The port
Before you can go off and explore the wonderful world called the mountains, you must know what the port looks like first. The port can sometimes be found on the starter island, otherwise you'll have to island hop (traveling between islands to find something that you need, such as a port). The port has a white color, to indicate snow. The ports I found can carry 10 creatures on it.
Preparing for the snow
Now you probably want to just run straight off to the snow biome and discover the hidden genes, but you need to make sure your ready first. Here are some genes that are required if you want to succsefuly explore the mountains.

1. Big body: Big body shouldn't come as a surprise, but you need it. It gives you cold resistance, 1 defense and 2 strength. Adam will always spawn with it, and Eve sometimes has it recessive or sometimes even dominant aswell, so its not that hard to get.

2. Claw: The claw is going to help you with fending off the enemies there, along with hunting the prey that lives in the mountains. You also get some fishing from it, so even more food.

These next genes are optional, but will help out a bunch.

1. Antlers/Ram horns: There is no reason why you shouldn't take these with you. A free point in strength may end up saving you in the end.

2. Venomous fangs: Venomous fangs are really useful for fighting with the enemies there, because unlike the apes, they are not immune to venom. While they do lower your scent, you'll only want them on your fighters. You collecters can have cracker jaw or big nose.

3. Nimble fingers: If you want big nose over cracker jaw, then nimble fingers are a must, as nuts and clams are some of the most reliable sources of food on the mountains.

4. Medium tail: You don't need it as much if you have big body, but for the creatures that medium body or any other type of body, they'll need it to stay warm.
What to do
So you have your genes, you have you creatures of your choice on the port, and you hit the travel button. After a bit of traveling, your creatures finally arrive at the mountains! So what to do first?

Find a tree: There is normaly a tree close to the port you came from, but if there isn't, head to the closest tree you can find, and make camp there with your own nests. If you find nests there, then you're one step further to heading off into the mountains area. If you don't have any cracking ability on your creatures, then just find a spot with a lot of berry bushes.

Prepare for the snow: After a couple of days, the temperature will most likley decrease. When this happens, get any creatures without big body and put them in a triangle shape around your camp. This will give them more cold resistance, because they are all huddled up. When you have a new baby born when its snowing, make sure the baby has the warmth buff. If not, the baby will not be able to move, because its a baby and has its cold resistance points lowered.

Preparing for battle: Soon enough after the snow has fell, a new enemy will spawn. This enemy is called the Balance Bear. Its not a gaurentee they will attack you, but just in case, suround the camp with your big body creatures and any one who will be fighting so that the bears can't break in and kill your collecters and babies.

Now that you know how to survive, you will need to know about what lives in these mountains.

Ancient genes
So by now you've proabably noticed a strange blue rock that looks like it has a couple of cracks in it, and you proabably want to go over and check it out. Well inside that blue rock (ice rock) is a creature with an ancient gene. These are the genes you can get.

Digging Trunk

Smelling: 3
Digging: 3

Saber Tooth Fangs

Strength: 2

Megaloceras Horns

Strength: 2

Hammer Tail

Island differences
On the first snow island, you may have noticed another snow port, but with skeletons on it. To finish up this guide, I will tell what the differences between the two islands are.

1st Snow Island (Snow and grass island)

Grass around the outskirts of the island.
Acorn trees.
Berry bushes in the grass parts
Not as many bears
Less foxes (Theres still alot though!)

2nd Snow Island (Only snow)

No grass around the edges
No trees
No berry bushes (I'm not sure because I haven't gone to it yet, don't want my poor critters to die)
Bear spawn rate seems to be higher, same with foxes

Why go to the Second Island?

The reason you would want to go too the second island, is because you are gaurenteed another ice block to break, instead of just gambling on traveling to a big grass island, and only having a chance of getting a snow port. Of course, you would go the this island, grab the ancient creature, and leave ASAP.
Conclusion
The snowy mountains biome is a pretty difficult biome, especially the second island, but it gives some really good genes. I am trying to get a world where I can go and get all the prehistoric genes, and pretty much create god creatures. (Probably not Mammoth Feet though, because I would need nimble fingers and a running leg) Anyway, do I think a new player should try out the mountains? Well it depends. If they know somethings like needing big body or huddling their creatures together, than maybe, but if you're just starting out, then probably no.

Well, I hope this guide helped you out, and good luck breeding those genes in.

I'm playing a Sandbox game on First Snow. I disabled the Balance Bear and chose genes I thought would work well to start off with (which has made a big difference), but it's still been tricky because I've found I need 3 Cold Resistance if my creatures aren't to get cold in the snow. So they all now have Medium Tail and either Big Body or Heat Body.

Instead of normal claws could i use bearyena claws (aka use one of my bearyena hybrid monsters)

Well, birds have been around for centuries... And winged creatures could just be regular creatures who froze and turned into an ice rock...

Yeah. That happens. Maybe wings are just a prehistoric gene that is found in modern days.
