Rules
Anyone can play in our games. The only thing we ask is that they follow the rules below.

We have the following rules:

1)Games last 1-3 hours. If you cannot commit to 3 hours playing (2 for the MPT scenario), don't play. If for whatever reason the game isn't over after 3 hours, people will understand if you have to leave.

2)Don't quit. Quitting ruins games, especially since most games are played with teams.

3)No cheating or bug exploits. If you don't know any, don't worry about this rule.

If a player loses power, or their game crashes, or their internet stops working, we meet in the civplayers steam chat, and reload. So this means there's one more rule.

4)Anyone in a game must either a) Be part of our steam group or discord ("Civplayers Civ3 League") or b) have someone on their friends list in the game who is.

This is so we have some way of messaging you if we need to reload.

Game Setup
We play scenarios on random maps. Only the host needs the scenario. The QC (quickciv) scenario is common, which is essentially a sped up version of vanilla civ3 (faster growth, faster production, faster science), with a few other changes. Another popular mod is Future, a scenario where you start with all technology researched, and a few other changes. If we have 8 players, we often play MPT. MPT is vanilla civ on a tiny map with almost no water. The Modern mod is the final ladder mod, and it is an industrial/modern scenario built from the ground up.

To keep games short, all games types except future and modern are played with 1 or 2 city elimination, meaning that if you lose that many cities, you die. So place your cities close together (2-3 tiles apart). Future and modern are played with regicide. You start with a king unit. If you lose it, you die.

Build your cities close together, like this, or you will die a very painful death.
Teamplay

We play team games almost exclusively. You can talk in game by pressing the ~ or ` key. It is located above “tab”, and below “esc” on an english keyboard. It may be different on international keyboards. On a German keyboard, it is altGr + "+". On a Dutch keyboard, it is "shift + ~". On a Turkish keyboard, it is alt gr + double click ü. On a Slovenian (and maybe Bosnian/Croatian) keyboard, it is altgr + 1

We start the game by muting enemy players, so they can’t hear us talk with our team. We do this by clicking the speech bubble next to their name in the top right of the screen. This is so the other team can't hear our plans. Notice how the game assigns each player a number, visible both in game and in the setup lobby. We use these as a shorthand for teams. So if someone says "mutes 236" they mean "the teams are players 2, 3, and 6 vs. everyone else. Mute these players. (If you are player 2, 3, or 6, then mute all the other players).

In the example on the left, the teams are 234. Note that if you forget, often the host will list the teams in their game name (234_Suede). As I am player 1, I have muted players 2, 3, and 4, the enemy team.

Common chat abbreviations:

“y”= yes “n”= no. "nt"=next turn. "eot"=end of turn. "in 2"= in 2 turns. "call"= conduct diplomacy with me. hit=attack.

"no con" or "nc" = don't contact me (usually when you're fighting) "locs"=Locations (say grid coordinates if you have grid)
The Grid
The grid is an add-on that provides coordinates to the minimap. We use it to communicate spawn locations. It is not essential to play in a game with us. But here's what it looks like.

Conclusion
And you're done! You're qualified to play a game of Civ 3 Multiplayer.

If you have extra time, I'd recommend watching this video. It covers general differences between civ 3 multiplayer and single player.
