Particles are made with shaders (not even sure if any sprites are used as they're fully dynamic.
Gyrth originally created a rain particle system that followed the player around which would probably be a better system for optimismisation... alas, that'd require every level to be changed and a whole new script... which isn't my speciality
I had a go at optimising some other assets but most framerate issues come from the game rendering multiple objects at the same time as there's no occlusion culling
I noticed that when rain particles are activated, the game runs like shit
