[2022.1] Emblems Expanded

This mod adds over 350 real U-boat emblems used by the Kriegsmarine, which can be equipped via conning tower upgrades!

More than half of the emblems included have now been individually drawn and painted (see the list below).

Other images were sourced from uboat.net and upscaled using AI upscaling. Please bear in mind that some of these did not scale properly and have some defects. We're gradually replacing these with manually created artwork.

• When you start a new career, your conning tower will automatically display a historically accurate emblem for that U-boat.
  
• Includes replacement emblems for ALL vanilla game's careers - and all of UBOAT EXPANDED (UBE) careers!
  
• The vanilla game descriptions for each career U-boat have also been re-written, with corrections and historical details added.
  
• You can still change your boat's emblem to any of the others included in the mod.

Many of these emblems are not featured on uboat.net. We've carefully re-created them by referencing photographs and illustrations from various sources.

Where possible, we reference historical photos to determine the colour, position and size of each emblem. In some cases, the historical positioning shown in photos isn't suitable due to differences in the type of conning tower, or because of the position and configuration of the upper railings on the game's conning towers. In these instances, we've imagined where the crew may have displayed their emblem if their boat had one of the conning towers used in the game.

Text descriptions for each one are included in the game's Conning Tower upgrade menu. Many now have interesting historical details added.

• All enhanced and new emblems listed above also feature additional rust and grime effects applied to the upper section of front and sides of the tower. We decided to do this because the default textures for the upper section of the conning tower look noticeably less rusted than the lower section.
  
• The additional rust has been blended with the weathering on the new & enhanced emblems to help give a more consistent overall appearance of a U-boat that has seen plenty of time on active duty.

IMPORTANT: Please clear your Cache and Data Sheets folders before running this new version for the first time!

• It may take a few seconds (or even a minute or so) for your chosen emblem to appear on the conning tower.
  
• This mod may occasionally cause the conning tower texture to disappear after selecting an emblem! If this happens, save your game, exit to the main menu then re-load your save. We have no idea what causes this but will try to resolve it. Perhaps the game devs didn't intend their scripts to be used in this manner.
  
• Repeatedly changing emblems often causes the emblem become increasingly blurred/pixelated with each change. If this happens, save your game, exit to the main menu then re-load your save. Again, we have no idea what causes this issue but will try to resolve it.

If the above fixes don't work, exit the game completely and delete your cache files (C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\LocalLow\Deep Water Studio\UBOAT\Cache). Then restart the game.

This mod is NOT compatible with any mod which adds or modifies U-boat skins using the simple 'vanilla texture replacement' method.

If you want another mod to become compatible, the mod author must use the new 'equipment' method to convert their U-boat skin/emblem into an equipment item. If they don't know how do that, ask them to contact Link.

This mod is partially save game compatible:

• If you install an emblem with a new game, it should work as intended.
  
• If you install an emblem in a previous save you may only be able to install emblems using console commands only:
  
  1. Open the command console (press the 'tilde' key - the one with a “~” symbol)
     
  2. Enter the following command:
     
     Install "Badge [badge name]"
     Examples:
     
     Install "Badge Crew 28"
     Install "Badge Flotilla 1"
     Install "Badge U-30"
  3. Press the Enter or Return key
     
  4. Close the command console (~)

Other ideas we're considering:

• Emblems on the game's NPC Type XIV Milk Cow U-boats.
  
• U-boat skins as an upgrade
  
• 3D emblems - many U-boats had their emblem painted on a metal plaque which was fixed to the conning tower, and some were even engraved or moulded.
  
• Researchable emblem/skin/interior upgrades?
  
• Benefits to U-boat via skin upgrade?
