The Skin Editor
The skin editor is a small feature in Mitosis that allows you to create or import skins to be used in FFA and Hunger Games. It can be accessed via the small profile settings button in the top left of the menu, then by clicking "Skin" and clicking "Create".

You can either draw your own skin using the small selection of tools, or import a picture to use as a skin.

Tips
Crop your photo before uploading
It is generally a good idea to use an image editor like GIMP (or even paint) to crop the section of a photo you want to use as your skin to a square. If you don't, it will display the entire picture as part of the skin, which will cause border problems if it's not a square picture.

You'll also want to make sure the cropped version has most of the entire subject inside the square. Photo skins are downgraded to a pixelated version, so someone standing 20 feet away in a picture will become incredibly blurry.

Improper cropping may look like this:

This is an example of proper cropping:

Saving
Your skin is automatically saved periodically. If you draw something, and close the editor or get diconnected, it is usually still there when you come back, give it a few seconds. The save button is only for actually buying the skin.

Moderation
All the custom skins that are submitted are moderated by a person, as to remove any pornographic or other offensive content. This can cause moderation queues that will take a few hours to clear up. You cannot use your skin until it has been moderated, so give it a day or two.

Price of a custom skin
The price of a custom skin is variable. It will always start at 100 coins if nothing has been drawn, and will incrementally climb to 200 depending on how many pixels have been colored. Uploading a picture, and then erasing the unused corners will usually get it down to about 180 coins.

The Green Line
The green circle is the border of the skin. Everything up to the very edge of the green border will be used, so it's important not to erase over the green line while getting rid of the corners, otherwise you will be left with small empty spots around the edge of the skin. It's better to spend a few extra coins then have this happen.
When erasing the corners, your skin should have a final product with the skin sticking over the green line a little, like this:

Note: If you plan to start a guild, it will use the entire skin as the picture as opposed to just the green line. So, you can either not erase the corners, or you could just use the
Editing Feature
You are allowed to edit your skin after it is approved for a maximum of 25 coins. At the time I screwed up my skin, I didn't know this, so I wasted 180 coins on another skin. Don't be stupid like me! :D

The Tools

Cursor: The cursor is exactly what it sounds like. It is basically no tool, and won't change anything if you click in the editor. (I believe it might be used for panning while zooming, but I'm not sure if that's only a mobile feature.)

Brush: The brush will draw the color that is selected on the skin.

Erase: The erase tool will erase a part of the skin to a transparent background, which will save you coins to some extent.

Square/Rounded: These select the tip of the erase and brush tool. Square is a square, and rounded is a circle.

Color: Color determines the color that the brush tool will use. There is a simple drop-down menu for picking a color from a pre-made colorset. There is no RGB wheel. Unfortunately...

Brush Size: Determines the size of the brush or eraser. This is how many layers of pixels are around the center. I.E, 1 = single pixel, 2 = a layer of pixels around the single, 3 = 2 layers, ETC.

Soft Lines: When left unchecked, this draws the exact color. When checked, the pixels on the edge of the brush become transparent, and will blend with the last color to some extent.

Show Grid: Displays a grid of 4x4 boxes on the screen. It's a good idea to disable this when previewing the skin.

Background: Changes the color of the background. This doesn't do anything but make erasing a white area easier in most cases. This won't affect the border of the skin in gameplay.

Since it automatically downscales the image, anything over 128px is probably fine. If you pick an image in the realm of 147 or some other odd number, you might have some slight artifacts in the final skin as it tries to crop a slightly higher res image to slightly lower.

Either way, I haven't played in 2 years so I have no idea if this is still the same system.

What is the ideal image size for a custom skin?

Oh yeah, that's right. When I wrote this review I didn't think of those. Thanks.

You forgot to mention high-res textures and that guild skins on the list show the entire image, not just the area within the green circle
