MVM : How to counter your teammate's dumb excuses for being bad (chat script included !)
By Quenquent the babysitter
We all have seen this situation : a teammate doing exceptionally bad and giving such bad excuses you don't even want to answer a wall of text to him. But the problem is that he won't learn that way, and someone else, or maybe even you, will fall on that teammate that will still be doing bad and thinking his low-level excuses are valid.

Or maybe you are one of those players, and someone redirected you to this guide to show how wrong you are and/or is too lazy to prove it to you with his own words. He don't do this because he is mean, or neither do I, it is just to show you something a lot of players seems to avoid in MVM : reality.

This guide include a script to copy/paste the content of this guide to not waste your fingers in a wall of text.

Introduction and opening words
As said above, this guide isn't only aimed toward players who always hear the same excuses over and over again, but also for the persons saying those "excuses". However, keep in mind that some players don't have the critical thinking needed to understand the concept of "I am wrong" ; this is mostly true for kids or teens.

Each sections of this guide will be a typical sentence a bad player would use to justify his lack of skills, experience, or logic. Each sections will also explain why the player in question think this is a valid excuse, why it isn't, and how to counter it (the last part will be what the script will hold).

Just remember something extremely important : there is more than one way to play MVM, and not all of what you might see is "bad players". There's more than the meta, and other thing than going Scottish Resistance + Kritz Medic on Empire Escalation. Also, hatred isn't the only way in solving problems, and isn't the best one too. Some words might hurt, but have to be said.

If you have any common invalid excuses you want to counter, want to have something clarified, want to improve some parts of the guide, or need some help with the script itself, the comment section is here for that.
"I play for fun"/"It's just a game"
This is one of the most common excuses seen in Mann Up. The player put forward the main reason we all play video games : to have fun, and that being serious isn't at all required. He also use this to precise that skill level do not influence in the fun we have while playing.

What the player forgot is how you have fun in a video game, or at least in a players vs bots situation : by trying to win. Dying a lot, repetitively losing, in short, getting stomped, isn't fun. You don't get stomped by being good, or at least, good enough for the corresponding difficulty. Additionally, having a player that is not doing his part of the job, that isn't in the right difficulty level, or that is dragging the team down, force his teammates to compensate his lack of skill, so make the mission harder, and so tend to reduce the fun his teammates have. Following this player's logic, he shouldn't stay as he ruin the fun for his teammates, and he also isn't contributing to his own fun.

Typical answer :
"I have to agree : this is a game and games are made to have fun. But how do you have fun if you don't try to play the game ? You don't have fun being stomped by robots. You have fun by actually trying to win. You don't play on the hardest difficulty of a game if you don't know the commands or if you haven't played the tutorial. You learn how to play it THEN go on higher difficulties. And following your logic, you shouldn't stay since you are ruining the fun of 5 other players. Since you aren't that good, we have to compensate it to not get destroyed, and it makes it less fun for us. So yes, it's a game, and yes, we are all here to have fun, but with you, we cannot."
"I am learning"/"We all have to start somewhere"
One of the rare excuses that can be valid. The player simply explain he isn't good because he is learning, and don't know some of the basics of MVM. This is a completely valid excuse on Normal and Intermediate, and for low tours on Advanced (since the step between Intermediate and Advanced can be pretty high, and you don't learn all of the basics in Intermediate).

Of course, this is pretty stupid to not know the basics of MVM when you are on higher difficulties. Difficulties are made so any kind of players can have fun playing at the level that fit him. You go on higher difficulties because the lower ones aren't a challenge anymore, and you know more about the game. You don't start to learn about the game at the higher difficulties.
Note about low tours on Advanced : if the player is doing really basic mistakes (trying to mark a Tank, using the Rocket jumper, building a nest at spawn...), this is NOT a valid excuse, as you can learn that these are mistakes on the lower difficulties.

Typical answer :
"Yes, we all had to learn, and we all did mistakes, even basic ones. However, we did that on Normal and Intermediate, not on Advanced or Expert. You go on higher difficulties because the lowers ones aren't challenging anymore. Completing a mission once does NOT make you good for the next level. And seriously, you don't know the basics on this difficulty ? Then you have nothing to do here. Go back to lower difficulties, go read some guides, train yourself on Normal/Intermediate, then come back."
"Trust me, I know what I'm doing"
This excuse starts to get more and more common, but is certainly one of the biggest lies you will ever hear in MVM. The player, not wanting to admit that he don't have any form of strategy, cannot explain his upgrades, weapons, and class choices. He can be really thinking he know what he is doing, but don't realise it. Most of his tactics are the ones he used on Intermediate, proving that he trained a minimum, but hasn't asked for tips or read guides from experienced players.

It can be hard to reason these players, as they fail and will fail to realise they are wrong. This is not because they are stupid or anything, it's simply human nature : when you think you are right, you have problem to trust someone that says you're wrong. The only real argument you can put here is that your own experience is above his, and that you already tried his tactic, and that it doesn't work. If he is convinced, don't be a d**k and tell him how to upgrade (for a beginner).

Typical answer :
"Sorry, I don't trust you because you obliviously don't know what you are doing. I'm sure I got more experience in MVM than you have in TF2. The MVM community tested a LOT of strategies, loadouts and upgrade paths since Two Cities came out. They made guides about it, they explained why some works and why others don't. And this include YOUR strategy, with YOUR weapons and YOUR upgrades. And yours does NOT work !"
"Don't tell me what to do"/"I do what I want"
In this scenario, the player says that he is in a free environment, and that anyone can play the way he want. He also implies that he know how to play, and he don't need anyone to tell him how to, or he don't need any help or feedback on his playstyle. Players saying this aren't necessary bad, more skilled players also says this to teammates obsessed by the meta, or to bad players trying to order them.

This is purely selfish and egoist. And being selfish and egoist in a coop-based gamemode defeat the point of the gamemode itself. A teammate not wanting to cooperate is the worst that can happen to any MVM team, and should be deal with really fast. Even if you have good arguments to force him to cooperate, this might not be enough.

Typical answer :
"No, you don't do what you want. If I and/or the other team members is telling what to do, it's because they want you to cooperate. And, obliviously, you are not. This is coop, not play by yourself and let your teammates do the job. If you don't want to play with a team, then leave, forget MVM, and come back when you want to."
"We beat the previous wave"/"Nothing went wrong last wave"
A pretty simple one. The player just says that the team beaten the previous wave, and so the following ones can be beaten too even with his lack of skills. These players don't always admit they are bad, but says that there's no reason for them to improve as the team can win.

What these players forgot, is that the waves tends to get harder and harder as you progress. Even if you beat one wave, you might not beat the next one. Additionally, things like the team composition, loadout and upgrades might work on a wave, but not on an other (a wave with Uber medics in a team without medic killer, while the previous wave had none) might cost you the victory. And the harder the robots push you back, the less money your money collector can grab, which mean you will have less upgrades for the next wave, and the next wave will be even more harder.

Typical answer :
"Yes, we beat the last wave, but there's more than one wave in a mission. The waves gets harder and harder, so if we struggle for one, we might not be able to do the next ones. Also, more we struggle in containing the robots, the harder it gets for our money collector to get the money. And the more money we miss, the less upgrades we have, and the harder it gets. In the end, we will eventually loose due to a lack of skill in the team, a lack of money and a lack of upgrades. And due to that, we will never beat the mission. We won't be strong enough to stop the robots and never win."
Script
Because I do not think hosting websites will keep this file for ever and I don't want to upload the script again everytime I want to modify it, you will find the content of the script below. All you need to do, is to put the script in your autoexec.cfg file, or execute the script from it.

How to make an autoexec.cfg file
  • Download Notepad++[notepad-plus-plus.org], install it and open it.
  • Make a new file, save it as "autoexec.cfg" in C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf/custom/config/cfg.
  • This file will automatically start any script in it when you start TF2. Simply copy/paste the script below

How to use the script
Simply enter in your console "mvm_excuses_help" to have a list of the present answers and the command to trigger them. You can use binds if you prefer. mvm_excuses_help will only send messages to your console, nothing will appear in-game.

You are absolutely free to modify the script as much as you want, just don't make yourself look like an idiot by saying crap.
