How to Make Effective Callouts
By Wheat-Thin
With Counter Strike Global Offensive being a team based game, working as a team is obviously of the upmost importance. Giving callouts on enemy positions are therefore vital to your CS:GO success. This is not a guide on the callouts to different maps, for those can be found from other community sources, or the top left corner in-game. This guide is primarily made to teach players how to make their callouts more effective, by making your information more specific with less "jibber jabber".

Intro on How to Make Effective Callouts
With Counter Strike Global Offensive being a team based game, working as a team is obviously of the upmost importance. Giving callouts on enemy positions are therefore vital to your CS:GO success. This is not a guide on the callouts to different maps, for those can be found from other community sources, or the top left corner in-game. This guide is primarily made to teach players how to make their callouts more effective, by making your information more specific with less "jibber jabber".
Pronouns and Their Uses
Before we begin, we need to go over the basic recipe for an effective callout. The recipe is:

"[Pronoun] ['is' or 'are'] [preposition if necassary] [position]"

In the English language, pronouns are words that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers either to the participants of a discourse or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in a discourse. Since saying names and saying "A terrorist" is too long, it is not effective for using these in your callout. For example:

Don't say: "A terrorist is Long"
Do say: "One is Long"

Obviously since this is only the beginning of the guide, I dont assume you know proper pronouns. Here is a list of several callouts you can use, and their guidelines:

  • They- When every single enemy is in a position
  • One- When only one enemy is in a position
  • Several- When 2 or more enemies are in a position
  • Everyone- When every single enemy is in a position (More exact than "they")
  • All- When every single enemy is in a position (More exact than "everyone")
  • He or She- When one enemy is in a position, and you dont know their gender
  • Few- When 2 or 3 enemies are in a position
  • Many- When 3 or 4 enemies are in a position

Pronouns are the back bone of any callout if you cannot use them correctly, you have already lost a critical advantage for your team before the game has even started.
Grammar in your Callout
If you cannot use proper grammar in your callout, how are people going to understand you? Improper grammar is equivelent to speaking a different language. Luckily there is little to do wrong grammar wise in CS:GO. The only grammar needed is subject-verb agreement, to decide when to use "is", or "are" as the second ingredient in your callout. This depends on your pronoun. I will put below which verb to use depending on your pronoun:

  • They- are
  • One- is
  • Several- are
  • Everyone- is
  • All- are
  • He or She- is
  • Few- is or are
  • Many- are

Grammar is a fundamental skill in your CS:GO callout. If you have issues with subject-verb agreement, you can visit this link for more practice:

Possible Prepositions
Prepositions are meant to add to a callout. This is very hard to show without an example so here:

What not to do:
"One is Cat"
This can be inferred, through bad grammar, that the enemy has turned into a feline. This is not possible, so therefore, it is false information for your team. This will definitely confuse teammates, and might even cost a crucial round.

What to do:
"One is on Cat"
This tells your team that the enemy is on the position known as Cat. This is highly effective and can win several rounds for your team.

As you can see prepositions are a very important part of a callout. This may be considered an advanced technique, so don't be sad if you mess up a few times.
Thanks and Sources
Thank you for reading this guide. I am hoping through this guide the CS:GO community will be greatly improved. If you master these techniques, you will one day possibly become a great CS:GO player.

Obviously I was taught most of this information at one time too. Therefore I would like to thank my callout teacher, Blue Ranger, for showing me the effective way to use callouts.

Thanks again!
