. And they unlock too early so you won't have too much trouble.

Here is a tip for you, there is a 20% attack bonus variant in your wargear. Don't use it. It may work one or even a few times but staying alive when the turn is in the hands of Genestealers is far important. Just be patient untill you unlock some stuff cooler, okay brother?

Ingelldina
gives + 20% weapon skill but no defensive buff for Librarians. For Sergants ; it gives you + 30% defence. Ignore this weapon for Librarian.
Mordian
Librarian Power Sword gives you + 30% defence. Pretty Sweat.
Surestrike
Power Sword of Sergant gives you + 20% weapon skill. Ignore this weapon.

Frost Axe ( Only for Space Wolves )

Now this weapon is cool. It allows you to keep your bolter and shoot Genestealers from a safe distance. If your head gets in trobule, the Frost Axe will give you amazing amouts of defence bonus. It starts from 20% and can go to 30% (Thanks to last update, now we have different variants of our favorite weapons) That means, your all Terminators are now mini - Sergants.

How you can use this toy? You can keep one of your Terminators with bolter and order him to cover your back while your other Terminators smashing Xenos. If one of them gets too close, he will probably kill him.

Wormkiller
This Weapon gives you + 30% weapon skill. Pretty offensive. But since our main object is to stay alive, I suggest you to ignore this weapon.
Giantkiller
This weapon gives you + 35% defence. In my opinion, best melee weapon in the whole game. If you can give all 3 of your melee Termies these, they will all become durable like Sergants!

Lightning Claws

Now we really start to talk about melee. Look, the Claws are giving you some cool bonuses, both offense and defence, something like 20%, but the main and very important problem about the claws is that they unlock just too early. Your Terminator won't be ready at level 5 to go hearth of battle. There are too much danger for them. However, there are some better variants of Lightning Claws later on so you can roll out with them. In the end, I suggest you to stay away from them untill you make your Toughnes and attack skill something like 4 or 5. Toughnes as 5 sounds high but you can risk with keeping it at 4. Make your chooice.

Skoll
This claw is only avaible for Sergants of Space Wolves. If gives you + 35% defence. Codex Astartes supports this weapon.
Razor
This weapon gives you + 30% weapon skill. I suggest you to ignore this weapon and stick with the normal Claws untill you unlock second varian of the Claws.
The Other Claw
I will point here later.

Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield

Do I even have to say something? The Thunder Hamemr and Storm Shield are the best melee weapons in game. the Hammer gives you 20% attack bonus and the Shield give you 30% defence bonus at least. Now you can go to hearth of battle without fear, still that doesn't garanties your immortility. But, at least you won't have any problem with basic Genestealers. When you unlock these two, you shouldn't go back to other ones unless you need Frost Axe for situatinal problems.

Now the variants of these weapons has a problem. The Thundercrack says + 20% ATK and + 30% DEF but it also says this weapon made for offense. Also, the Chrusher says + 20% ATK and + 25% DEF and even with that it say this weapon is made for defence. This part might be broken so I suggest you to stick with normal Hammer and Shield.
How to Desing My Statistics?
Your statistics will shape your Termies. There are a few statics that we will focus. But first of all ;

Toughness
The most important thing for a melee Termie. It effects the chance to be hitten by a Genestealer. The more you increase toughness, the less your Termie dies. Too basic. It must be your primary statistic.

Ofcource, if your Termies has 2 Agility or 2 Ballistic Skill, you can sacriface some points here. But othervise, always focus Toughness.

Also, do not try to make any of your statistics 6. Really, you will suffer from all other statistics.

Weapon Skill
This increases your chance to hit a Genestealer. After Toughness, you should focus here.

Ballistic Skill
Untill your Termies unlocks tasty weapons, you must shoot some Genestealers. For that very reason, you should increase your Ballistic Skill to 3, which is enough for a normal Termie.

Agility
Your Terminators can have very critical times about their AP. So, I suggest you to increasing ypur Agility to 4.

Perception
Ignore.

Willpower
It only works for Librarians. Othervise, specially ignore this one. '' But I increased it to 5 already! '' AHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

A mature Teriminators statistics are like 5 Toughness / 5 Weapon Skill / 3 Ballistic / 4 Agility.
How to Create Your Squads?
LEADER OPTIONS
Exept Imperial Fists, you have 2 options; a Sergant or a Librarian ( Rune Pierist for Space Wolves). Imperial Fists can only lead by a Sergant. I know this guide is about melee and some informations that I will give are not about melee, but there are some stuff that you may need to know.

Sergant

Sergant is more like a real warrior or a true hero who saves the day. He can kill 3 or even 4 times of a regular Terminator kills in a single mission. He can fight very amazing, my Imperial Fist Sergant was able to hit a basic Genestealer with 100% chance when he was only level V ! ( Learn Roman numbers, it's not too hard. ) He can equip every kind of cool melee weapon exept for Chainfist and a big exept for Ultramarines Sergant since he is only able to equip Power Sword and its variants. Do not fear to upgrade him for melee even if you play full ranged. It is not over yet, he can equip combi-plasmas which might be awsome. I say might be because I had no chance to use one of them. I played a lot of Librarian. So, if you want to add some info here, please send me a message. EDIT : THEY ARE GOOD, USE THEM.

Here are the drawbacks; Sergants only support with passive AP bonus which comes to you every one of two turns. So, you may not able to have the bonus AP at the right time. And this is his only support ability. He can smash through Genestealers but can not help his other troops at the same time. So, you can sometimes miss the abilitys of a Librarian.

Librarian ( Rune Pierist for Space Wolves )

I was going to put my primary Librarian picture here but it was a Space Puppy eather. I wanted to make guide more colorful so I put a Space Vampire Librarian here.

Librarians are your supportive leaders. Their primary object is to help tour Terminators. They have a lot of cool abilitys. They can give a bonus AP whenever you want. Or they can create barriers between your Terminators and Genestealers.Or can kill 7 - 8 Genestealers in a single Psychic Storm. Also, some of these abilitys do not requare line of sight. So, you can kill Genestealers who are too far away, or if they are insade of air ducts, or if there is a wall between you and them. Pretty effective. Also, the Blood Angel variant of Librarians do have more abilitys, and can use them much earlyer.

Here are the drawbacks ; the Librarian is actually another ranged Terminator who can equip some power weapons. So in combat, he can become as effective much as a Space Puppy who carrys a Frost Axe. He can not equip epic melee wargears like the Sergant and can not equip any kind of combi-weapons.

OUR INFANTRY
Our infantry build depends on your leader selection. But here are a few things you may need to know;

I WILL KILL YOU IF YOU BRING A RANGED TERMINATOR WITH YOU Seriously, carriying a ranged Terminator sucks! Do you worry about Genestealer flank behind you? I hope you are. Cover one Terminator behing you so he tanks the flanks.

Now forget the last paragraph and listen to me. Keep one Termie to cover your back. Ranged or melee doesn't that matter.

Heavy Terminator is Your Plan B If you are sick of killing endless spawms, long corridoors filled with Genestealers, or just can't hold every line with your Terminators, use your Heavy Flamer or Assault Cannon as a solution. Also, increase your Heavy Terminators toughnes to protect him from harm.

And your melee Terminators, yeah. I'm gonna add some info here later.
Who Are Those Dammned Exnos?
Let's talk about the stuff that we gonna smash. Genestealers are the special kommando units for Tyranid Race. They are deadly in melee combat and no funny buisness eather. They can tear apart pretty much every kind of armor. Also, since they are not too big, they are fitting the corridors of Space Hulk. The corridoors are thight, long and dark. You are going to face with them toe to toe. Thankfully, they didn't give any ranged weapons for Genestealers ( Exept Flesh Hook maybe ) so we have less problem. Nearly all Genestealers have 6 AP and they do not use an extra AP on corners like you ( I mean us ).

I would like to put some pictures of each Genestealer but since you can see their names by moving mouse on them, I don't think putting pictures is a must.

Rending Claw Genestealer
The most basic Genestealer in the whole game. There isn't something you really need to know.

Scything Talon Genestealer
It moves faster than a regular Genestealer. Much harder to hit and much harder to defend eather. It can be a problem if you are level 3 or 4 but it treaths less if you level to 5 and more. It's all about toughness.

Extended Carapice Genestealer / Broodlord
A Genestelaer who has 1 more hit point. 1 + 1 = 2 Means you need to hit it twice. Extended Carapice is not a new kind of Genestealer, it is like an armor for Tyranids. The armor can be used by any king of Genestealers and yes even Broodlords.. The armor doesn't provide anything but an extra hit point.

Flesh Hook Genestealer
Here we start to talk about annoying stuff. This Exno throws a few hook through your Terminator and drives him to it self! Yes they can pull armors which are heavyer than 500 kg ( Half weight of a hatch-bag car for non-metric system educated Brothers ) which sounds odd. Do you know what? It actually is.

Whatever, this dude can get your Terminator into trouble so fast. Your Terminator can be flanked by the other Exnos later eather. The hook might not catch you 100% but if not, the Genestealer can try his luck again and again untill its AP is over. Every throw = 1 AP. The Flesh Hooked Terminator cancels his overwatch eather. Thankfully, it doesn't have any more threat in melee for us. The dangerous part starts after the flesh hook however.

Acid Maw Genestealer
One of the most dangerous Genestealers. Just try to not fight with it in melee combat or even in close ranges if possible. It will explode in death which does 1 hp damage to everything around it, including his own friends and your troops. The explotion effect can be in the square that it died or can effect next squares. The acid proof upgrade can be seen as a solution but I think it is bugged or broken because it didn't worked well. I suggest you to shoot them down from ranged but you can try your luck in melee eather. Just save your game before an attack.

Feeder Tendril Genestealer
Now this one is the most annoying Genestealer of the whole game. It has a special attack which it trys to vacum your brain ( and does ). It decreases your AP and your toughness eather! The effect lasts for only one turn. The special attack doesn't make any damage but the danger starts after the special attack. You can face a lot of Genestealers and need to smash them down one by one with low toughness. Your Terminator can die in high possibility but can survive eather. Just try to rest and guard him for one turn and then move on.

Broodlord
Big, heavy, and tough. They start with 3 hp and can increase it 4 with Extended Carapice. But they will always have 4 AP which makes them slower and easyer your fall back. They do not take any damage from flamers but the can not walk on fire. The Broodlords are the hardest thing to kill in Space Hulk specially in melee. They are much harder to hit in melee and much harder to defend eather. You may have a high number of Broodlords coming to you in a single coridoor. The number increases with your game level ( I mean normal, hard, impo.ssible, ... ). Save your game before a fight with a Broodlord.

@Canadian_Zac If I am not wrong with your regular power sword info, it has +20% DEFENCE bonus with addition of 17% at total 37%. If this is it, go with that. But, if that regular power sword give +20% ATTACK bonus, it will be useless with that combination. Remember, you shouldn't focus on offence, your main mission is to survive in that ship. Always get the highest amount of defence. Improve your offence from your statistics, you won't need too much of that.

Question: Which is better for defensive melee for a seargent. A Regular (+20) Power Sword with a +17 to hit from the bonus mission loot equipment, or the +30 Defensive Power Sword. I'm thinking it would be the regular with +17, since that would be +37 total.

Fun thing is, this is the only space hulk game where the Thunder Hammer doesn't equal death for the Terminators. I have the board game, and Seargent Gideon (The one with the Thunder Hammer) rarely kills more than 2 in a row before he gets killed, even if he's on guard, which isn't in this game :-(, and this isn't just limited to me, i've seen other people play the board game, and the original video game, which was just a computer version of the board game. But in Ascention, Thunder Hammers actually work.

Nice guide. Thanks

I found this really helpful and your English is pretty good too. Much better than those who often criticise, could speak your language, I'm betting. Really appreciated the explanation of how attack and defence actually works. I picked up a PS upgrade of 10% to hit and wasn't sure what that meant. I'm guessing, based on your guide, that it's just attack, so I assume that the + Defence variant is better. Thanks for writing. keep up the good work.

Thanks for this great read :D

Your English could be better, but it's far from non-understandable ^^. Keep writing the guide, it's an interesting read!

I get you. When I wanna do a hero/hardcore run, I'll use this guide.
firatwithin  [author] 24 Mar, 2015 @ 10:59am
@MrGodroy Playing ranged seems too easy for me. Maybe after getting combi-weapons it starts to be fun. Ranged decreases your stress and rage. But, no need for heroisim means no need for Astartes you know. :)
Kim Jong-Floyd 23 Mar, 2015 @ 8:34pm
Your English isn't too bad. Nice guide, but TBH, I always just cheese ranged anyway. Call me a pussy, but yeah.
