Opening
As the newest world power on the international stage, Japan seemed to follow their own military philosophy. This can be blamed both on economic and cultural differences of the time. After establishing their dominance in East Asia in the early 1900's and also during World War 1, Japan continued to press their agenda. Despite all of their expansionism, however, they were slightly behind other nations in the small arms field, and relied heavily upon tactics to achieve victory. That being said, in Assault Squad 2, they still have very reliable weapons, even if there isn't much of a variety.
Rifles
Type 99

Full Name: Type 99 Rifle Arisaka
Max Range: 70m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Weight: 4.6 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried by: Recruits (x6), Regular Infantry (x5), Assault Infantry (x3), Homeland Fury (x2), AT Riflegrenade Squad (x4)
The standard rifle for the Imperial Japanese Army, the Type 99 is a bolt-action rifle that yields high accuracy at the cost of a very slow rate of fire. Due to that slow rate of fire, these weapons are best used in numbers, or at longer ranges where they can make the most of their accuracy. However, if it must be used at close range, one shot will kill most enemy infantry immediately.

Type 2

Full Name: Type 2 Rifle Arisaka
Max Range: 70m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Weight: 4.6 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried By: Paratroopers (x6), Marine Paratroopers (x7), Banzai! (x18)
The Type 2 rifle is a variant of the Type 99, and is apparently identical to it in all matters in game. The real world difference is that it was easy to break down and issued to Paratroopers. If anyone finds out about any differences between the two we would be happy to hear about it.

Type 99 Sniper

Full Name: Type 99 Rifle Arisaka Sniper
Max Range: 100m
Accuracy: Very High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Weight: 4.6 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried By: Sniper (x1)
The Type 99 Sniper is the most accurate, and in the hands of the right soldier, the most lethal of all the Japanese rifles. The rate of fire for the Type 99 Sniper is identical to the Type 99, however, all sniper rifles require that the soldier take the time to acquire aim at longer ranges, making the actual time between most shots very long. In close ranges though, sniper rifles can fire at the same rate as any bolt action, meaning that the AI does not have to wait to acquire a target.
SMG
MP 28

Full Name: Maschinenpistole 28/II.
Max Range: 50m
Accuracy: Below Average
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 3.0 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 30
Weight: 4.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: Recruits (x2), Homeland Fury (x4)
An older German made weapon, the MP 28 was acquired by the Japanese because the Japanese did not delve into SMG weapon designs until much later than most other nations. As a weapon it deals moderate damage but has a lower rate of fire for SMGs, and also has less accuracy than newer models.

MP 28 (Large Magazine)

Full Name: Maschinenpistole 28/II.
Max Range: 50m
Accuracy: Below Average
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 3.50 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 50
Weight: 4.7 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: SNLF (x2), Mechanized SNLF (x2)
This weapon is identical to the other MP28, except for the fact that it has a larger magazine. It is only issued to the SNLF AT soldiers and is a decent weapon in their hands, but still has the same problems as the original.

Type 100

Full Name: Type 100 Submachine Gun Nambu
Max Range: 50m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 3.0 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 30
Weight: 4.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: Regular Infantry (x2), Assault Infantry (x5), Kamikazes (x5), AT Team (x2), Flamethrower Support Inf (x1), Radio Operator (x3), Engineers (x4), Mine Disposal (x2), Tank Commander
The Type 100 SMG was by far the most common SMG used by the Japanese during the war. It is a good weapon with a high rate of fire, and decent sustained accuracy.

Type 2

Full Name: Type 2 Submachine Gun Nambu Experimental
Max Range: 50m
Accuracy: Above Average
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 3.75 second
Ammo Capacity: 50
Weight: 4.7 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: SNLF (x4), Mechanized SNLF (x6)
The Type 2 was an experimental weapon design and was hardly ever seen in use on the battlefield by any allied nation during the war. The gun has an interesting design and large magazine, which allows its high rate of fire to land a fairly accurate stream of bullets on a target. The fact that this is usually only issued to the SNLF compounds this weapon's effectiveness.
Machine Guns
Type 99

Full Name: Type 99 Light Machine Gun
Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Low
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 3.0 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 30
Weight: 12.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried By:Machine Gun Infantry (x1), Paratroopers (X2), SNLF (x2), Homeland Fury (x4), Marine Paratroopers(x2), Vehicles
As the only light machine gun available to the Japanese, the Type 99 performs about as well as other similar weapons. However, it lacks the power or rate of fire that other machine guns are capable of, and as such falls short when mounted on vehicles or in elite squads. Nevertheless, it is still a machine gun, and is still a lethal weapon.
Anti-Tank Weapons
Type 97

Full Name: Type 97 20-mm Antitank Rifle
Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Above Average
Rate of Fire: Moderate
Reload Time: 7.0 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 7
Armor Penetration:
-10m: 37mm
-50m: 19mm
-80m: 14mm
Weight: 18.7 kg
Effective Range:
Carried By: AT Rifle Infantry
The Type 97 is one of the better AT rifles in the game, but still cannot take down medium armor. Versus light vehicles or soft targets though, this weapon excels in its role.

Type 4

Full Name: Type 4 70-mm AT Rocket Launcher (Experimental Type 4)
Max Range: 35m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Single Shot
Reload Time: 5.0 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 1
Armor Penetration: 140
Weight: 8.9 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: SNLF (x2), Mechanized SNLF (x2), AT Infantry (x1), Marine Paratroopers (x1)
The Type 4 RPG is the Japanese infantryman's answer to enemy armor. While it isn't the best AT weapon in the game by far, it does perform slightly better than the Bazooka in damage and speed.

Type 99 AT Rifle Grenade

Full Name: Type 99 Rifle Arisaka with attached Type 2 Rifle Grenade Launcher
Max Range: 45m
Accuracy: Low
Rate of Fire: Single Shot
Reload Time: 15.50 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 1
Armor Penetration: 90mm
Weight: 6 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: AT-Riflegrenade Squad (x2)
The AT Riflegrenade is probably one of the most interesting and useful weapons in all of Assault Squad. Similar to the British EM-3, the projectile travels in a slow arc towards whatever it gets shot at. This means that it will often be coming down on top of its intended target, and the AT charge will be hitting one of the weaker parts of the tanks hull. Unfortunately, you have to have considerable range or have an elevation advantage to hit the top armor, and given those circumstances, the accuracy on the AT Riflegrenade is dramatically decreased. On top of that, the AT Riflegrenade is the slowest AT projectile in the game, making it that much harder to hit moving targets. Nevertheless, the AT Riflegrenade is very useful against vehicles and also any infantry that are unlucky enough to get caught in its blast (which is only slightly smaller than the British Riflegrenade).
Other Small Arms
Type 14 Nambu Pistol

Full Name: Type 14 Nambu
Max Range: 40m
Damage;
0~2m - 130 HP
Accuracy: Above Average
Rate of Fire: Semi-Automatic
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 8
Weight: 1.1 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried by: Tank Crew, Officer
The Nambu pistol is the only pistol available to the Japanese in Assault Squad 2. As a weapon, it performs similarly to other sidearms available to the other factions.

Flamethrower

Full Name: Type 93 / Type 100 Flamethrower
Max Range: 25m
Accuracy: Precise
Rate of Fire: Extremely Fast
Reload Time: Manual
Ammo Capacity: 80
Weight:
-Flamethrower: 1 kg
-Fuel Tank: 83 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: Flamethrower Infantry
The Flamethrower is a brutally effective assault weapon most commonly used to flush enemy soldiers out of a defensive position. The short range means you need to get very close, which means you will have to either sneak your way up to your target, or advance under the cover of suppressing fire. Either way, the flamethrower does devastating damage to any infantry it touches, but its uses can go beyond killing enemy infantry. Fire weapons can be used to clear trees and bushes away, depriving the enemy of cover, burn entire buildings down, and sustained application of fire to a vehicles engine can destroy even the heaviest of tanks. When you eventually run out of fuel, you must manually refuel the fuel tank. Since ammo trucks don't carry fuel tanks and they also don't auto-reload it for you, equip the gas tank (shown above) by right clicking it in your inventory. Once it is equipped you can walk up to almost anything that contains fuel in it, like vehicles or a fuel drum. Once you are done, you can reequip your flamethrower and go burn more stuff down. Enjoy.

Flare Pistol

Full Name: N/A
Max Range: 60m
Accuracy: Very Very Low
Rate of Fire: Extremely Fast
Reload Time: 26 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Effective Range: Medium
Weight:
-Flare Pistol: 1.1 kg
-Radio Pack: 0.7 kg
Carried By: Radio Operator
The flare pistol allows the soldier firing it to call down a small volley of artillery fire. The flare projectile is parabolic, so you can fire it over obstacles and cover between you and your target. Although the accuracy of this weapon is low, the artillery fire that rains down shortly afterwards more than makes up for it, allowing the high spread to work to your benefit. Upon reloading, the soldier will take ammo out of the radio pack to prepare another volley.
Appendix A, Soldier Stats
A Note On Accuracy
During the course of these guides, we have been able to determine that there are quite a few different factors that go into determining accuracy, and this probably applies to vehicles as well. Each weapon in Assault Squad 2 has different values of each of these, which all contribute to the overall accuracy of a weapon. Additionally, accuracy will slightly increase the more you fire at a given target.
  • Base accuracy: The size of the circle before you shoot.
  • Recoil: How big the circle grows after you shoot a round. Upon a closer look it appears that recoil is slightly different on a shot-per-shot basis.
  • Recovery: How long it takes for the circle to go back to normal after a shot, this is what determines sustained accuracy.

Appendix B, Weapon Comparisons
The weapons listed in this section are ordered from highest rate of fire, to lowest. All the rating numbers are in ascending order (worst is lowest), and they are also relative to eachother. For example, the difference in damage between the Johnson and DeLisle is very small, but the difference from the various bolt actions to the M1A1 is pretty significant. These tables are here to give you a general idea of what you're dealing with when it comes to these weapons.

Is there really a sword in the game? I can't launch my MOWAS 2 right now because of that bug everyone has, but if there really is a sword I'll add it once I eventually get back into the game.

@wasanbon
Are you sure? What was your test criteria? Ficus and I tested it pretty thoroughly and didn't notice any difference in damage at any ranges.
