Tank Challenge Players Guide
L4D2 Tank challenge guide

Tank challenge has become one of the most popular Left for Dead 2 mods about and has super seeded its original counterpart Tank playground. Now on revision V1.5 it has become a virtually flawless map which I generally start my night with as a warm up stage before I do a run on a full map.
As a regular player I have observed and worked out some potentially useful insights into the map that might be of use to someone else out there. This is just my opinion and your welcome to disagree but if you have any suggestions yourself, please feel free to add them to the comments. Lets keep things positive please.

1. General
1. As a rule this map is difficult to play as a coordinated team as tanks tend to spread you apart and keep you so occupied that you can't keep track of your team. That said, wherever possible try to scan about and see where everyone is. If your not busy, try and help someone who's is in trouble like targeting the tank on their arse. If someone's down, can you get them up? It'll be your turn on the floor soon enough and we all need friends.
2. It is possible to get groups of tanks to follow you. This can give you a chance to get them away from a fallen player and then slip back to rescue them.
3. At the beginning of each round you have the opportunity for all of you to focus fire on one tank at a time. This is the best way to bring them down quickly and efficiently.
4. Keep your distance from the tanks. I must admit that in the first 5 rounds, I like to get very ‘gun ho’ and run just out of reach to really get my gaming head on. This is one reason I like this map to warm up on. However, when it starts to get busy, get on a different level and keep your distance. I’ve seen players take on 8 tanks and win by clever use of fire and then to just run in circles until the fire finishes them off.
5. If you die on land, once you have been defibbed leave as much equipment on the floor as possible. Obviously if you need it take it but a health kit left on a lower level might just save someone's arse.
6. If your dead and waiting for a defib, jump between the other players views and find out their skill level. I’ve learnt a lot just from watching a good player. 1st person view I best.
7. There are only four places where a tank climbs to the top level near the corners. Choose a different place to stand.
2. Health packs
1. As with all maps, don't use them unless you really need it. Pills and adrenalin are very common in this map so use these more. People seem to be under the impression that because health packs keep appearing on the gun carousel that they are infinite. They are not! I believe there are only 10 in a 10 round game and they will be gone by round 8 when you really start to need them. Don’t top up whenever you see one. I have been left without many times because of some selfish t**t pigging them all.
2. Where possible, don't carry one. As stated, they are finite and if you're knocked into the water with one then it's lost to the game. If you're low on health and will need one soon, by all means carry one.
3. Spread them about the map. When the action kicks off the busiest place is usually in the main arena where you can't get to them. If you can move them to the edges where you can get to them it further negates the need to carry one. You can move them by selecting a health, then a defib, then health etc while walking backwards. Don't ask me why. It just works better that way.
4. Don't heal in the open. It sounds obvious but the amount of times I see it done with fatal consequences is crazy. If your out of sight of a tank it is less likely to come after you.
5. Healing others while they defend is good strategy. You will also gain a friend and you need them here.
3. Weapons
1. Move weapons to the edges. Especially to the cross where you re-spawn. You'll need one after you've been defibbed.
2. Forget the shotguns. In this map they are useless. A short range weapon like that is no good in this game.
3. Either machine guns or rifles work well here as you have the laser on hand. Take a Magnum as well though as you can still inflict damage to the tank when incapacitated. Pistols are a waste of time.
4. The M60 is a lovely weapon in this game. 150 rounds with a high stopping power. However, on most servers you can't reload it which can suddenly leave you in the middle of a battle without a weapon. This being the case, either move it to the edge as an emergency weapon or use them up as they appear which is usually rounds 3,4 and 5 if memory serves. These are easy rounds which will allow you to grab a replacement weapon. Especially if you've moved some to the edges. On servers that allow reloads, be warned that when the M60 runs out, it's disregarded and can't be used. Don't let it run out!
5. The grenade launcher is another ideal weapon for this map. 4 direct hits is usually enough to bring a tank down and with 30 rounds it'll see you through 3 or 4 rounds. Its worth noting that a direct hit on the body does twice the damage as hitting them at they're feet, however tanks tend to sway as they run and I've seen too many 'sure hits' sail past. Better to aim low if they're on your tail. Also, avoid close combat if someone is using a grenade launcher. Either they wont be able to fire or you’ll take damage.
6. Explosive and incendiary ammo is often used inefficiently in this game. The general practice is to dump it at the carousel when they become available and everyone dives in. Sure the first tank goes down quick but that's the ammo gone for the next tank. Far better to spread them around the upper levels and use them only after round 5. Before 5 can be done easily without the need of explosives. This way they are used by different people at different times at the point when they are most needed. Another good practice with incendiary ammo is to fire only a couple of shots at a time. Enough to ignite the tank. When it goes out, fire a couple more. It's loosing health all the time it burns making efficient use of the ammo.
7. Molly's at the carousel are infinite. At least, I've never seen them run out. Use them. People tend to hold on to them for 'just the right moment' which never comes or you forget to use it. Where possible try to herd a few tanks together for maximum effect but knock yourself out. Burn the buggers! The other molly’s around the map will also re-spawn but not as often.
8. Milligun's are a great end to the match but don't do it alone! You need at least 3 there to maintain the position. Bare in mind that they only appear in round 9 so you will be facing a lot of opposition. They will overheat but I found that there are enough guns that you don't run out.
9. Melee weapons are next to useless here except for round 10. Always remember to get a sword at the beginning of round 10 for the hoards at the end.
10. Use explosive barrels after round 5 whenever you can do the most damage with it.
4. The last round. Try and keep some reserves of ammo and molly's for the final horde. Make sure you have a melee and someone has a defib. Above all, when the last tank goes down, Run like f to the area behind the cross. The horde is quick and it's big. Just move. A good trick I saw recently was to stand in front of the helicopter and shoot the barrels lower left and right followed by a molly in the upper middle. This left a complete wall of fire that couldn’t be be avoided by the horde.
