"I finally realized why they call her Shadow: I was overseeing the security check in her room while she was out, as a standard procedure, and I forgot my glasses on her nightstand. Getting back to my own room, here they were, on my dining table, wrapped in the finest tissue imbued with her distinctive perfume. Nobody saw her get in or out. We never talked about it, of course."
