Jigs
There are five different jig types in the game. Each jig is good for a few species that can be seen by pressing the yellow info button on the corner of each item. Some jigs are even aimed only at one certain species. This however, does not mean that other species will not take the bait if an opportunity presents itself. There is no absolute way to use each jig type, but in the next pages a recommended way to do fishing with each jig type is presented alongside with other additional information.

Mormyshka
Mormyshka is a great jig for all conditions and works almost for all species. It is a good jig even for small fish. Even during the times when it seems that fish are reluctant to take the bait, mormyshka may provoke the fish to start eating. However, strong winds and deep waters are not always the best conditions for these jigs. The best way to swim mormyshka is to move it slowly, but constantly around the hole. Rapid motions may sometime lure the fish closer, but may also scare the fish away. Using baits with mormyshkas is not necessary, but recommended.

Balanced
Balanced jigs are more difficult to use than other jigs, but are better for bigger fish that also have a tendency to eat smaller fish. Therefore, these are good for more limited selection of species than other jigs. Balanced jigs also require a medium or a heavy rod. The best way to swim balanced jigs is to make rapid vertical pulls. Between pulls it is good to keep a short pause so the jig has time to fall back into low position and settle down. Balanced jigs do not require baits, but they can be customized with color hooks to look more attractive, or attract certain species.

Vertical
Vertical jigs are easy to pick and use and work well in all conditions. They can be also modified by changing the standard hook to one of the colored hooks, which makes them very versatile. The best way to swim vertical jigs is to make vertical pulls that are slower than using a balanced jig. Similarly to balanced jigs, it is good to keep a short pause between pulls so the jig has time to fall back into low position and settle down. However, vertical jigs are more forgiving about how they are used, but may not always provoke fish to feed. It is recommended to use a bait or a color hook with vertical jigs.

Spoon
Spoons are good for catching fish of medium to big size. They are a little more demanding than other jigs, since they do not need baits and are little harder to jiggle. Modifying them with colored hooks is still recommended. Fishing with spoons is kind of a combination between mormyshka and vertical jigs. It also may depend on the fish when the other style is preferred over the other. Some fish may attract to more slower and periodic pulls, but usually a good way to get fish take the bait is quicker jiggling with very small vertical motions.

Spinner
Spinners should be moved by slow long motions and then relaxed. This attracts fish even from longer distances when they are attracted to the spinning plate. Sometimes it may be good to ease between pulls. Rapid movements are not ideal while using spinners.

Augers
There are three different auger types available in the game. The differences between light, medium and heavy auger is the width of the blade and the drilling speed. Smaller augers are faster to use and drill through the ice faster than heavier augers. However, heavier augers make larger holes, so also the biggest fish can fit through the hole.

Ultralight Rods
Ultralight rods, or UL rods, are very good for mormyshka fishing. They are quick to use and they have very sensitive tips that show even the smallest fish trying to nibble the bait. These properties are also their weakness. They can’t be used with all, heavier jig types. UL rods also have the thinnest fishing lines, so the line may break more easily with bigger fish.

Medium Rods
The game starts with one medium rod unlocked. This is a good rod type for all situations and most of the fish can be caught with medium rods. It is not as sensitive as UL rods, so it is harder to see the smallest fish. Although it does have thicker fishing line than UL rods, it still can’t endure the largest fish in the game. All jigs can be used with medium rods.

Heavy Rods
Heavy rods are a choice for those who wants the big catches. When using a heavy rod together with a heavy drill, you won’t see the small fish eating the bait, but even the biggest beasts in the game won’t get away. Heavy rods are much slower to to use than other rods, but may reward an experienced fisherman with big fish, which is especially good in weight based competition modes.

Baits
Most jigs in the game can be used with a bait. Using baits makes the the jig more compelling and fish are provoked to try and eat it. There is a wide collection of baits in the game. Each baits have their preferred species, but in general worms are usually good for all species even though they favor few species. What comes to other baits, fish tend to be more selective about them.

Lures
Lures can be used to attract fish closer to the hole. If fish does not seem to be eating, throwing a handful of lures may provoke fish to feeding frenzy. At least they may attract fish closer for a moment. A number of different lures are available, so looking which species each lure attracts is wise choosing a tactic for each competition.

Hooks
Balanced jigs, vertical jigs and spoons can be modified by changing hooks. They can be used with the standard hook and baits, or with colored hooks. Colored hooks are a great alternative for baits. They are not consumables, so after unlocking one it can be used indefinitely. Colored hooks are also a great way to really modify the equipment towards catching certain species. So using these with the lures and carefully selected jig is recommended if the goal is to have certain species.

For the spinner you just go up slowly and release left click ?

Having never even seen an iced-over lake, and not knowing anything about fishing this helped a lot! Thanks

After 10 hours, I feel rather foolish for never figuring that out. Thanks!

You can adjust the depth with mouse scroll or by dragging/clicking the depth meter on the left hand side of the screen.

Hm, Ill have to look at it, then. Whenever I drop my line. it seems to go to a specific depth

You can go to all depths with all rods, but heavy rods can endure even the biggest fish in the game that others can't.

Will the heavy rods allow me to fish deeper?
