DISCUSSION RULES
  • Be polite :)
  • Only posts about critical issues (I.e. no smalltalk and no nitpicking. This is only for actual Showstoppers.)
  • Be specific in your posts (Further details in that "IMPORTANT" section below)
  • Avoid writing essays (Not only us, also other people might be interested in what you've posted if they are in the same situation)

LAUNCHING

[BMBS-LP-001] Chapter 5 is not there
This usually means that the workshop has not updated the mod automatically. In order to force an update you have tounsubscribe and re-subscribe.

If you have installed it with a local folder in your Black Mesa Root directory, we recommend doing a FULL REINSTALL i.e. deleting this folder and copy the folder from your workshop item again.

[BMBS-LP-002] Game won't start at all
This could happen if you have either admin privileges on your bms.exe or the game directory folders. Try if this happens on both Steam launch as well as via one of the .bat files. In a few cases running the .bat as administrator can fix this issue.

[BMBS-LP-003] Game crashes on start with "missing GameInfo.txt" error
This means that your gameinfo in your bshift folder (or symlink) cannot be located. Check if the folder structure is correct
SteamApps/common/BlackMesa/bshift/gameinfo.txt
Sometimes Steam also requires a restart.

[BMBS-LP-004] Game crashes on start with "Steam is not running" error
Usually that means that the Steam Client is not running.
Please post any further details if you're experiencing this issue and condition referred to is false.

[BMBS-LP-005] "Error Cannot Load Library Client"
This can happen if your gameinfo is malformed OR you have some messed up folder architecture in your SteamApps/common/ directory.

CRASHES / GLITCHES AT RUNTIME

IMPORTANT
We will require the following information from you in order to investigate / reproduce what you have experienced:
  • Screen Resolution
  • RAM
  • GPU
  • Video Driver
  • OS
  • CPU
  • Any applications running in background that tend to draw resources the game requires to work properly
  • Are you playing in Offline Mode?
  • Black Mesa Game Version
  • Launch settings (I.e. DXVK? NewUI / OldUI?)
  • Are you having any mods installed? ("Installed" does NOT equal "Subscribed"! If you have any manually installed files in your bms/custom folder, they still might be executed at runtime. Also keep a lookout for any leftovers from mods you have uninstalled in the past.)

If you don't get an error message, please also post a screenshot from the location where the game crashed.

[BMBS-RTC-001] Game is suddenly closing on map load / when the game is saved
Try using the OldUI method. The new UI is currently unstable and leads to crashes.

[BMBS-RTC-002] "Out of memory or address space"
Try lowering your graphics settings + check if you have any apps (Non-relevant OS-services included) running that draw resources.

[BMBS-RTC-003] Sudden crash when encountering Vortigaunts in Chapter 5
This is one of the things that got fixed with the Necro patch. Ensure you play either on the main branch or on the public beta. If you ever had the "Vortigaunt-Crash-Fix-Mod" isntalled, also check if it is fully uninstalled. There's still a chance that some of these files no longer work on the latest version of the game.

[BMBS-RTB-001] Some audio is goofed up (Making extremely loud beeps, static noise)
Normally this should not happen on a full re-install.
If you have any .cache files in your bshift folder, you can delete them. Especially the sound.cache in your sound folder in case they might be outdated.

Hi -
When I try to run the gamelink.bat as administrator, I get the following error in the command prompt:

The system cannot find the path specified.
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
Could not link - mklink failed.
Press any key to continue . . .

My game won't launch at all, either through the .bat files or the steam launcher, even with the launch options set. Can someone help? The weird thing is, it launched yesterday just fine.

When it launched fine then you actually don't have to use the gamelink again. Is the bshift directory still on the right place?

Anyone having problem with audio glitches, you have to do the following to fix it:

your destination should look like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa\bshift

Delete any files that contains "sound.cache" name in bshift folder and delete sound.cache file in the sound folder. It should be 6 files in total.

My Blue Shift is stuck on controller mode I think? I have tried different things to remedy this. I can barely change weapons, I have the weapon wheel without using a controller, scrolling goes between pistol/grenade and I have to do some convoluted inputs to get to other weapons. Sometimes if I scroll up it'll choose the revolver, and 1 will bring out the MP5? It breaks the immersion and makes it difficult to play smoothly. Even with a controller I can't switch weapons normally.

THANK YOU BRO! That fixed the audio glitch! It was driving me insane!

I have been having trouble launching the game after installing via the .bat file. All works fine until the shortcuts, which it does not put on my desktop like it says it will. I tried launching using the parameters via Steam, and it says the game is running but doesn't actually load up, and on task manager it says it is a background process. I have been having the same issue regardless of which bat launch link I use in file explorer as well as the other launch parameter option. I'm unsure of how to continue because I really want to play the mod but it just refuses to work. I also tried running the .bat as an administrator, no dice.

Okay I've got a real doozy of a problem. Blue Shift crashes my whole computer!
These crashes started back when Captive Freight got an update(not its original release).
It seems to happen after maybe 20 to 40 minutes during some scripted scenes. The screen goes black, the audio loops the same second over and over. I can't Ctr-Alt-Del, or get any response from my pc and I have to do a forced shutdown.

So far I've crashed in Duty Calls when meeting the scientist trapped in the airlock. Then when first meeting the technician in the Canals. After restarting my computer I can load my last save and continue on past that point.

I just ran through the base game up to We've Got Hostiles with no issues. This is unique to the Blue Shift.

It generated a steam crash dump but I don't know if that would help or how to post it to you.

My computer specs:
Screen Resolution: 1920x1080
RAM: 32GB
GPU: GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
Video Driver: 32.0.15.6094
OS: Windows 11 Home
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor
Launch settings: old_ui
Mods: Hazard Course

when i try to launch it i always get an error saying "bms.exe cannot be found", it used to work and i've tried re-installing it with every method but nothing changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The developers really need to just give the end user a proper "play" button for it. Not everyone can do all the mumbo jumbo I've read to install it and get it working, and then it doesn't work anyway, despite all methods.

So I was having the "Chapter 5 not showing up" issue so I deleted everything to install it again. But pressing "subscribe" doesn't download anything. It just tells me I'm subscribed.

Getting CTD with error: "Out of memory or address space. Texture quality setting may be too high."

My computer specs:
Screen Resolution: 3440x1440
RAM: 64GB
GPU: 7900XTX
Video Driver: Adrenalin 24.11.1
OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Launch settings: didn't change
Mods: N/A

Happens randomly.

Every graphics setting maxed. I experienced the bug first (and often) when the "big crystal" changes the colorscheme.

Seems also happen regularly when manually loading and saving.

Not sure what you mean other apps running in background. I have som sys.monitoring SW regarding my AIO, Steam, GOG, Epic, Discord, Steelseries GG, Bitdefender running. But they should have more than enough room in my RAM.
According to overlay when playing Blue Shift it uses ~16GB RAM and ~7GB VRAM. I have plenty enough to spare in both regards.

It's already happened to me twice that when I close the game the bms.exe is deleted. When using the steam tool to check files it detects that it is missing and when trying to download it it tells me "disk writing error"
