Getting the modification files
First you have to get the modification files. You are looking for something called PTMu v1.79. It's available in 7zip format so it's a good idea to get 7zip first[www.7-zip.org].

Now you need the mod file. You can get it from http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=42284 website or straight from author's webpage[polinii.com]. It's a small archive of around 1MB. Be aware though it will unpack to around 100MB (physics files are stored in text format files which are easy to pack).

PTMu changes:
  • Tire physics
  • Chassis physics
  • Aerodynamics data
  • Upgrades
  • Engines and turbos physics
  • Curbs and tracks grip
  • AI
  • Assists
  • Physics engine tickrate
  • Decreases steering lag
  • Decreases magnetic collisions effect

In short it's complete overhaul of game physics data.
Installing the mod
When file is downloaded unpack it to the folder of your choice. Desktop is fine. You will see two folders inside PTMu 1.79 by PoLinii.com directory which are:
  • Packed game
  • Unpacked game
Steam and Origin Shift 2 versions are both packed. Enter the "Packed game" folder and pick your mod version. For the start I suggest "Base mod" version. Copy the contents of "Base mod" into "..yoursteamfolder\steamapps\common\Need For Speed Shift 2".

It's important to copy contents of "Base mod" folder not the folder itself. If you did everything correct you should have these two files:
  • Install (RUN AS ADMIN).bat
  • SHIFT2U.exe
in the "..yoursteamfolder\steamapps\common\Need For Speed Shift 2" directory.

Now it's time to run Install (RUN AS ADMIN).bat as an Admin. Right click it and choose Run as Admin. Press Enter in the script to start the injection process. When finished press Enter again and script will close automatically.

Congratulations, PTMu is installed! Now set up the controls.
Configuring controls
PTMu is meant to be used with Logitech steering wheels (DFGT, G25, G27 and so on) or trigger equipped gamepads (x360, PS3 via SCP Driver[forums.pcsx2.net]). It kind of works with Thrustmaster wheels too but cockpit steering animation will be limited to 180 degrees. Fanatec's are also supported via Logitech emulation.

For keyboards only driving model should be set to easy and all possible assists be turned on (except maybe braking assist).

For wheels and gamepads first set highest difficulty and hardest driving model. Leave the ABS ON (low). Now proceed to the controls section and if available choose one of the predefined profiles (available for DFGT/DFP/G25/G27/x360 pad - for PS3 pad use SCP and x360 profile in game). Then go to advanced steering options. Below are the settings which you can also find in the mod archive.

Additional settings and known bugs
PTMu offers few addons:
  • Tire heating turned off
  • Hard AI
  • 270 degrees wheel versions of the mod
First turns off tire heating. It's handy for long drifting events where tires get very hot very fast and usually explode. Second offers harder AI for those of you that are fast. Third is for people with rather old steering wheels (it limits the steering lock so cars are fine even with low rotation wheels).

These alternative addons can be installed the same way main mod is.

The main bug of the mod comes to light in Career mode Time Trials. Target times of those events aren't altered to match new physics. Few might be unbeatable. The AI events are fine though and since Time Trials are only small percentage of events it's not a big deal. Especially considering the AI is much better with the mod installed.

If you feel steering lag after mod installation you might want to delete dinput8.dll from Shift 2 main folder. This file has been added to PTMu in order to decrease lag but in rare cases it increases it.

For additional info about the mod read the PTMu manual.
Have fun!

@Moonraker Elite: Sorry, I don't remember.

Do you guys use pack or unpack version?

Make the steering as sensitive as you like in the settings, you'll still get massive understeer.
This 'mod' is absolute trash.

If I'm not mistaken, you can tweek the steering in options to make in more sensitive to compensate for the understeer; which, in comparison to the original floaty physics, is a small price to pay for decent driving physics.

good job

If you have massive understeer you can decrease 'speed sensitive' settings in the controller options. Aids for gamepad/keyboard are set in such a way that car chooses maximum effective amount of steering. Also career is beatable however some time trials are clearable only with slowest time which is mentioned in the text above.

I tried this mod, on controller. It's unplayable. Cars now have massive understeer. This mod managed to waste 20 minutes of my time tuning my R8 because I thought I can fix the understeer by tuning, instead, the mod itself causes it to have understeer. My time attack runs are even worse with the mod as well. My CCX run was 100 milliseconds away from getting hard objective done, but with the mod I can't even clear easy objective as my car spun out very easily on straights.

Gonna give this a try and compare it to the physics of actual sims I'm used to playing (GTR 2, AC and RaceRoom). Because Shift 2 had some interesting ideas I liked, such as the livery customization, but the simcade physics aren't for me, I prefer either true simulation, or just full on arcade. Middle ground feels weird.

I can image that for those who've never played Assetto Corsa or another full-scale sim, that it seems unplayable. Of course, it probably makes beating the AI in career mode nearly impossible.

If this mod is too much for you, give the UCP mod a try. It keeps the physics of the base game, but fixes bugs like input lag, poor performance, and many others.
