Introduction
An opponent saw I was using an AUG during a match and jokingly asked if I was going to make a guide for it. I killed them a few times in a row with it; so clearly they didn't respect the weapon or know how to combat it. Some players try to win by trash talking(or atleast they claim that's why they do it...) but investing some time into understanding the weapon mechanics would probably produce better results than angrily typing to opponents about it. When I see someone laughing about my guides it only makes me more determined to play better, not worse.

In specific situations you can get kills easier with the AUG rather than an M4. It feels less chaotic than an A4, has a larger magazine than an A1-S, and has an easy to handle spray pattern. If your opponent picks one up that you dropped, they likely won't be able to use it properly compared to them looting an M4.
Scoping-in
My main reason for picking an AUG would be how easy I find it getting kills compared to the M4 when I'm playing against opponents that aren't as competitive in firefights as I am during that match. Whether it's their skill or the hit registration(including connection delay) if I have an advantage then I might switch from my default M4 buyround to the AUG to scope in before firing.

If they can't outshoot me then they might be ranked against me based on their skill at teamwork, so they'll have to work together defeat my AUG. The AUG is a good defensive weapon though, capable of blasting opponents with its easy to handle up-left burst at any range, but at close range sometimes I give the crosshair a shake while I track a target to make sure I'm getting hits and not letting them suddenly strafe out of my line of fire where I might miss everything.

If I know a target is 10hp then I'll often shake the crosshair at them anyway just to make sure I get that 1 needed hit, otherwise they could dance around and I'd hopelessly try to track them always being a tenth of a second behind their movement.

If I'm the higest ranked player on my team then I'm probably going to be facing lower ranked opponents, and this is where picking the AUG can help me carry the team. I find it far easier to kill a bunch of players with an AUG compared to trying to carry with an M4. You would need to invest time to practice enough with an AUG to find that advantage though.

Scoping-in takes a moment, but the time invested pays off as you then get the benefit of a larger target infront of your crosshair, and offers more definition to handling the spray pattern. Firing at a target at long range might only offer you a few pixels of a target, but scoping-in can allow you to spray at longer ranges where someone with an M4/AK might only burst, or someone unfamiliar with a AUG/SG 553 could only tap.
Spray pattern
The pattern is a simple upwards, diagonal left, then cut right before returning left at the end of the magazine. Most kills I get are during the diagonal left part, so I often fire in controlled bursts of such. I've clocked 4,000 kills with my StatTrak AUG, and got the achievement for playing 5,000 matches of Arms Race or Demolition mode which I did mostly in Arms Race which would put you through thousands of bot kills with the weapon if playing offline.

So at over 10,000 kills with it; countering the spray pattern is muscle memory for me. I do sometimes practice the spray with it on an aim map to keep my skills sharp(along with most of the other automatic weapons), but if you don't want to spend time practicing it then its not for you. I've enjoyed my time with it, and I have used my skill with it as a competitive advantage in matches, but if I didn't enjoy it I'd simply focus my practice on one of the M4 rifles and the AK47 instead. I wouldn't neglect the other rifles by using the AUG though.
Capturing guns
If a team is saving money during a round by not buying a primary weapon, and they get a kill then they'll look to pick up their opponents dropped one. I once spectated a teammate picking up an SG 553 during an eco round and they didn't compensate for the spray pattern at all when firing it. If someone picks up an AUG then they probably won't be able to spray with it either.

As long as your team buys together, then your teammates probably won't end up with your AUG, but your opponents at some point might do, and they won't be able to use it to the same effect as if it were an M4A4 or A1-S. This is an advantage to your team, and while it might not sound like a critical one, competitiveness is somewhat about looking for every advantage you can get.
Weaknesses
Very few people appreciate the capabilities of this weapon, and as such you might get teamkilled for buying it like I've been(but I still managed to topfrag with it at supreme). If your opponents are outshooting you then spending a moment of time during a gunfight to scope in would be a disadvantage, as you'd need to fire as quickly as possible to win that duel. The AUG is only something I'd use if I thought I could invest a moment to scope in.

Its more expensive than an M4, and I think a lot of competitive potential is lost over poor economy management. I'd often rather save the money by buying an M4 and utility instead of an AUG. At long ranges the AUG can be beaten by a well placed desert eagle headshot, so you have to be careful against long range anti-eco rounds, maybe by burst strafing. The AUG cannot headshot kill a fully armored opponent at full health, so it is vulnerable like the M4A4/A1-S and FAMAS.
Conclusion
Knowing the handling of all the weapons would be an advantage. You could loot any gun and know how to use it. Being familiar with the niche situations that certain weapons excel at gives you the confidence in knowing what would be a good purchase for your role during that round taking into account your money vs your opponents, what ranges you're fighting at, if they have armor, what minimum magazine size you want to take and so on...

Arguably every weapon has at some point had an ideal window of usefulness no matter how rarely that window opens up, except for the R8 in my opinion. Some of the employment of those weapons would be a gamble only attempted when things look dire, but the AUG certainly has a role for a die-hard FPS player in matchmaking if you're not getting destroyed, and its skins are cheap due to unpopularity as a weapon.

What I think is one of the nicest AUGs: My baby...
